  1. Like others, I would like to see the Twins seriously pursue Tanaka. After that... I think Scott Kazmir is the place to overspend. He is only 29 years old and had 9.2 SO/9 this year. He was on a 1 year contract with the Indians. for $1 million. You would have to make a substantial, multi-year offer, but you could get him. He would be an overpay, but that's how you get the ball rolling.
  2. I'm with h2oface - no to Garza. Cannot imagine him ever wanting to play for Anderson again. I am not a big fan of signing Lincecum either. Something is amiss for him. And I think he's going to be really expensive. Nice SO/9, though. Tanaka & Kazmir, that's where I'm hoping the extra effort goes. ('effort' is a baseball technical term - it means 'money')
  3. Not too bad, Riverbrian. Not bad at all. (at least two are right, and others off by just a couple of games)
  4. Pretty good article to get some talk going. I do, however, wonder what Zimmer meant by: Kyle Gibson was kept in Triple-A for too long, then stunk when called up. Kyle Gibson will hopefully be a good pitcher, perhaps as soon as next year. He was not ready for the show this year, though I'm glad he got his feet wet. BTW: All the strike-shortened years were the worst! Bad baseball is better than no baseball.
  5. You are going to be a star... in AAA.
  6. Interesting business. Thrylos was right, it appears. Shairon Martis was brought up basically so they could pay him a MLB minimum wage for a month. Kinda hard not to like that.
  7. Thank you Seth. I thought the bullpen coach worked mostly with the bullpen guys, but I'm sure they mix it up. Appreciate the feedback.
  8. Can you say the same for Anderson? The starting rotation has been bad, very bad. Is there no one who could have gotten more out of those pitchers? Is there such a thing as a 'pro' on the side of keeping a guy at his position whose sole claim to fame is that he did not ruin Johan Santana? I would be happy to be enlightened by some wise baseball person who could explain to me what it is that makes Anderson a good pitching coach. Then I'll have to take your word for it, as there is no evidence anywhere in MLB.
  9. Kyle Lohse improved after leaving. That was very kind of you to leave it at that, but haven't most pitchers improved after leaving the Twins? Haven't most of them had their SO/9 go up? And almost all pitchers who come to the Twins see their SO/9 go down. As the Fangraphs article said, when pointing out the Twins had historically low SO rates, Anderson seems to be waging a one-man war to stamp out strikeouts, simply because he couldn't strike anyone out when he pitched.
  10. Absolutely silly to have this here already. Thank you! I'm sure we'll get a lot of movement on these lists. Kohl Stewart wasn't even on the list of top prep players until he was well into his senior year. (or so I read)
  11. I just cannot imagine how Anderson gets to keep his job. I cannot believe there is any stat of any kind that suggests he is a good pitching coach. He might be a wonderful man, but I don't know why he's a pitching coach. Letting him go would have at least suggested they were trying to improve SOMETHING. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result?
  12. Meyer, May, etc. have some real skills. Unfortunately, there is a mountain of evidence suggesting that after spending time with Anderson their SO/9 rate will drop significantly, not to return until they leave the Twins for another team. Santana is the only pitcher I can find for whom this wasn't true.
  13. To be fair, I believe most of the posters here see that Gardy has done some things well. The frustration we have all shared leads sometimes to the idea that changing things up couldn't be all bad. You can want a change and not hate, or even dislike, Gardy. It is one of the options.
  14. On behalf of us older fans everywhere, I thank you for this post.
  15. I think the problem is the whole coaching staff. Anderson's great years exactly mirror the years Santana was with the club. Parmelee went to AAA and was mediocre. That is not the Parms of 2012. We need that guy back, because that guy could almost certainly be a big league hitter. I'm not a batting coach, but Dozier seems to be the only one who really made adjustments and improved markedly this year. I like Bruno and am not calling for his head, but I do believe that Parms, Colabello and Plouffe could all be serious MLB batters with the right guidance. I also realize that some guys are never going to produce above AAA, but I suspect that 2 of these 3 guys will before they retire.
  16. 2002 was the first year Johan Santana threw more than 100 innings. He was with the Twins through 2007. This is NOT a coincidence.
  17. Shane - agree on Garza. Cannot imagine he would ever go to a team where Anderson was the pitching coach. Regarding Pelfrey - where are these 'young pitchers with upside'? De Vries? Hernandez? I'd go on, but you get the idea. I agree with Howieramone, Boom Boom and Halsey Hall that Correia, Pelfrey & Gibson give us a start to our rotation. Maybe not the prettiest start, but 3 guys who can give us a chance to win some games. On this team that is a big deal. Would I rather have 5 pitchers who average 9 SO/9? Of course. I hope the Twins seriously go after Tanaka. I'll be really impressed if they get him because the FA pitchers out there are not terribly awesome and I think a lot of teams will target Tanaka. Pelfrey had a great July and August just coming back from TJ surgery. I would expect his arm was pretty tired by September. I don't think he's a bad bet. * edit: did not mean to put words in the mouths of Boom Boom and Halsey Hall - they spoke solely of Pelfrey.
  18. * should probably note * The 'catch lightning in a bottle' reference is a tacky and tasteless way I refer to what I think the Twins do way too much of every year. I would rather they signed players who were clearly going to be an upgrade. But that's just me.
  19. My point? There just is not room to keep all these AAAA pitchers. We lack a true starting five yet have to start cutting in a big way. Thank you gentleman for giving us your best, good luck and good bye! It is appropriate to thank these young men and wish them well. I also think it is appropriate to move on. Sign some other players and try to catch lightning in a bottle. Perhaps today Pedro Hernandez is better than Minnie von Moocher, but Pedro is not a long term answer. Let's see how Minnie does. And I really agree that it would be terribly wrong to block any of the younger kids because we are hanging on to guys who have topped out at AAA. Tough choices, but they have to be made.
  20. I noticed that, too. Hernandez, De Vries and Diamond? Is that what we have to close out our year? Don't get me wrong, I wish the best for all 3. On paper, though, you'd think only the last game of the year looks like we have a chance. We need serious help. Unlikely it will come from Cole or Pedro.
  21. Fully appreciating that it is a SSS, this has really been fun. I've only really seen a few of his at bats and I see that his SO rate is quite high, but he has a really nice swing. I wonder if being a catcher helps one recognize pitches. If so, his SO rate should fall.
  22. I'm not inside the head of any of these kids coming up, but I have to believe that some of that arrogance could turn to attentiveness when you are being told what to do by a Hall of Fame player. I believe we'll know Gardy's fate before the World Series is over. (my guess)
  23. I would rather the Twins had kept JJ Hardy. Cannot fully express how annoyed I was when the Twins tossed him aside. As evidenced yesterday, part of Gomez will always be bush league.

    Wow!

He can ask for the moon and he stars, too. He's awfully talented, but I see him being offered 8 years, $200M. Makes me think less of him that he's making it about A-Rod's salary.
