  1. Yes, I do. When the difference is between 5 and 20 million, or whatever Cruz will get. What more productive player do you propose for 5 million?
  2. Austin had far fewer at bats. Cron played more last season than he ever has. If Cron being DFA'd by TB counts as a strike, so does being traded for Lance Lynn. /sarcasm-kinda I doubt Cron prevents us from signing a RHed OFer. Again, we have holes at 1B/DH. We do not have plenty of corner infield bats.
  3. The "it's not my money" argument doesn't hold much water with me. The dollars you want to spend on Cruz can be better spent elsewhere in the pursuit of wins.
  4. If we want to use big money on a position, I'd put 1b/DH pretty far down the list. If the Twins continue to bargain shop, I'm not sure that should be an indictment of Cron, or have this particular pick up.
  5. But enough to justify Cruz's outsized cost? That's the real question.
  6. 1) No one was arguing that 5 million is more than the minimum. But 5mil for .800 OPS is affordable even from a 1b/DH. 2) Cron has actually posted a season of 30/.800. Austin doesn't have that. If you're unwilling to predict a repeat for Cron, upon what basis do you predict Austin will be equal to Cron? Projection? Small-sample size? 3) The splits suggest the two players could compliment each other despite the same-handedness.
  7. Did you see the splits? Cron has a track record; Austin just doesn't. That should matter. (And Cron is hardly expensive).
  8. You're penciling Austin in for 30 HRs and a OPS north of .800 OPS? If Austin produces during ST, I'm pretty sure we can still cut ties with Cron. And we do have holes at both 1b/DH; so we may need both in the lineup, unless you're counting on Grossman, whom I think is real roster casualty.
  9. Those splits are not what I expected. Very interesting, maybe he does make a good platoon partner with Austin.
  10. I recall it being discussed here before that players on arbitration don't have their salary guaranteed prior to the season. Someone more knowledgeable/smarter than me may know for sure.
  11. We arguably have holes at 1b and DH; I don't think his contract is guaranteed, like Austin, he could be waived at any point before the season at no cost, so should the Twins find a better option, they can release Cron/Austin. As others have pointed out, I think this probably spells the end for Grossman.
  12. I wanted to like that show, but something made me cringe. Let me know how it goes.
  13. I watched the first two episodes of the season and really just forgot about it, when Patriots second season dropped. House of cards is the kind of show that has a baked in ending, and they just kept pushing it off, until I don't even know what the stakes are anymore.
  14. I'm lukewarm on Mauer. At worst, he goes the way of Ichiro, and retires when he shows he doesn't have it. And at the right price, Mauer isn't a negative player (though of course, we'd want someone better, but with both 1B and DH open next year, I don't think he'd be blocking anyone right away).
  15. Smarty! And non-relevant, which I think is your point.
  16. How many languages do you know? I studied Spanish for several years and French, too. Neither stuck with me. It's harder and more time consuming to learn a foreign language than people are willing to grant, evidently. Do I wish he knew Spanish? Yes. Do I think it's fair to hold that he doesn't know Spanish against him? No.
  17. What I had heard was that he already talked to Mauer and would welcome him on the team. I'm not sure he's advocating for Mauer, but rather being respectful towards the team's most popular player whose on the cusp of retirement. I mean what is he suppose to say publicly about Mauer on the first day on the job?
  18. I don't see what his intelligence or his education have to do with learning Spanish. It's not as if he could learn it by osmosis, he'd need to study it and probably go through an immersion program, which would take time, likely time away from the work experience that led to the job he just got.
  19. I like his story, his pedigree, and his name. Well done, Twins.
  20. Some scholarships need to be renewed each year/semester. I had a student "lose" his scholarship when he tore his ACL at Western Michigan. Though it was before Fleck was there. But that's an anecdotal experience.
  21. Except for a track-record of putting that skill-set towards winning...
  22. I really enjoyed the Netflix show Maniac. It's weird, but really stylish and moving.
