DaShawn Keirsey: Twins Most Underrated Prospect

Pablo Lopez is Better than His ERA
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think they extended him because they feel pretty confident that they can pencil him in the rotation for the next 3 plus years and he would be better than the prospects they have coming up in that timeframe, and if they are wrong about the prospects and they are better than expected they should be able to flip a pretty decent contract. And to save some face that they traded Arreaz. -
Pablo Lopez is Better than His ERA
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You wrote - "Performance and results are what I care about. And Lopez after the first month has been no better than a #4 or 5 starter. " I added data to say you were incorrect he isn't a 4/5 starter and the numbers say he is in the range I said. Now you changed to who won and who lost. If you are only going to compare Lopez to Arraez, it seems the Twins lost. But the whole picture isn't as black and white as who won and who lost. Take Lopez off the Twins and who replaces those 110 innings? It would have to mostly be somebody that hasn't pitched this year for the Twins and more innings for relief pitchers? Then you have to look at who's at bats Arraez would have taken from and do a compare, the Twins still come out on the losing end. But there still is that asset in the minors that could help even that out. I am much more upset how the Berrios trade has worked out than this one. Berrios is back to being one of the best in the American league and as of now the two super prospects have been flops. -
How Invested Are You in the 2023 Twins season?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I stream so no TV for me, always on the radio if I am in the car. Was picking up my son from practice last night and was happy the game was supposed to be on TBS (not sure if it was or not) because I didn't get home until the bottom of the second ended, and then had no interest. I check gamecast quite a bit, since I am on a few text threads where people are talking about the Twins and enjoy that so I have to see what is going on. -
DaShawn Keirsey: Twins Most Underrated Prospect
TwinsDr2021 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Starting him in AA was fine, when he started taking off I move him ahead of the non-prospects in AAA Stevenson and Contreras. If the FO has no real plans for bringing Wallner up as an outfielder, then I give Keirsey shot there. I mean it doesn't seem all that difficult. But IMO making excuses why a 26 year old can't unseat non prospects in AAA kind of proves my point he isn't much of a prospect. On top of he is the center fielder right above the Twins 20 year old Number 3 prospect. But as I said before, I wish him the best of luck and have said I would love to see him here now. -

Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In 2018 - In the majors was Berrios, Gibson, had just traded for Odo, Romero, Holdenberger, Rogers, Pressly, Stewart, Moya, Busentiz, May, Duffey, Mejia, Littell. Top prospects were Romero, Gonsalves, Graterol, Enlow, Thorpe, Littell, So I am not positive that you can say there are certainly more quality pitchers, We might think there is because most of those failed, but who is say we won't be saying the same things in the next 5 years. Berrios = Ryen Gibson = Ober Romero = Varland Pressly = Duran Rogers = Jax and then everybody else- 68 replies

Pablo Lopez is Better than His ERA
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are 15 teams in the American league. He is 7th in the American league in innings, 3rd in the American league in K's, 16th in the American league in WHIP, 27th in the American league in ERA. To me that puts him in the range of top 15 to top 25 pitchers in the whole league. and that isn't a #4 or #5 starter, he is a 2 or 3 on decent staff and a 3 good staff. I am not saying this to defend the trade (which I liked and still do) but you and others are making it sound like he is Happ, Shoemaker, Bundy or Archer and he isn't, he is the type of pitcher we have been wanting for a while and now that he is here people are pissed he isn't Valdez or Cole. -
DaShawn Keirsey: Twins Most Underrated Prospect
TwinsDr2021 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Didn't Cruz spend time in the majors at ages 24, 25, 26, and 27 before his career took off and was later suspended for Steroids? and then really took off. You are correct age isn't everything but it combined with production and the level they are at is probably the biggest factor in determining a players career. People might not like it and came back with with multiple names that say otherwise, but they are rare and the outliers. I find it almost laughable in a sport driven by data and analytics that people want to ignore this one. To me that this FO still has him in AA at his age and they way he has been playing speaks loudly to where they think he falls in the pecking order. Would I be for the Twins getting rid of Kepler bringing this kid up to be the 4th/5th outfielder pinch runner and giving him a shot at being something more, and cheer loudly for him, yes absolutely I would, do it today. Do I think he will turn into anymore more than Mark Contreras, sadly I don't. -
Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Can you tell us what age the average top or middle tier starter debuted? Side note I think Varland will be a fine major league pitcher going forward, but I don't count guys pitching in the minors as part of a current pipeline,- 68 replies

Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Got to be honest with this type of definition the last FO was a pitching pipeline dream. Berrios, Gibson, Mejia, Duffey, Pressly, Rogers, Hidenberger, Perkins, May, Duensing, Guerrier, Swarzak, Diamond, Liriano, Hendriks, Blackburn, They had list of studs prospects like Stewart, Jay, Thrope, Chargois, Meyer, Burdi, Romero and Gonzalez. I mean there was a not stop list of studs that didn't turn out or last very long and a few that did well. What is different than this current FO? I mean currently it is two starters (Ryan and Ober) and few bullpen arms (Duran, Jax). I don't count minor league players as part of of a pipleline,- 68 replies

DaShawn Keirsey: Twins Most Underrated Prospect
TwinsDr2021 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Seriously talking about a 26 year old repeating AA as prospect? Really? he seems like a great guy and has suffered some bad injuries and I wish him nothing but the best and hopefully some day gets a taste of MLB money. Is some sort of bizarro prospect baseball story? (he is the same age or older than 17 guys on the 40 man) I do like the recap of his baseball career and learning about him and like I said wish him nothing but good health and good luck. -
Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Don't forget Paddock, since the off season prior to Covid, the Twins have traded for Maeda, Gray, Paddock, Mahle and Lopez. That is five starting pitchers (I don't include Ryan in this group because it was sell off of Cruz, and a great trade, and probably closer to the a pipeline development) Since the 2020 season there has been 464 games. Ober has 43 starts, Varland has 15. That is basically it from the pipeline, now if you want to include Ryan that totals 105 games. Not my idea of a pipeline and with Gray and Maeda mostly likely gone next year, the Twins are going to be struggling with depth again, because no rookie/prospect has stepped up this year. Lopez, Ryan, Ober, and two maybes in Varland and Paddock, and ?????- 68 replies

But wouldn't that be the same thinking the opponents would have against Ryan, Gray and Ober for example? I mean the Twins have to hit better and have a better offensive plan, but with Stewart, Jax and Duran closing out the game and maybe a couple of others they can add at the deadline, I am not sure how the thinking is they will be getting better the next few years?

Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You could make a list like this every year going back X amount of years. I assume the question was which pitcher(s) in the minors are blowing people away and we fans just can't wait for them to get here and are willing to push them here now. and the pitchers in your list aren't the answer to that question. Nothing against Festa or Raya, but my hope for them this year was to be so good that they would push if not pass this list of pitchers SWR/Headrick/Winder/Sands/Balazovic/ Henriquez/Enlow. I don't think that has happened so the list I made is basically the next wave. Lets be honest the pitching prospects list is pretty bare. (Not that a few couldn't step it up and be good Lewis for example)- 68 replies

Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?

I might disagree with the develop good hitters, Lewis, Larnach, Julien, Wallner, Celestino and Jeffers are the only guys on the 40 man they have drafted or acquired as minor league players And as of now, right now, Lewis looks good but as 121 MLB at bats, Julien 111 at bats, Larnach, Wallner an Celestino are in the minors, and it looks like Jeffers could be something. That's it, not sure I would say the have a pretty good ability to draft and develop hitters.- 68 replies

I am not here to defend Pagan, if it was up to me he would have been gone last year. But in this case he is a bullpen guy that came in and gave up a homer, it happens, even to the best relief pitchers (Him and Duran have both given up 3, Duran in 2 less innings) Pagan didn't lose this game, the Twins were already down 2 - 1 when he came in and they didn't score again. This game was lost the moment Rocco penciled in Kepler in the 3 hole!

