Minnesota Twins Sign Joey Gallo
Nashvilletwin replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Second best, behind Gordon? At the moment Gordon is our overall most reliable OF. Sorry to have to say that, but BB on the bench is not our best OF. -
Minnesota Twins Sign Joey Gallo
Nashvilletwin replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Makes sense for what purpose? Is Gallo going to lead us to the playoffs, let alone a playoff win? Are fans going to show up to see Gallo k twice a game? Or buy his jersey? Is this the move a club makes to position itself for a true run? Listen, who knows in the mediocre AL Central. But this is not a move by any stretch of anyone’s imagination that moves the dial for this club in ‘23 and most certainly not in ‘24. The only redeeming possibility is that he plays well enough that we move him by the deadline for a decent prospect. Vasquez was a good signing. Farmer made more sense than Urshela in our lineup. We shall see how Gallo for Kepler plus whatever Kepler brings in a trade looks soon I’m sure. But regardless, this is a FO nipping at the edges to try to fill the big gaping hole left by Correa. -

Btw, love the photo of Gallo at the top of the post - looks like he just K’d waving at strike three out of zone. We will see a lot of that in ‘23. -

Minnesota Twins Sign Joey Gallo

You’re kidding right? Seriously - so we sit Larnach, Kiriloff, Gordon, and Wallner to let Gallo and Kepler eat up at bats? And then throw in Garlick when needed vs. a lefty? Sorry, I won’t be watching that clown show (Kepler is as good as gone btw). Nephew Joey is off to a rough start and is going to have a lot of wood to chop. I’ve got the under on 1.5MM fans this season. Maybe they can make up the lost revenue selling those hideous M hats or fans buying new jerseys with Gallo’s name and number on the back. Lol. -

Hoping to see a lot of new faces this year: Lee, Lewis, Julien, Wallner, Martin, SWR, Winder, Varland, Henriquez, Sales, and maybe Balazovic. Hope to see a lot of some somewhat new faces too: Kiriloff, Larnach, Miranda, Alcala, and Ober. Yep, looking forward to see who emerges as the new young core out of that group of 16 to augment Buxton, Arraez, Gordon, Jeffers, Vasquez, Ryan, Duran, and Jax.

Couldn’t agree more. I was thinking about what is going to get me to watch another 150 games this upcoming season, and I was dreading the prospect of not only the names you mentioned, but also Kepler, Garlick, and, yes, even Polanco. I’ve seen all those guys and to be honest I’m not all that interested in seeing them a lot more. Don’t get me wrong - they are excellent ball players and worthy of tremendous respect. Max and Jorge are two of my favorites. It’s just that I don’t see much excitement in tuning in to see them when the team is a non-contender and they probably won’t be around when the new core arrives. I mean, watching Max hit 0.225 is just not interesting anymore. Now, give me Lee, Lewis, Martin and Julien and I’ll be tuning in every day - even if they have their struggles. By August, they should be on the field pretty regularly.

Rumor: Twins Still in on Rodon and Swanson

Offseason Status Update: Time to Pivot
Nashvilletwin replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Exactly. Either pony up or embrace who we really are. Since we won’t do the former, we’d better do the later. Unfortunately, this FO will do neither. I can live with a rebuild. I like a lot of our young talent. But what is hard to stomach is trading that talent and/or not developing it. This FO and manager are not right for the strategy we must embrace if we want to have a true chance to compete.- 38 replies

Rumor: Twins Still in on Rodon and Swanson
Nashvilletwin replied to Nashvilletwin's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Haha, maybe he throws us a consolation bone? -
1. Sign Swanson. 2. Move Kiriloff to the OF; Celestino goes to St. Paul. 3. Trade Kepler for a solid relief pitcher, add Wallner, trade/drop Pagan 4a. Add an additional solid FA relief pitcher, drop Megill or Moran; or 4b. Insert Rodon in the Rotation; Ober or Maeda goes to the pen; or 4c. Sign a better RH OF bat (not sure who); Garlick goes to St. Paul; or 5. Do none of the above, sell big time at the deadline, draw 1.5MM at best, and let the young guys (Lee, Lewis, Julien, Martin, Wallner, Winder, Varland, SWR, Sands, and Henriquez) play in August and September. Oh, and look for a new FO and Manager.

