The Twins Have a Hitting Development Problem
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kepler has gotten worse, Polanco has been an All Star, Sano has been an all star, Polanco has been an all star, Garver won a SS, Not really blaming them for what happened with them, but I know none have really gotten better and they haven't been able to replace them. I will 100% give them credit for Arraez, as long as we also credit them for Gordon, Javier, Blankenorn, Diaz and all the other prospects that were generally ranked around where he was that failed or they missed had talent and went away. It just tough to give them credit for the guys they inherited that did well but a pass on guys they inherited that didn't do well, right?- 28 replies

Marco Raya Is Refining His Repertoire in Cedar Rapids
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think the real difference between the two is Berrios was given a real chance to pitch at age 20 Berrios was A+ and AA pitching 140 innings, Raya is in A+ and currently has 31 innings after only pitching 65 last year. Berrios pitched 103 as 19 year old. IMO I think this puts Raya behind Berrios at least in his development, which isn't the end of the world. -
The Twins Have a Hitting Development Problem
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wait what, no way. j/k Jeffers would be considered a success I think, he debuted at age 23 and basically has been up since. The 40 man is so barren of guys they have drafted or acquired as minor league players. Jeffers, Julien, Lewis, Celestino, Larnach and Wallner, That is it! 7 years and that is it, When this FO arrived it was given and outfield of Rosario, Buxton, Kepler, and infield of Polanco, Sano, and Arreaz and Garver at catcher and they turned those into a hot pile of .......- 28 replies

Ok, so we aren't talking about Contreras, Lamarre and Stevenson, but I wasn't the one (and neither were you) that said Kepler and Larnach or Wallner could have gotten Lopez.

There were so many moves between Berrios and Arreaz that it doesn't make sense to even talk about that. Gray, Paddock, Mahle, and on and on.

I don't disagree with really anything you said, but none of that has really has much to do with what the Marlins wanted, unless you are saying it was the Twins that pushed to trade LA and not that Miami was requiring him. IMO it was the Marlins that wanted him and the Twins saying the only way we do it is give us Salas. And if the Twins FO was pushing AL over unproven mid 20's prospect, well more reason to fire them. Because if I ran the Marlins and the Twins said to me you can have any 3 of the following 4 Larnach, Kepler, Wallner or Julien for Lopez, I would laugh at the Twins and say I am not taking your garbage for a young solid starting pitcher. Why would I (being the Marlin FO) want to clog my 40 man with these guys, I mean I would have some interest in Julien, but he would have to be added to ERod or Lee, something not on the 40 right now and to be honest the Marlins are the ones that added a top 100 prospect to get Arreaz.

If Julien and Wallner were doing what the have been doing and currently doing and were age 21 and22 or even 22 and 23 that and another minor league player would probably have gotten the deal done. The odds are not in Wallner's favor of being a future all star, they are a bit better for Julien, compare that to Arraez and it is a no brainer why Wallner, Larnach and Julie still wear Twins uniforms and Arraez does not.

No chance that Kepler and one of those others would have gotten Lopez. Age current accomplishments prior to this year Wallner 25 years old and 200 days - 133 major league at bats 44 strike outs. Larnach 26 years old 124 days - 420 major league at bats sub .700 OPS and injured multiple times. Julien 24 years old 61 days - AA player Arraez 26 years old 82 days (All Star, 13th in MVP voting, Batting Champ, Silver Slugger) and 4 years of proven major league at bats. There is a reason they wanted Arraez and not those other 3, because he good and proven and the others are older and haven proven anything. Pablo Lopez is 27 years old 115 days that is 90 older than Ryan and younger than Ober, that is 1 year and 9 month older than Varland. MN Twins fans can go on believing prospects age doesn't matter and Covid year this and that, But it does and teams aren't going to trade a young guy for unproven guys basically there same age. Did the Twins trade Berrios for mid 20's unproven players? Nope, they traded for 22 year old Martin and a 20 year old SWR.

