  1. Pryor has a career SO/9 of 9.8. Bet Anderson can bring that down. So, they got Pryor just for the challenge he presents!
  2. Logan Darnell has pitched very well in AAA, but doesn't inspire many that he can succeed in MLB. Moving KC would give us a chance to see what Darnell, and perhaps also Johnson, can do. Might as well give them their shot this year. If they cannot cut it then we already know that going into next year. A wise move, unless they've already written off next year, too.
  3. Thank you Nick. These are good highlights. The Twins had won only 3 of their last 14 games until taking the last 3 from Seattle. The optimistic points you bring up are helpful to my heart.
  4. As it looks to be another lost season, this makes some sense. Just don't trade him for nothing. I would like to see them get a guy who may be a higher risk but has a high ceiling rather than worrying about his floor. Way too much of that goes on in this organization. For example, our GM's risk aversion has us starting Nolasco rather than Kazmir, though Kazmir's was the cheaper and more short term contract.
  5. I would relieve TR of the GM role with a great deal of thanks and perhaps a role in the organization. I would hire a GM who sat Gardy down and explained that, while loyalty is a good thing, his loyalty to Anderson and Vavra sadly exceeds his loyalty to the Pohlad family and the Twins fans, and that is not acceptable. The new GM would have the flexibility to keep Gardy if he/she chose, but would have Gardy on a relatively short leash. I don't want blind loyalty, but I don't want the Twins to fire people just to fire someone, either.
  6. The Twins went out and spent big on free agent pitching during the offseason, and yet they still can't seem to escape the same old outcome: eroded depth and a totally inadequate starting staff. TR went out and signed Nolasco. Scott Kazmir signed a 2 year deal for less money per year. No one anywhere would have suggested that Nolasco has the ceiling that Kazmir has. TR is into risk avoidance. He would rather have a 31 year old league average pitcher than a 30 year old who is clearly far superior, but has been injured in the past. (Kazmir's 2nd half last year was excellent) This is not the attitude that wins a World Series title. In this day and age, I do not believe it is the attitude that will ever win a World Series title.
  7. I think it's asking too much of Hughes to take on the Rangers by himself.
  8. They're going to really work that pitch count up on Weaver, get into the bullpen.
  9. Very optimistic about this kid. I hope that everything he puts in his mouth has to be OKed by Twins trainers. One more drug suspension and he will need to be Willie Mays to have anyone look at him. Nice write-up. Thanks
  10. A nice precis of our team. Most players feel they are demoted too soon, even if the fans have been calling for their demotion for some time. Most of them have a ton of confidence and have succeeded at every level. You kind of have to get that to understand that these guys get a long leash so they actually understand that they have things to work on. While our AAA pitching staff is really doing well it is not certain that they are all going to show up in MLB and be lights out. I'm sure that we can improve our team. No one, including anyone on TD or employed by the Twins, knows the best way to do that. Nonetheless, I join many others in being very optimistic about our future. Bottom line - expect some cautious moves. Progression does not have to mean a total roster flip. That, in fact, would be reactionary.
  11. Bringing up Pino sure seems to be getting a lot of flack. This is a guy with a 0.934 WHIP. He's doing something right. Why not find out if he can do that in the big leagues?
  12. Nice article. 100+ fastball. Hmmm... Thanks
  13. I spent part of the winter claiming on these posts that we should not spend a fortune on Stephen Drew after his career year, but give Escobar a chance. He had, in 2013, gone back to AAA and really picked up his hitting. He's my guy this year. Really happy that he's doing so well. Gotta love Arcia, too.
  14. I was going to 'LIKE' your post until I saw the Joba comment....
  15. Our DH position has actually hit quite well. And I don't know what your checking account balance looks like, but I bet the Pohlads don't consider $7,500,000 to be 'modest cash'.
  16. Correia is starting to look like a genius. That kinda has me flummoxed.
  17. That was some of the most painful pitching I've ever watched.
  18. I don't really feel anyone has a right to act surprised. He has been a league average pitcher in the NL since his career year in 2008 (124 ERA+, 1.102 WHIP). His SO/9 rate has dropped (by over 20%), as has the SO/9 rate of almost every pitcher who comes to the Twins and starts to work with Anderson. I wish him the best. Not expecting very much.
  19. Nice look at it John, but you're mistaken. I have tickets to Wednesday's game. So the Hughes/Darvish match-up is actually one day early.
  20. These are indeed oddities. I am especially surprised that we've not seen home runs from Plouffe. If someone had told me he would have 1 home run this late into the season I would have thought it was because he wasn't getting much playing time. I like it that he leads MLB in doubles, of course. The home runs will start to appear.
  21. If they give Bernier a chance maybe Arcia will eventually replace Florimon.
  22. Walking Drew suggests that Tonkin hit his pitch limit.
  23. Yes, Darby's is kind of a high-end dive. Nothing quite like drinking beer in an alley before the game.
  24. I think that what I've learned about Terry Ryan is that he just doesn't see the advantage of hiring high ceiling guys. No one would suggest that Nolasco has greater potential than Kazmir. But we didn't offer Kazmir a contract (not that I ever heard rumored). And Kazmir signed a 2-year contract for less than Nolasco's average per year. The Pohlads held his feet to the fire and told him to improve the team. He went out and hired career average arms (except that they are older now). For this I give him a D. In general I would give him a C-, and I feel that is generous. Yes we've had some good years, but take Santana off the roster and you probably have very little one might call successful.
  25. Oh Sconnie... You had me up to 'Mark Walberg'. I'll write his name in, though. (Colabello's, not Wahlberg's)