Rumor: Twins Still in on Rodon and Swanson
Nashvilletwin replied to Nashvilletwin's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Yeah, you are totally correct even if the rumor that they are still in hard on both is true. Having said that, desperate people do desperate things and our FO is looking pretty darn desperate right now. Besides, what a great way for Nephew Joe to make a big splash out of the gate. Maybe his uncles give him a Christmas gift. -
Rumor: Twins Still in on Rodon and Swanson
Nashvilletwin replied to Nashvilletwin's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Yep. Only 55 years and a slight loss of hearing in my left ear from attending games 6 and 7 in ‘87. -
Just read on a Cubs- related site that their intel is that the Twins are still looking very hard at both Rodon and Swanson. There’s not that much surprise to that rumour I guess. But what if the ultimate pivot by Falvey from Correa is to sign both of them? It sounds outlandish, and far deeper pocket teams would need to be beat out in the bidding. But, even with the likely “overpay” (whatever that means), the total annual cost vs. Correa stand alone would probably only be about $20MM more ($50MM vs $30MM or so) and the lengths of the contracts would be shorter. The Twins could afford it and a few moves - trading Kepler for example - could ease the burden. These two signings would certainly fire up the base and position the team as the favorite in the Central. Who knows, with a true #1, we might even win a playoff game. Besides, signing just one doesn’t really move the dial neigh for this club on so many fronts. But both……? Falvey is a bit of a rabbit out of the hat puller. I’m not putting anything past him at this point. Unlikely - for sure. Impossible - no. View full rumor

Hear me out - as outlandish as this sounds. What if Falvey has one huge kick save left in his arsenal? That kick save would be to sign Rodon and Swanson. It’s no as outlandish as it sounds. Dollars spent for Rodon plus Swanson > Correa; but maybe only by $15MM annually and probably for fewer years. One of the two is probably not enough to get the fan base excited or get us over the hump. But both…… Its not crazy and I’m not putting it past Falvey that this strategy isn’t on his mind right now.

Doc, there is a lot of truth in what you write. And punting via a complete rebuild trading anyone not going to be here in two - three years is certainly on the table - and that includes Mahle, Maeda, Gray, Polanco, Kepler and Arraez. Perhaps there is one giant kick save left in the bag for Falvey: sign both Swanson and Rodon. It’s not likely, but not impossible. And it may be the only strategy that averts or postpones what seems to be inevitable at this point.

Rumor: Gray and Maeda Drawing Trade Interest
Nashvilletwin replied to mnfireman's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Of course they are. Boy, it didn’t take long for the wolves to start circling. The general consensus around the league must be that the Twins are now up the creek without a paddle. The “we can compete with Correa” illusion has been shattered and there is not much left behind it. The FO wrapped up the team’s entire persona in getting Correa signed, and now that he’s going somewhere else, it’s clear that the emperor is basically naked - a middling staff, no above average position player except Buxton (the few games he actually plays) and possibly Arraez, a depleted prospect list, and a disheartened fickle fan base. Falvey and Levine will be getting the calls from now until the trade deadline for any player who will not be part of the two-three year rebuild. There is a high likelihood that unless this team catches fire out of the gate, Mahle, Maeda, Gray, Kepler, Polanco and Arraez are gone by August 1. -
Falvey: Hey, nice job Zaidi, pinching Correa from us at the last minute like that. Hey, who am I kidding - we both know you were going to sign him once Judge was off the table. Anyway, what are you going to do now with that old other shortstop Crawford? Want to trade him? Zaidi: Why would you want him when you have Farmer (which btw is a legitimate question)? Falvey: Well, I’m kinda backed into a corner with the fan base and, even though we think Farmer’s ok, he’s not going to put butts in the seats or lead us to the playoffs. Zaidi: And Crawford will? Falvey: Well, probably not, but I have to look like I’m doing something. Who do you want for him? Zaidi: You know I’ve always liked you Derek and I’d never take advantage of you in your time of need. How about you send us that often injured guy - what’s his name, Lewis? Yeah and throw in that Lee guy too. Falvey: But those are my only two decent prospects I have left! Zaidi: Hey, don’t get worked up - I was just joshing you. I’ll take Gray and Lee. Take it or leave it. You have one minute to decide - I’m just leaving to take my wife out to dinner to celebrate stealing Correa from you. Lol

Minnesota is a classic front running market - winning brings fans. 2022 was saved by the club playing meaningful baseball into September. A slow start and realistically out of it by mid-late June, coupled with this lineup, inflation pressures, and an iffy downtown, 18,000/game or under 1.5MM for the season sounds about right.
-
Could be. But Rocco is at the helm. It’s his responsibility overall. Now, possibly one could excuse Rocco a bit on this front if he were a strong in-game manager. But he’s not. You want to win as small market team? Better start with a manager/coaching staff that can get the most out of their players and be several games net positive over a season on in-game tactics/strategy. Rocco and his staff are neither.
