Several people jumped on me yesterday for suggesting Correa merited a day off. Now I see several people trying to explain that Correa is a bust, which if true suggests that a day off might actually help both him and the Twins. Is it worth this much emotion to see-saw wildly about our vicarious connection to a baseball team, or its players, or their salaries? Or their launch angles? Or their BABIP aberrations? Some folks apparently need the Twins to "succeed" to make their lives mean something, but if that success comes up short of an American League pennant then it's "not successful enough". It's baseball. A game.

    "mic drop"
  3. BH67
Both got the opportunity at the plate to start the 9th and the tying run came across. Buxton is evidently far from 100%, and this was Correa's first off day since the All-Star break. Robots they are not.

Outstanding effort by Cole Sands today to keep the Twins in the game while much of the pen got needed rest. "Spahn and Sain" in Chavez Ravine Tuesday and Wednesday, I reckon. Let's hope they can each go at least 7 innings.

73 bullpen pitches Friday. 73 bullpen pitches Saturday. Lopez used in a non-save situation after a save opportunity last night. This is not sustainable. But we're 4-2 against the Jays. Six cylinders of a V8 engine tonight instead of the usual four. Awesome to see 7 extra base hits, a 3-hit night for Piranha Luis, and insurance runs in the 8th. Never boring and never quitting, our Twins of '22.

Let's just put the Yankees and Astros into the ALCS automatically, right now.

Serious question: Would a less chummy manager get more out of this underperforming offense?
  8. BH67
Winning run on first to start the inning (thanks, Gio). Arraez, Correa, Polanco, Miranda and Gordon to follow. Nothing. A loss, if it happens, is due to the offense tonight.

The broken record that is I opines that the top doesn't inspire much confidence either. Buxton, Correa and Arraez could each manage a .900 or higher OPS month, but absent two of them doing so the Twins will fade from the race by Labor Day. Buck's injuries are mysterious but truly saddening, as I love his fierceness. I love the constant enthusiasm and confidence of Piranha Luis. And I'm thinking Carlos has a surge coming. When that happens, I'll start fretting about spots 5-9 in the order.

After one of the Twins' meltdowns against Cleveland in June, I said that the AL Central race had become the "hot potato" quest -- the contenders are doing all they can to give their opponents as many chances as possible to win it. Even more so in August.

Nothing so far tonight is due to the "new and Improved" part of the pen. I'm much more concerned about the top of the Twins lineup. Arraez is in his first slump of the season, and Buxton and Correa are really struggling with the bat. A rookie is the most potent offensive threat right now. Pitching help won't matter if that doesn't change.

33 balls, 32 strikes, and nary a hit through 4 innings for Sonny Gray. Whatever works... ACB out on 9 pitches first time around. Can only go up.
  13. BH67
ABC (or ACB in tonight's order) needs to spark the offense tonight against an excellent pitcher. A 1-2-3 bottom of the first will be disheartening from the get-go...unless it's the Gerrit Cole variety of 1-2-3.

Vin also called play by play on CBS for one of the most memorable Vikings wins ever -- the 1977 Mud Bowl playoff win over the Rams.
  15. BH67
Ryan rebounds well from a rough outing. 3/4ths of the new Twins make a huge contribution today. And the Twins bullpen needs only 50 pitches to hold the lead for 4 innings, precisely what the Tiger pen did yesterday.. The reinforcements are welcome. Now the top of the lineup needs to find another gear. If that happens, meaningful October baseball is quite possible.
  16. BH67
Detroit bullpen tonight: 4 IP, 2 singles and 1 walk on 50 pitches (36 strikes). Regardless of the Twins' missing bats, that's a big disappointment.

Just landed at the airport and heading home. Saw all but the Fulmer trade before the flight. Worthwhile upgrades at reasonable expense. Then Contreras homers. Must be jet lag.

Two prudent risks taken today. I'm fine if Falvine stops here.

The Twins dropped to +5 vs .500 on Friday for the first time since May 17. They've hovered between +6 and +10 for the previous two months. I remain convinced of their dauntlessness because they are holding steady in spite of various key parts slumping, getting injured, etc,, without exception -- usually more than one key part at a time. But one can bail water only for so long before exhaustion sets in. And we're here. Would a major trade be enough to make things noticeably better in the stretch run? I doubt it. A lineup that usually starts with Arraez, Correa, Buxton and Polanco should not be struggling this much. The bullpen blows up far too often. And the starting pitching is weakening considerably as a whole, which makes all other perceived upgrades meaningless. Falvine don't seem very good at plugging free agents into available holes. They are, however, showing a knack for drafting good pitching and developing it in the lower rungs of the farm system. The Wolves made a rash trade for Rudy Gobert, but he and a core of KAT, Edwards and McDaniels have the talent and attitude to make an NBA title run within three years. If they fail, at least it will be fun to watch. I don't see a similar surge happening on the other side of the 394 parking garage right now, so I'm against anything that provides a tourniquet at the expense of the future.

The 2022 Twins are the most unpredictable baseball team I've ever seen.

"Spahn and Sain" again this weekend in San Diego -- whew.
  22. BH67
Well, Miguel, if this our last ride together, go out in a blaze of glory. Thank you profusely for what you've done as a Twin.

Somebody else has noticed Luis Arraez's elevated MLB status. See the aptly numbered 2-Down clue in this crossword puzzle published this morning: https://www.brendanemmettquigley.com/files/1490ThemelessMonday.pdf

The Twins had nine off days between April 8 and July 17 -- and seven more between July 18 and July 28. Kudos to R&R for its contributions to a great baseball weekend.
  25. BH67
"Spahn and Sain" (Ryan and Gray) this weekend: 11.2 IP, 170 pitches (112 for strikes), 6 H, 2 BB, 2 R (both earned), 14 K. 1.54 ERA, 10.8 K/9, 0.69 WHIP. And I'm sure the SABR folks here can add to this meaningfully.
