It is always about age (or at least the vast majority of the time) the best players in the game don't need to spend and years in the minors or AAA. Mauer had 21 PA in AAA before debuting at age 21. Soto still doesn't have a AAA plate appearance. Bobby Witt with his missed COVID season has a total of 161 games in the minors, Volpe has 21 games in AAA, Luis Arraez has 18 games in AAA. Julio Rodrguez never played AAA and missed the Covid year and debuted at age 21. I could go on and on with examples of the major league stars, difference makers. Talent is Talent is Talent and it is usually obvious (to the MLB people at least), yes there are guys that weirdly figure it out in their mid 20's or later but they are the exception to the rule, and yes there are decent major league players that fill out rosters that take more time developing and they play a huge role for teams and are vital for a team. But when we are talking MN Twins prospects, my goal isn't roster fillers guys, I am looking for the next Mauer, Buxton, Correa, Soto, Tatis, Henderson, Witt type of player, why because 90% of those guys will fail to be that and end up being the roster filler role anyway. (AK prime example) IMO when they left Miranda, Julien and Wallner down in the minor leagues longer than they should have they were destined to the players they are now and not the plug this stud in the lineup for the next 5/6 years and worry about another position.

"Since his wrist injury, he's held a roughly average .153 ISO and really shined in 2023, as he was on pace for roughly 20 home runs" Not really sure you can say somebody is on pace for any number, when he had 263 PA against RHP, and only 56 against LHP. People said the same about Wallner, but guess what when you aren't allowed to play against the same side pitcher, you pace is much lower than projecting your numbers to 162 games, because in no world can you play 162 games against the opposite side pitcher.

AK was 23 when called up and a top prospect, that was not too early. Lewis was called up at 23 and has a career OPS+ of 126, too early? Julien was called up at age 24, if that is too early for a guy with a minor league career OPS of over .900, then what the heck are the Twins doing? People hate it when I say this but really good baseball players (difference makers) don't need to sit in the minors forever or until they are "Fully developed" whatever that means.

3 Pitching Prospects Who Can Impact the 2025 Twins
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
None of the 4 you mentioned can be considered a success, yet. SWR is on his way, but if he slides back, 1 year doesn't make a pipeline success. Festa(4.90) and Matthews (6.69) are pitchers that yes have come from the pipleline but in no way can be considered a success yet, either. and the 4th is a minor league pitcher. At this point I would consider Varland more of a success than anybody other than SWR, and that would be an extreme stretch. With that said, I hope all of them plus Morris, Prielipp and others become pipeline successes. But IMO as of right now, all of them start next season in the minors (not SWR) unless the Twins trade Paddack or another starter goes down.- 31 replies

The Twins Have a First Base Problem
TwinsDr2021 replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So a guy from 60 years ago and a guy from Japan (I said not guys from Cuba or Japan) but there are better more recent examples like Merrifield but they are very rare, so to expect any of the Twins guys do it is a fools errand and that is the reason most teams actually trying to win don't count on guys like that for anything but injury replacement or bench players.- 85 replies

Just looking over Clevelands team for the last decade or so they do a pretty good job of developing decent starter pitching prospects into quality/decent starters in their mid 20's but in reality few turn out to be studs for many years. (Bieber is kind of an exception but only twice has pitched more than 128 innings in the majors) Which based on history it isn't much of a surprise.

The Twins Have a First Base Problem
TwinsDr2021 replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He turns 27 May 22 and only has 91 plate appearances in AAA, so it is very unlikely he is on the Twins in the first couple of months of the season. I will ask the same question how may guys that debut at this age (Late 26 or age 27) turn into impact full players? And like DX said above there is empirical evidence that says they won't, yes even after all the wishing and hoping from Twins fans that our prospects are the exception to the rule, not the rule.- 85 replies

The Twins Have a First Base Problem
TwinsDr2021 replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Don't you think every team can say that about every position? (tremendous potential) Miranda has a better OPS against Right and Left handed pitchers, so it seems Kiriloff is unnecessary. Severino is already 25 hasn't been to the majors and is on the 40 man, seems like a guy you don't need to protect on the 40 man anymore. McCusker will be 27 on May 22, any time people suggest a solution to a problem with a guy at that age in the minors (that isn't from Japan or Cuba) it isn't a serious solution for a team actually trying to win, unless of course it is for the 25/26 man off the bench, a late developing catcher or a relief pitcher. I do like the idea of Lewis at first.- 85 replies

I believe what you are saying, but I don't see results match the pretty significant organizational philosophical change statement? It did on the Twins they cut down their strikeouts by over 20% (1654 - 2023, 1306 - 204) which is a difference of 348, but between Gallo and Taylor that is 272, removing then brings it down below 10% reduction. The minors? 2024, 2023 - difference AAA 1372, 1459 -6% AA 1276, 1320 - 3% A+ 111, 1275 - 13% A 1173, 1253 - 6% And one argue the biggest difference in A+ and AA was due to the fact ERod left high A and went went to AA and was hurt for a large portion of the year.