Honest question, do you think the FO thought/thinks Larnach, Miranda, AK high K, low BA, high HR hitters? or have they tried to turn them into something they are not? To me all of these players can't be this bad, IMO they have looking at the number incorrectly thinking exit velocity is the key to hitting and runs, and when reality is actually being a good hitter leads to exit velocity? IDK
-
Not sure it is nitpicking, in his last 125 at bats he has 6 doubles, 1 homer, 15 walks, 39 K's hitting .240 with a OBP of .321 His first 22 at bats were amazing, .409/.536/.773, 9/22, 2 doubles, 2 homers, 6 walks, 5 strikeouts Then he went 1/7 and it was downhill from there, his power dropped, his walks dropped his K's went up. Like I said I want him to be good, really good and I hope he turns it around. But he hasn't been good in a month and a half.
-
Going to have to disagree with this take, just about everything AK did was in May, June was terrible. May 22/70 - 3 homers, 14 walks - , .314/.448/.486 June 17/77 - 1 homer 6, walks - .221/.286/.325 I like AK and hope he can turn it around, but he was a contributor to this terrible June baseball the Twins played, not the exception. Miranda got send down for very similar numbers in April 26/104 - 3 homers, 7 walks, .250/.304/.365 Larnach was worse when he got sent down, but not a whole lot worse.
-
So you took that he won't win an MVP because he doesn't hit homers as he isn't that good? I was responding to somebody else saying if he wins MVP, not if he ends up in the top 5 which you seem to be saying. On ESPN and baseball reference (maybe the same, not sure) he is behind Marte in WAR (3.6,3.5), In case you didn't know Marte also plays second, not saying Marte is better but there could be an argument made. In no way was I saying he isn't good, because obviously he is, I was just pointing out facts, only Ichiro won an MVP with less than 10 homers and that was in 2001 before that was Rose in 1973. I could also point out how few second basemen win the award. If you re-read my response to somebody I didn't even comment on if the trade was good or bad, so Would I have made the trade, yup, Would I have made the trade knowing how the two players would play in a 1/2 season I still would. The Twins got a 27 year old pitcher with a better than average track record and this FO hasn't proved they can develop that themselves. Do I think the Marlins are laughing, I don't, I think they are happy that they went out and got a offensive player that is really good for a position that seem pretty good at developing, how this trades ends up is still yet to be determined but as of now I think the Marlins are really, really happy, and the Twins are satisfied they were able to slot in a starter that averages 6 innings a start and as of yet hasn't gotten hurt. Does it hurt not having Arraez, yes, where we hoping for more from Lopez, yes, but having Arraez and say SWR in the rotation make this a better team, I don't know that it does. Want to know who might be laughing right now? Toronto and Houston, they got Berrios and Pressly and the Twins have gotten, wait for it basically nothing to this point.

With the way the 40 man roster is constructed, it is hard to add more mid to late 20 year olds to it. The 40 man is loaded with unproven older guys. (Larnach, Miranda, AK, Wallner, Julien, Winder, Sands, Headrick, Canterino, Alcala, Lewis) That is 25% of the 40 man, sure Lewis looks like a keeper, maybe Julien, the rest as of now are just players, Looking at the 40 man on the non-pitching side, there are two obvious to get rid of (Kepler and Gallo) but then who? Nobody they are going to cut so it would have to be a trade, and who of the above mentioned players are going to return anything? Plus at some point Gordon is coming back and another decision will need to be made. Plus who at the end of the year goes away? Taylor and Solano and more unproven players will need to be added. On the they are screwed because none of the following at taken a job AK, Larnach, Celestion, Wallner, Miranda.

