Matt Wallner Is Obliterating Baseballs
TwinsDr2021 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
and yet he will be the full time starting out fielder next year? I am not disagreeing with everything else you have said about him. His splits as a a major league major player (definitely small sample size) have been horrendous, and based on what the Twins have done with him it doesn't look like they are going to give him much of a chance to improve on that. IMO there is little to no chance they go into next year with Wallner and Larnach as full time starters (which people have stated) and a small chance either one of them are penciled in as full time starter. Also IMO unless some super star prospect powers their way into a full time role, we will see continue to see platoon types in quite a few positions. -
Matt Wallner Is Obliterating Baseballs
TwinsDr2021 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Wallner is going to hit .261 and get on base at or above .375, I don't care how many times he strikes out. Because with those numbers he is probably being productive though out the game, If he is hitting .200 and getting on base under .300 (like all of our favorite player Gallo /s) then I don't want anything to do with that type of player because when it really matters they are probably not coming though. -
What happens to attendance next year if the Twins don't make the playoffs and KC does after making a couple of moves?

Are people defending Margot based on Margot or to defend the FO and Manager? @chpettit19 has laid it out how bad rostering him has been, and I can't possibility say it any better. He has been league average as a starter (102 OPS+ and .714 OPS) as a sub his OPS+ is 21 and OPS .389, that tells me he should start against a left handed starter and pinch run only in games he doesn't start. If that really the type of player that should be on any roster? If you think this is SSS, his career numbers are (102 OPS and .696 OPS and as a sub 72 OPS+ and .591 OPS)

What have Julien, Wallner, and Larnach done in their limited at bats against lefties that gives people hope that they can overcome that during a pennant race? Margot has over 1900 at bats against righties with a .655 career OPS, he shouldn't be hitting against right handers. Jeffers and Lewis both have been given at bats against the same handed pitchers and have done well and thus were given more opportunities. Mauer wasn't very good against lefties to begin his career but he was also 21 and 22 years old, Morneau wasn't very good in very limited at bats at age 22, but by age 23 was showing much better signs of being at least league average. Also Mauer and Morneau were much, much, much, much better prospects than Julien, Wallner, and Larnach. They were all stars and MVP candidates at ages the three above were still in the minors.

You are correct, I don't know he is terrible, but since the Twins believe that and the small sample size of 71 at bats of .183/.231/.231 reinforces he probably won't get the chance. On one of the broadcast's they talked about this and were saying Larnach was better in the minors against lefties and he has been well below average at the major league level and with the holes in Wallner's swing he probably isn't going to be given much of a chance.

Great Win, can we now stop with the Twins can't make it deep in the playoffs talk? If they can get there anything can happen (Like a left fielder totally butchering a fly ball) and the team should do what they can to get to the playoffs. On a side not watching Julien's bat yesterday was painful and like watching a car wreck, he seems so lost at the plate right now that continuing to send him out there feels like cruel and unusual punishment.

I would add as a few days ago Castro had the worst average in the majors with RISP, so a bunt seems even like a better idea.

To me this reads as the Twins have accumulated multiple fringe level players on their 40 man and are looking to clear up some spots by trading said players to another team to take them on. IMO that really isn't realistic. Wallner is kind of the odd one on the list because he pretty great against righties and that has some real value, and Canterino is another with value because he really doesn't require a 40 man spot while the team evaluates what his real chances are.

Just to clarify he is the Twins best hitting outfielder against right handed pitchers. He is terrible against left handed pitchers, and since Larnach is similar, I think sending out one is a good idea. IMO that is Larnach only because of what Rooker has done. (Optics)

Phillies v Twins; 7/24 @ 12:10pm CT
TwinsDr2021 replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
and they are 7th in win % (which is pretty darn good) and much more important, because Runs scored really only matters if you are winning game. -
SWR was amazing and threw some filth up there, when a pitcher is dealing like that it isn't a surprise to have great plays made behind you. I will say with the lineup the Twins put out there last night against Wheeler, I was surprised they even had a chance, which is to give SWR more credit for what he did last night. I am hopeful Schwarber doesn't break out of his slump today.