Why do the Twins Fans have to wait until 26 or 27? Are the Reds, Baltimore, Dbacks or Marlins really that much better than the Twins are today or that much closer to winning a championship this year or next? I would say the answer is no, we are pissed at where this FO and Manager have put us the last few years, I mean 2026 is the time they should be trading away Ober, Ryan and Lopez if they still have value before becoming a free agent(same time frame as Berrios) and restocking the farm. That is how continued success and a pipeline work, IMO the offense isn't that far away and the pitching staff is here. Get Buxton healthy (meaning put him on the DL for a few weeks or sent him to Fort Myers and have the kids throwing live pitching to him so he can figure out how to hit again) and figure out if any of the younger guys can do more than strike out or hit a homer. I am not talking about Wallner and Larnach. I am talking about Lee, Soularie, Severio, Maybe Rosario, ERod, and Schobel. They need to inject some life into the offensive, Lewis/Julien seem to have that, maybe having another young guy taking a vets job will do that as well.

Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't believe the natural assumption was that Cleveland was just good a drafting pitchers. To me it seemed like they were amazing at letting other teams draft pitchers and were able to pick out (trade for) the ones they thought they could make good pitchers and good at drafting. They have been similar to the Twins in drafting college pitchers and having them debut at an older age which in the long runs saves a ton of money and frees it up for all spots, since you never have to pay real money for starters that way. Plus they have hit on some young studs. (Bieber, McKenzie) and that currently seems to be the big difference.- 68 replies

Wasn't arguing against the premise, just pointing out they basically just faced the best of the best and it was close game, and in a close games anything can happen (kind of the play in the 7th). Not disagreeing that the bats have to be better and probably the game plan as well. But I will take Ryan, Gray, Ober/Lopez and in a 3 or 5 game series and see what happens.

Has Derek Falvey Established His Pitching Pipeline?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First I would say Ryan isn't and can't be Shane Bieber. Ryan is almost exactly 1 year younger than Bieber. Bieber has pitched 803 innings in his career and Ryan 267. His development is 3 years behind, not sure how he catches that. As for a pipeline, I am going to say no they haven't developed a pipeline, to me a pipeline is a stream of starters coming out of the minors (traded for or drafted) and replacing the starters that have gotten hurt or been traded because they are getting near free agency. With that said they have developed Ober, Varland (in the minors) and should get credit for bringing in Ryan. Gray and Lopez were good gets but it took the prospects to bring them in, probably hurting their pipeline in the process. For the pen they seem to be able to take minor league starters and turn them into viable bullpen pieces. (Duran, Jax, Winder) But I am not sure that is much different than what every team does. They have a decent job finding diamonds in the rough as well. IMO a pipeline would be something like (brought up and started) Ober 21, Ryan 22, Varland 23, Festa 24 , SWR 24, Raya 25, Trading Gray in 23, trading Ober 24, trading Ryan 25 and replenishing the farm along the way and taking he failed starters and putting them in the pen. .- 68 replies

IMO Gray and Maeda aren't going to return the type of players you are hoping to get in a trade. Maybe a real young prospect that turns into something years down the line (like Duran). I can't imagine the Reds would trade back Petty for a half season of Gray. But with that said I am open to trading Gallo, Kepler, Gray and Maeda while still shopping for a relief pitcher or two that can be trusted. Gray would have to be return they just can't say no to, and the other three I say yes to the trade offer without caring at all who the other team is offering.
-
The way Miranda and Larnach played prior to being demoted is one of the reasons this offense was so bad. Not sure swapping out Gallo and Kepler for those two is a positive. Wallner hasn't been given much of a chance but there seems to be something this FO doesn't like about his game, because if you aren't going to give him a chance at age 25 with as bad as Kepler has played when are you ever going to give him a chance?
