  1. Ballgame! (as Cleveland radio announcer Tom Hamilton would say had Cleveland won -- but not today.) Twins 71-66 Cle 66-71 Magic number 21.
  2. The Twins won five of seven against a likely playoff team in a ten-day period late in the pennant race. If their lead shrinks, it's only because their nearest pursuers took five of six in the same timeframe against two similar teams. Regardless of what happens the next three days, the Twins are playing with confidence and determination. They're not going to "blow this," whatever the final outcome. (PS: Walker Jenkins has a 1.111 OPS at Fort Myers after today's game. At age 18.)
  3. I applaud Messrs. Floro, Funderburk, Winder, Jax, Thielbar, Pagan, Headrick and Duran for another great night in the bullpen. And even though Emilio's control was awful, he gave up only one run for the inning after walking the first three batters faced. His last month has been a big improvement from before. Now, Emilio shouldn't have been needed at that point, but Mr. Baldelli saw fit to blow through the bullpen depth by having the first five relievers get 11 outs on 36 pitches. Rocco literally expected seven relievers to handle the last 17 outs and preserve a narrow lead. I'm sorry. Expecting seven pitchers to each keep a run off the board to win one game is ludicrous. Duran needed to pitch the 9th the last two days to rebuild his confidence. It appears to have worked. And five runs in the fourth after the first two batters were retired, followed by the 10th inning surge against Aroldis Chapman, were a testament to the grit and tenacity of these Twins. They'll win the division, much sooner if their manager would get out of their way.
  4. Didn't seem like a situation to use Duran, but then I noticed he was facing 1-2-3 in the Rangers' lineup. That should be a confidence booster for him. Thanks to Ryan, the Twins had a real chance once Scherzer's night was over, and the bats delivered. Magic number 23. By the way, the Twins' final nine games are home against the post-waiver Angels, home against the A's, and on the road against the Rockies.
  5. Duran is that closer. Today he didn't do his job, and unfortunately a closer not doing his job is often the biggest contributor to losing a game. Given a huge opportunity, Jhoan blinked. But that's our horse, and we ride him as long as he stays healthy. Hopefully he figures it out mechanically...and emotionally.
  6. Cheers to Pablo Lopez for overcoming a slow start and getting through six innings. Cheers to Michael A Taylor for again showing a hot bat in clutch late-game situations. Cheers to the Twins' evident resilience despite falling behind early. Not discouraged, or even disappointed. Go get 'em tomorrow.
  7. July 24, 1965 Cardinals-Dodgers. August 22, 2007 Rangers-Orioles.
  8. My favorite three-inning save happened when Texas beat Baltimore 30-3 some years back, Texas's starter went six, followed by a single reliever. That box score is my second favorite, behind only the 1965 game where Bob Uecker homered and drew an intentional walk off Sandy Koufax.
  9. It would still be a crunchy raw dead frog, no matter how lovingly they frosted it with glucose.
  10. Box. Of. Chocolates. QED, I enjoyed the salted caramel this weekend, undoubtedly. The next three days vs Cleveland will be either Chocolate Truffle or Crunchy Frog -- nothing in between.
  11. Gallo and Floro should not play another game for the Twins. Thielbar and/or Pagan should have thrown a second inning. And I'd be making seven figures if the Twins cared what I think. Can we clone Tom Kelly?
  12. Bullpen depth problems? When has that ever happened for Falvine? /s
  13. Spicy. Dominant. Fleeting? Is Ernest or Julio Gallo available instead?
  14. The Wind Surge enter today leading their division of the Texas League in the second half. They're not done yet.
  15. There was a palpable foreboding on the game comment board the moment Gray's perfecto disappeared. And it's sad, and eerily predictable, how often the 2022 and 2023 Twins have justified such feelings.
  16. Guardians salvage a split vs. the Tigers. 5 up with 39 to play, I suppose I should panic.
  17. Struck out the side in the 9th tonight vs the Pirates. Threw 13 strikes out of 14 pitches vs. the Tigers. I'll say "No."
  18. In yesterday's wrap I indicated the need for a solid bullpen en masse to succeed in today's baseball. And lo and behold, I get a textbook example today. Maeda struggles through four innings. Possibly a sign of him worsening, but it happens to everyone not named Greg Maddux occasionally. Floro throws six pitches to get through the fifth...and then Pagan, in perhaps his best stretch as a Twin, gets through the sixth on 15 pitches. And then...Jax, who got pounded. And then Balazovic. And then Winder. I would never count on five relief pitchers to be awesome on the same day. And considering how few pitches Floro and Pagan threw, why not keep each in for a second inning? Perhaps the SABR-metrics backed Rocco's switches in those instances, but the consequence is an expectation to nail the Pick 5 at Canterbury.
  19. Success in modern baseball seems to depend most on the quality of the bullpen en masse. Not my flavor, but oh well.
  20. After this week, my only advice is the following, as spoken by Faber College ROTC student Kevin Bacon: Remain calm. All is well.