My biggest concern with Snell has always been he runs up his pitch count and can have short starts. If you look at his game logs, if he goes 6 innings most of the time he is above the 100 pitch total. would the Twins run him out there for the 6th or 7th with a pitch count already in the 90's? Last year he averaged 5 2/3 innings and 99 pitches a game. This year 4 2/3 inning and 83 pitches, (His last 3 starts have been much, much better)

Didn't think or say the could get him, I said he is worth it to somebody that says he wasn't. Actually the 7 are included in the 29, but the real number is 57 which is still low, but not what I call seldom, since that doesn't include the number of guys that older but came up at that age. If nothing changes (and yes injuries will happen) going into next year these 12 eleven seem pretty set correct? Jeffers, Vazquez, Miranda, Julien, Lee, Lewis, Larnach, Buston, Wallner, Martin, Castro, Correa, that leaves one spot, probably not going to a prospect since it is clearly not a starting spot available. Ryan, Lopez, Ober, Paddack, SWR, Duran, Sands, Jax, Alcala, Topa, Okert, Stewart, funderburk, Duarte, and that is 14 pitchers, so I would say next year's team is pretty darn close to being the same exact team as this year.
-
Not sure what you are saying, is next year going to better than this year because they are gone? 25 is not at all old in baseball unless you have seen the majors yet, but if you are older than 25 and don't have things figured out it probably means the probability of that is real low. For example Wallner and Larnach hitting lefties, Martin's arm, Julien's fielding why because they aren't going to be given the chance or they somebody younger will be. Not sure what your definition of seldom is but 104 under the age of 25. 57 players under the age of 24, 29 under the age of 23, and 7 under age 22 have played just this year. I tend to agree with you are Schobel trade value, but I was commenting on why he would be worth trading for Kikuchi.
-
I am not saying they aren't going to be as good next year or even better, but you did say improvement until 27 or 28, next year, Larnach, Castro, Jeffers 28, Wallner 27, Ryan, Lopez, Ober, Alcala all 29, Jax 30 all healthy this year. Can't see Miranda improving on a 148 OPS+, Buxton healthy this year. A healthy Lewis should improve the team, but that will also reduce Castro's time. Julien/Wallner could be better as well, Martin is a utility player at best. If Emma or Keaschall are full time players something has probably gone wrong and that pushes the next best year to 26. Keirsey is currently a 27 year old AAA player that is hitting .277 with a .823 OPS, He is closer to being out of baseball than helping a playoff contending team. My point is quite a few things have went really, really well for the Twins this year, and just expecting those things will again the following year, with everybody on the team improving is a fools errand, and setting you up to say well 2026 will be the better year to go for it if all that doesn't happen. I am the type of guy that wants young guys up and given a change I said Miranda, Wallner, Julien, Lee should have all been called up much before they were and I would love to see Lewis and Festa (and Emma now if he wasn't hurt) be given a chance, but if you have to chance to improve a playoff contending with sacrificing the too much of the future, you do it and you do it every year, I mean what is having a great development system if you aren't, it isn't like there is room on a team for all of them.
-
He is worth Schobel (who I wish well), but minor league OPS is .714 and most of that came last year at high A, since at no other time has he put up a .700 OPS on top of a plays a position the Twins are seemingly deep in. The argument that the Twins aren't good enough to go far in the playoffs is an excuse that could be used every year from now until there is no more MLB baseball. The Window is wider next year? Really? how is this team getting younger? It isn't like the Twins have a multiple young guys just coming into their own next year besides Lee and SWR. Everybody else is already over the age of 25 (or older)and probably are who they are.
-
I wish the best of luck for Wallner, but I find it hard to be a second half all star, when you don't bat against left handed pitchers, are pinch hit for and was sat the second game after the all star game against a mediocre right handed starting pitcher. My thoughts on this subject is, the Twins don't need all star type of players (It doesn't hurt), they need exactly what they got before the all star game, solid play all around, better than average starting pitching and solid to better relief pitching, and staying healthy would be helpful.

but one of these times it is going to come up tails and people are going to defend doing it because he helped them win one game ignoring everything prior. People have been doing that for Vazquez all year.

Is this really a surprise with the guys the Twins are currently running out there (Because of injuries)? I mean Wallner, Margot, Lee, Martin, Vazquez and Castro (who based on the stat they showed yesterday has the worst average in the majors with RISP ) and Buxton has never really been that clutch guy has he? IMO the bullpen usage was the worst part of the series, not saying there really was a better way of using it, but going into a series with Philly after these two games puts the Twins in a tough position right from the get go.
