  1. Nolasco is an upgrade over our current pitchers in that he is slightly above average. Kazmir and Garza would delight me. Arroyo as a third pickup would stun me. Did not believe Garza would be open to coming back. That would be sweet.
  2. Usually it is a team that has decided to go into a rebuilding stretch and wants to shed a contract. Think Cliff Lee if the Phillies decided they needed to rebuild. (Now, of course, you are all laughing hysterically at the idea of TR taking on a contract like Lee's. It is pretty difficult to imagine.)
  3. I am not a 'Joe Mauer is the savior' kind of guy, but I certainly respect him. This move looks to cover all bases. It more carefully protects him to continue to be a capable and available husband and father, and it increases the odds that he will be a productive member of the Twins for the life of his contract. Very difficult to find fault with this decision.
  4. Like. (I hate it that the LIKE button has vanished)
  5. They are. They came up with the new titanium mask. From what I've read, nearly every catcher who got a concussion last year was wearing one. Apparently they need to try again. Well, Mauer was a really fun catcher to watch. And fortunately, as raindog said, "His bat plays everywhere".
  6. Think of all the pitchers who will grow up in Russia and China and won't even consider signing with the Twins because they couldn't get on here as children. Alas, hackers suck today and endanger our competitiveness for the future.
  7. Really like the idea of aquiring Pineda. Cannot imagine the Yankees letting him go, however. They want inexpensive pitchers, too.
  8. Absolutely not sold on Hughes. I know his BABIP was high last year, but I don't feel he is a top of the rotation guy. The Twins need to step up and get someone whose upside is far greater than that of Hughes. That's my opinion.
  9. I'm still all in on Kazmir. So much so that I expect someone to remember I wrote this and give me hell if he fails/gets injured for us or any other team. I really believe he's back.
  10. Congratulations to LaVelle! I have always liked his writing style. Gotten some good insights from him over the years.
  11. It was a bit tedious. I thought the Rays seemed to have good pitchers so I went through them. At Baseball-Reference.com I entered 2006 Rays. Picked the ones I remembered did well (Kazmir as a 22 YO, Shields as a 24 YO), counted their ERA+ years >100, then skipped ahead a couple of years. Also checked to make sure they were actually drafted by the Rays. I may have missed one or two. Not saying the Rays are the best ever and everyone else sucks. I just believe they have done an excellent job in their pitcher selections. Most teams get lucky once in a while with a late round draft pick. I think they do that more than most others.
  12. Good response to my post, though above I am only highlighting one of your reasonable points. I was thinking about these guys: Rays pitchers 2000 Draft & later Pitcher >100 ERA+ James Shields 6 of 7 years David Price 4 of 5 years Matt Moore 3 of 3 years Jeremy Hellickson 2 of 3 years Alex Cobb 2 of 3 years But it is also true that every MLB team has struck out on their first round draft pick more than once.
  13. No argument there, but the Marlins and Rays seem to wind up with excellent prospects without going through the string of bad luck years like most other MLB teams. They are doing something better than the other teams. Year after year is not a coincidence. They are seeing something different. Teams should be trying to figure out what it is that they are doing different. That was the point of, 'Wittgren is not an isolated incident.' I refuse to believe that people in Florida are just smarter than everyone else.
  14. The Marlins picked this guy up on the 9th round? Their scouts must just be way better than ours. Sadly, Wittgren is not an isolated incident.
  15. One thing about baseball that has changed from the days of the 4 man rotations is pitch counts. First, you have batters working to get deep into counts. Second, you have a reluctance from the coaches to allow pitchers to throw 150 pitches. Should a pitcher do so, it would make headlines. Bet Bert did that several times and no one said a thing about it.
  16. All the talk about Sano and Buxton is fun. I really believe Buxton is more likely to be the one who becomes the face of the Twins. I am really liking this young man.
  17. I didn't get that Brock was suggesting that, but I wondered about it at the time. Albers' numbers were better than Gibson's when Gibson was called up.
  18. " I hope my opinions are wrong, but I have seen precious little to refute my opinion." Sadly, everything about this is correct and almost none of it is subjective. The main two things we got out of 2013 were 1. Brian Dozier may have emerged as a good, solid 2B for the future, and 2. our minor leaguers are a year older. That is too short a list for a team with over 290 losses in the last 3 years.
  19. Sadly true. I hope that this year appears to have more going for it than 'our minor league players are a year older', which is most of what 2013 gave us. It may be true that Morneau, Willingham and Doumit would have all been moved had they been performing better. And if ifs and buts were candy and nuts.... I really want the 2014 season to be a clear step forward. If that starts before 2013 draws to a close, all the better.
  20. Nice article. This could be a tough sell, Codie. Runners will argue that a catcher blocking the plate deserves no quarter. Even as a former catcher I can understand that. Collisions should be few and far between, and they are. When they happen it is often because the catcher is trying to avoid letting the other team score. A catcher sees himself as the last possible line of defense. A dangerous choice, to stand in the way of someone with a full head of steam coming down the line. But with the results of a whole game on the line it is a choice that is made in the moment, and not always the practical one. Banning collisions may be the right thing to say. It ain't really that easy.
  21. Yes Cody, things are looking somewhat bleak there. Oddly enough, Plouffe and Parmelee could wind up as a platoon in RF. That was one pleasant surprise, that Parms handled that position better than most of us expected. Don't remember what kind of OF Trevor is, but I remember that he's played LF & RF. Or maybe Parmelee will platoon with Pinto? RHP - Parmelee @ 1B, Mauer @ catcher LHP - Mauer @ 1B, Pinto @ catcher That is, if there was such a thing as positioning your players to help them succeed, like using platoons. We don't do that here.
  22. Had to come back one more time. Obviously I am reluctant about signing Hughes. Still, Nick... those home/away splits are pretty intriguing....
  23. Thank you glunn. That was very kind of you to find and post that. Please don't be offended if we don't all run off and read exactly what the IRS has to say on the matter. Peace