Twins' Biggest Roster Needs for 2025
TwinsDr2021 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kind of weird to say he is an everyday player since he only got 22 at bats against left handers last year and the Twins have given him less than 200 plate appearances. I do hear what you are saying, maybe some crappy team would take him and Winder or somebody and give the Twins something in return. The Twins going into next year with him and Wallner on the the team and unwilling to play either against lefties is an issue IMO. -
Twins' Biggest Roster Needs for 2025
TwinsDr2021 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Oh I agree Larnach might not have much trade value, but if the requirement of a trade is an organization top 5 that is a high goal to achieve. There has to be team that is looking for a left handed platoon outfielder. -

TwinsDr2021 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And Buxton was 21 when he was called up and by age 23 was a MVP candidate. And not 24 like Miranda, Larnach, Julien, Wallner, or 25 like Martin, or older like Keirsey and Hellman. Guys don't do what your asking in AAA unless they are on the older side because if they are on the younger side teams get them up because teams generally don't waster young talent in the minors unless they are blocked by a superstar. -
Twins' Biggest Roster Needs for 2025
TwinsDr2021 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Of course you wouldn't, but you know who hasn't done what your asking for? Jackson Chourio, Jackson Merrill, Corbin Carroll, Julio Rodriguez, Gunnar Henderson, Bobby Witt, Joe Mauer and just about every other star in MLB. The love on this site for having players sit in the minors until their are in their mid twenties is baffling to me. I absolutely expect that in 8 plus years this FO drafts, signs, trades for a stud players that doesn't need all this extra seasoning in the minors and can just flat out play. Can the Twins fans have a nice things? Look at what Detroit did with Willi Castro, up at age 22, 4th in ROY at age 23, and age 25 decided he wasn't a full time player and moved on. The Twins signed him to be a bench player and thrived, but when forced to be a full time player he went back to being the guy Detroit knew wasn't a full time player. The Twins are still trying to figure out what they have with multiple players who are the same age as Castro was or even older. Because IMO they left every player in the minors too long (Miranda, Wallner, Julien). Get them up, get them in the game, and figure what you have, if you don't believe they are full time players move on because while a team needs platoon/bench type players, you can't have half of your 13 guys be those type of players. -
Twins' Biggest Roster Needs for 2025

That is someplace between a rebuilding team or a team built on hope that a whole bunch of players play the whole season like they do when they get hot for short periods. -
Twins' Biggest Roster Needs for 2025
TwinsDr2021 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Because there is no need for both of them if you are going to platoon them. I am OK, with Wallner being both an outfielder and DH. But both Jenkins and Erod are left handed and giving an actual young player a shot is putting two left handers in the outfield. One of the Twins biggest problems (besides health) is they two hand fulls of guys older than 25 that nobody really knows what kind of player they are (Miranda, Julien, Lewis, Larnach, Wallner, Martin, Castro, Severino, AK) and it causes active roster problems. Most of those guys are in their prime years and nobody knows if any are full time players. (sure we believe Lewis and Wallner probably are but are they?) -
Twins' Biggest Roster Needs for 2025
TwinsDr2021 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO they need to clean up the 40, Larnach or Wallner needs to go (I would choose Larnach). They need to decide on Martin or Castro (I would choose Martin to go) the other can go. Trade Julien. Lewis, Correa, Lee, and Miranda full time infield. ERod (Or Jenkins) , Buxton and a RH bat in the outfield, give Wallner the DH job, Castro and Jeffers at catcher, I am sick of guys needs more time in the minors lets give a young guy the job and let him play out the season. Three bench guys Castro, and two of everybody's favorite old minor league players ("Prospects") Starters Lopez, Ober, Ryan, SWR and Paddock (unless you can trade him with one of the others) Festa, Matthews and Morris next men up. -

It really isn't that hard to figure out, for one they didn't play the white sox, if you get rid of them they were a 70 - 79 team. Second they had two reliable starting pitchers and even the best pitchers can't be perfect every time. Third they had one reliable relief pitchers and maybe two others that you kind of felt comfortable with. Finally, they have a bunch of mid 20 something players that haven't established if they are every day major league players. How much of this chances next year is the real question.
