  1. Bartlett with a hit. Bet he's glad he's got that behind him.
  2. It appears that 2011 was a career year for him in MiLB and MLB. Sadly, he's had nothing like it before or since. Good luck to him, but he has no business on an MLB roster until he gets something figured out. And that something needs to look like it did in 2011.
  3. Thanks for sharing, AJ. Well said. And as always, best of luck!
  4. It seems likely that the best long-term option for the Twins would be to keep Pinto in AAA catching 5 or 6 days a week until: a) he satisfies the coaches that he can be an adequate defensive catcher, he shows that his hitting last year was not a fluke, and c) he has spent enough of this year in AAA so push his service time clock back. I suspect all 3 of those will factor into decisions regarding Pinto. It also give Hermann a last chance to display in MLB the skills that made him an asset at the plate in AA.
  5. Do not underestimate Arcia's arm. I read once that Hicks said Arcia has a great arm. Also, Sano has a cannon. Almost certainly better than Mauer. If Sano cannot stick at 3B they'd likely move him to RF. That said, Mauer would probably be an upgrade in LF. It will be interesting to see what happens, but I suspect he will play 1B until he retires.
  6. This is EXCELLENT news! Easier on the fielders as well as the fans.
  7. That is ABSOLUTELY the reason one of the most feared hitters in baseball didn't get in to the HOF on the first ballot. Stupid baseball writers.
  8. I believe that the best reason to start Hicks in AAA is to get him confident in himself. A lot of AAA pitchers have been in MLB. He hits them and he should be confident he can hit MLB pitching. When he is back in the major leagues I want him to succeed!
  9. The rarest and most coveted type of prospect in the Minnesota Twins' system has been the hard-throwing, dominant starting pitcher. I don't think that this type of pitcher was particularly 'coveted' by the Twins. For years they attached more importance to a pitcher's height than to his SO/9 (or SO%, if you prefer). I believe they only recently have started to value the strikeout, and not a moment too soon.
  10. Apparently this formula is highly regarded: 1. Acquire many, many average arms. 2. Hope one of them shocks you with how good he suddenly is.
  11. There is no question that the attention poured on Jeter's every move is nauseating. The Eastern sportswriters are a sad lot in the way they praise this guy for plays many others have made. Also, I hate the Yankees. I wouldn't cheer for the Yankees if they were playing Al-Qaeda. That said, Jeter has been an outstanding player. I hope the boo-birds keep their yaps shut. It makes us all sound kind of sad. Like Twins fans are whining that they don't have a SS who hits like Jeter has.
  12. Yeah, it worked so well for the Cubs.
  13. Agreed! I think Baylor's HR gets overlooked. He was a real asset to the team. I remember when they got him in late August of '87. It was a sign that they were really going for it.
  14. Half a century is a pretty long time. This season we will be a year short of 50 years since Allison made his catch. There was a runner on 1st. The Dodgers had the great Koufax pitching for them. The doesn't look all that impressive, perhaps, but it was really big.
  15. Just have to say.... I love the title of this thread. Over Moderation It's like a guy who can't do anything right.
  16. Johan Santana is listed at 6" 0", which I believe is a little generous. Being tall is no guarantee of success, just as being under 6' 3" does not mean that the guy can't pitch successfully in MLB. For years the Twins specifically drafted tall pitchers. That was one of the things they really took into account. Now when we need good pitchers we get them as free agents.
  17. Um, to improve our offense? Because there are so many better hitters out there? Did many platoons OPS better than .880 last year? Please help me understand how you reached this conclusion. Thank you
  18. We don't need no stinkin' badges.
  19. “Oh, here I thought we were going to do an interview about Saskatchewan.” Excellent!
  20. Did anyone else bother to sort his predictions by BA? According to Clay Davenport, Mike Trout is going to lead MLB in batting average. He will hit .297. Davenport needs a new program to work with.
  21. I think it was a good trade for both teams. Span did not produce like we all expected, but for the Nationals it made sense on paper. Remember that Meyer had arm issues before. They may have thought he would never get past those issues. As things sit right now, I really like this trade for the Twins.
  22. Kershaw signs a contract that sets him up for life at age 25. He HAD to jump at it. 2 years from now they probably couldn't touch him for $30M per year if he keeps pitching like he's been pitching. And it's not a 10 or 12 year contract. I suspect Boras would have been looking at 10 years as a minimum. While this amount of money is well beyond any reality in my world, I think it was a good signing by the Dodgers.
  23. Wow. Jeter could soon be the third best SS on the team. (perhaps fourth, depending on their utility IF)
  24. Santana gets more love than I can figure out. He has not had an OPS of .740 or greater since he was a 17 year old in rookie ball. I know batting isn't everything, especially when speaking of a SS. Still, his MiLB numbers are not that eye-popping.
  25. This link shows players who will be free agents next year. There are some SSs there and some really good SPs. I don't really want the Twins to sign someone to a multi-year deal just to tie up money for the next several years. I will not get hysterical if the Pohlads put some money in their pockets this year. They've clearly lit a fire under TR. That is a great start. If they need a SS and a top of the rotation SP next off-season I want them to be able to go get those guys. At Fangraphs both Oliver and Steamer expect Drew's BABIP, ISO and defense to drop. Doesn't necessarily mean he would be a bad pickup, but I really think they will go with Eduardo Escobar and see what we can get out of him. Maybe go get a real SS next year if no one surprises us. Yes, I see all the stats. Just me, but I believe Drew will drop off a lot in 2014.
