  1. Maddon would be awesome, but I cannot see the Rays letting him out of his contract. At least if I were part of Rays ownership, I sure wouldn't let him go!
  2. I, too, rather like the fact that occasionally a player gets called up in September just as a 'thank you' for their contribution. (Service awards?) Yes, there are guys who will contribute down the road and maybe these guys aren't going to be part of that. So what? This isn't football. I think it's classy that baseball has this way of acknowledging players who were almost good enough and were helpful to the organization as a whole.
  3. Great list. Fun thread. Thanks! Eddie Rosario - I, too, am a fan and have been tracking him. However, he did not dominate at AA. I cannot see him starting 2014 in AAA. In A+ ball this year - 231 PA - .329/.377/.527 (.903) In AA ball this year - 313 PA - .284/.330/.412 (.742) Really like Rosario, but I think it's back to New Britain to start 2014.
  4. I appreciate your cold look at the hard facts. I mean it, I really do enjoy it here and at your website. But this is a little far. There is no league that has been able to slow Pinto down in 2012 or 2013. I have never been quite the Gibson fan that many have been, but he could become a good #3 starter. I could probably write something optimistic about each of them but that would turn this rebuttal into fluff, the very thing you are so good at avoiding.
  5. This is not the coaching staff that you can hope to bring 'outside the box' thinking to the forefront. I like the idea and would like to see the idea given more of a chance, especially with the staff the Twins currently have to work with. Have the Rockies kept at it? What are/were some of the conclusions drawn? It is amazing how seldom thinking outside the box happens in pro sports. Remember that Bill James changed the way many people look at hitters, and this is simply not very long ago.
  6. I appreciate optimism, but Gouger is in La-La-Land if he still thinks he's going to win. Stinky is just mean. The Twins win 38% from here on out? Mean. Go Scruffy!
  7. Wow Shane - don't know if I could disagree more. Hicks needs to spend some time in AAA hitting the ball. To bring him back ASAP seems likely to only get us what we got at the beginning of this season. Parmelee at 1B is not going to happen until Colabello stops hitting. That may begin today, but let's see. Also, Parmelee has clearly run into some hitting woes of his own Presley is unlikely to be an all-star CF, but right now I don't see the Twins with a more certain player to put there. Willingham-Presley-Arcia OF looks to be the OF we start with next season. If other players show that they deserve to move in they will get that chance. For now I don't see it.
  8. Um, OK. I like Melky again.
  9. Fun thread. So far we have the following players listed for 1B: Colabello Mauer Parmelee Arcia Sano (did I miss anyone?) While I appreciate the fact that the easiest place for Joe to move is 1B, there are too many big bats in MLB that only play 1B. How flamed am I going to get if I ask about Mauer moving to 3B? Do you have an idea other than C/1B/DH?
  10. IF Pinto and Colabello continue to hit (and Pinto doesn't even have to maintain his .600 BA) then we have a new 1B and a strong (backup?) catcher. Doumit becomes expendable. He's been very good for the Twins and I expect can be helpful to some other team, though I would not expect much from trading him. Neither of these two really have a secondary position like Parmelee, Plouffe or Herrmann. IF they can continue to hit, well, they won't need a secondary position. It would also suggest that Parmelee, in spite of his AAA success and his surprisingly solid play in RF, may have a tough time cracking the lineup.
  11. Those are 4 names of young guys who are going to play their hearts out to prove you wrong. Hope at least one of them succeeds!
  12. There'll be no cow kissing here!
  13. DFA Ramirez? He has one of the highest BA on our team, second only to Mauer. Short of some major adjustment, Plouffe will not find a starting job on any MLB team. For the second half of the 2013 season he currently ranks 22 of 22 qualified 3B in MLB in BA, OBP and SLG (and, naturally, WAR). He is a talented guy. Something has to be found and corrected. Eduardo Escobar will be on the bench or at 3B. He will hit better than Colabello, Herrmann, Mastro, Florimon or Parmelee are hitting now. Of course, they should all hit better, too. No way does Hicks start the year in MLB. He has some things to work on in AAA, like his .660 OPS.
  14. For years Gardy played Punto when Nick wasn't hitting because 'defense' is so very important. Then, suddenly, Gardy says we need more speed up the middle. Now the focus is on speed? Clearly he was saying these things to prepare the fans for Bill Smith's Nishi/Casilla move rather than an honest assessment of what he felt the team needed. Like most fans, this was the move that made me question Smith's grasp of what was required. Hardy had (and still does) rated as one of the premier AL defensive SS. And I've remained annoyed with Gardy for being Smith's apologist about this move, too.
  15. notoriousgod71 - this post was wonderful! I think of myself as an optimist. I had almost forgotten that baseball fans pretty much HAVE to be optimistic, else they would damage the players on their team. Reading these comments has brightened my day. My thanks to all of you!
  16. clutterheart - Go over your stats again, but do it here. You'll see that, at least to this point, Dozier is above Cano in WAR for the second half of 2013. And this is not just a SSS. Not saying he will remain above Cano, but this kid has emerged as a serious player. edit: And he's done this with the lowest BABIP of any qualifying 2B in the top 7.
  17. We have such glaring issues in so many other positions I think Brian Dozier keeps his job until this is a much better team. If Rosario keeps hitting they will find a place to park him on Target Field.
  18. Given so many posters focus on SSS, are we now predicting immortality and stardom for Alex Presley? (if he keeps hitting for us, the least we can do is spell his name right - I think I counted 3 ways in these pages so far)
  19. As a reliever it appears that he was getting about 9 SO/9. They shook that SO stuff out of him. Good luck to Tim. These are fun reads and make you really want to pull for the guy. Thank you
  20. My issue isn't rebuilding, it's being dishonest. The marketing department should have come up with a "Who's Your Guy?" theme. The Twins will be awesome soon! Who is your young guy that you are pulling for? Parmelee? Dozier? Arcia? Plouffe? Who's your guy? This would have legitimized the rebuilding and been better than pretending that this team would be 'competitive'. That pretending thing sucks.
  21. And he's like 15 years old or something. You rock!
  22. I think they will do what they did with White and Liddle: fire a couple of the coaches who had little impact on the on-field performance and pretend they executed a major shake-up. Nothing will really change.
  23. Excellent point! My father used to say, "If Hrbek had played for the Yankees his birthday would be a national holiday". Mattingly was excellent, but I would put Hrbek below no one of his era save Keith Hernandez. edit: for those who don't know, Keith Hernandez was the Ozzie Smith of first basemen. If you don't know who Ozzie Smith was, just... forget it.
  24. Dammit jokin! You have a lot to offer, even if I often think you could have said it in a less abrasive fashion. I'm not a moderator, I'm just an Old Goat, but I value your input, so please word it in a way such that I get to read it. Thank you
  25. Everyone is ignoring the fact that he joins our team and immediately has one of the highest batting averages on the Twins. The 3 for 4 today didn't hurt, of course, but he is one of the most prolific hitters we have right now. I'll step aside now so all the bloggers who have been ripping him can tear me apart.