It scares me to say that because I don't want this front office here for another rebuild/reload, I also don't want them to go for it either because I don't want them trading away assets. What I am saying is I want whatever needs to happen for them to be gone after this year or before.
-
You can't say what he said and then do nothing (I mean you can) It is going to be interesting to see how the attendance is when they get back from Baltimore.
-
And here is your second place MN Twins, Am I surprised how bat the hitting is, yes, am I surprised that it isn't good, nope. At the beginning of the year it was pointed out how many holes this team had. People tried to explain that Vazquez was a good hitter, and he is not, sure he has had some decent years but he just isn't. We knew what to expect from Gallo, and have gotten it. The opening day line had Gordon at 2B, not a good hitter. Taylor in CF, not a good hitter, Kepler in RF not a good hitter, Larnach in LF unproven player with a limited career of not being very good, Miranda at 3B second year player who had a decent first year, Correa and Buxton. The bench was decent if they weren't needed on a daily basis. Which of course they have been because the starters have been terrible. That is why I don't understand people begging for Miranda and Larnach back, they are part of the problem not part of the answer this year. I get Wallner he was never really given a chance.
-
This team has been playing like crap for 2 plus year, this didn't start this offseason trading Arreaz. I would even say this is has been how they been playing since 2019, and the reason I have been calling for firing Rocco since.
-
I guess you missed where I said cut Kepler and send Gallo to the bench. I am not mad at Buxton, he is just terrible, and if the Twins want to DL they can, simply by saying he needs to be back in CF and if he can't he needs to go on the DL. IMO bringing Larnach and Miranda don't do what I want to accomplish and that is shake things up, get players worried about their job and by passing those two for guys in AA does that IMO.

How the Pressly and Berrios trades don't make the list is beyond my comprehension. Both still could end up well, but as of now, they basically got 4 minor league players. Don't care how good Martin, Celestino, SWR and Alcala could be (I mean I do and hope they are) but as of now they haven't been good.

I will go out on a limb and say Arraez doesn't ever win a MVP, he is basically hitting .400 and kind of is an after thought in the MVP race (he just doesn't have the power), I mean is he even the best 2B in the National league right now? #1 will be bad no matter what the other players do and #5 is way too early to decide on.

I could care less if he is as healthy as he is going to get, having him up is hurting the team and if the manager and FO can't see that well they are worse than I think they are (and that is pretty bad) June - 5/42 - .119/.178/.357 that is f'n terrible AK has played like crap all of June, with Correa that is the middle of the lineup hitting just slightly better than if us fans were in the lineup. Larnach and Miranda have done nothing worthy of being called up. Wallner has and with Buxton on the DL he can DH. Getting somebody up that can play center field means we can start being done with Taylor and his .215/.235/.477 They aren't cutting Gallo, but they shouldn't be starting him very often either, he can pinch hit and play some defense. But if they want to cut him, I am for that as well - .186/.239/.395 I will say this if nothing is done prior to tomorrow I may have to actually start cheering on the losses.

DaShawn Keirsey: Twins Most Underrated Prospect
TwinsDr2021 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
He is playing well, and if you see my other post he should be up for tomorrows game (in the game recap) but he is much older than the other guys in some cases 5,6,7 years older. It also seems like a hitters league (no idea) but some of those guys are putting up some crazy stats and are not in the top 100 prospects. Good Day. -
Rocco in the press conference sounded like what quite a few on here have been saying for a two plus years. The question on the two strike approach after the Rays series. That was 19 games ago and they have gone 9 - 10 and nothing changed. The question I have is who isn't going to Baltimore, you can't have a presser like that and not a make some sort of change. Buxton to the IR, Kepler gone, AK to the minors (June - 16/74 - .216/.284/.324) Here is what I would do I would send AK down and call up Williams, I would cut Kepler and bring up Wallner, IR Buxton and do something splashy like call up Keirsey, or Soularie. (I would personally would call up Rosario, but I know that is going to happen and only me wants that)

On a positive note the bullpen pitched 9 1/3 innings out of 24 and only gave up 2 runs. Sadly in those 3 games the offensive only scored 3 runs.
