Situational - fundamental baseball is lacking at managerial level. Applying pressure on the pitcher and defense. Bunting, moving a guy over to 3rd by sacrificing yourself for the betterment of the Team isn't Twins mantra. When a manager analyzed the crap out of game via his laptop and then can't adjust on the fly with his gut instincts, you get the result we got last night. Chicks love the the long ball, Bomba crap but when you can't manufacture many runs or a key run to win a game by not going yard, you lose majority of the games.

Ryan Jeffers is Secretly Turning a Corner
umterp23 replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So when Sanchez was on the shelf, Jeffers I believe played in like 10 of 12/13 games with Godoy as backup. During that stretch, he wasn't elite but I think he hit close to .275 or so during that stretch. What that tells me is he was getting daily reps. Getting daily reps at his age gives you some confidence, gives you some repetition and potential puts you in a groove. Every other day or every other 2 days doesn't. Not making excuses for Ryan, but hitting in a cage or BP vs live arms does make a difference. I still like what we are getting from him with the amount of day to day inconsistency he has gotten. -
Has Nick Gordon Proven His Worth to the Twins?
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So does Gordon or Arraez now become a trade asset at the deadline to make some upgrades to chase a post season birth? Lewis doesn't quite have the versatility as either, Miranda maybe but not quite. I think the key to this is Larnach, Kiriloff and Garlick. Who sticks in the OF when healthy and does Kiriloff make Arraez odd man out? -
Reevaluating Minnesota’s First Base Depth
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kirilloff hand/wrist injury is a long term concern for me. Hasn't been the same for almost closing in on a year (counting off-season) and has lost power in his swing. So he may be in AAA for weeks to come until fully healthy. How will we describe full healthy when you need your wrists/hands for a swing? Bright future for him when last year but what is the future now going to look like. Here is hoping he can be back to pre injury but not sure that will happen- 48 replies

When you look at tonight you have to appreciate the solid foundation of youth on this team and potentially for many years to come. Blend that in with veterans and mix and match hot bats to help offset the cool bats and wins are possible. I have always believed in pitching and defense is the key to 2/3rds of your win totals and offense mashing the ball to offset a bad pitching day get's you the remainders for your the year. Fun, fast game to watch. Ready baseball just like ready golf. Keep the wheels rolling and finish the tigers off today.

Ryan Jeffers Will Justify Front Office's Belief
umterp23 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
played in 73 game for twins and only 10 at catcher last year. So yes, not a good catcher -
Ryan Jeffers Will Justify Front Office's Belief
umterp23 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
good article and what I see in Jeffers is quiet confidence no panic approach at the plate. short season '20 he had not problem seeing pitches, working the count like he did in college and minors and then getting a pitch to hit with 2 strikes. in '21 same approach but missed his pitch more times than not, thus the .199 avg. Still disciplined approach, doesn't jump at too many 1st pitch at bats. Has good power and decent speed for a 6'4 230 + lb backstop. Give me .240, 20-25 HR's at back 1/3 of lineup, take that every year -
Will the Real Trevor Larnach Please Stand Up
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
would be curious to hear/read how the intrasquad games are going and player positions in those games. Maybe coaches are doing just what we are discussing to gauge readiness to be able to play all over the diamond at a high level vs just being so-so. on different topic, hate that there are no longer MLB free games of the week for spring training. MLB and fans getting the shaft for watching games till season starts. Oh well, not ready to pony up $100+ bills yet for season pass- 36 replies

Will the Real Trevor Larnach Please Stand Up
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Larnach has another good couple of days, if we are abundant in the same type of players others have said, could be time to move him in as part of a package for SP.- 36 replies

3 year opt out deal works for both parties. For Correa, prove I'm the best at the position to get another look each year on more money, etc.etc.etc. For Twins, great move in that you are allowing some youth at the SS position to work on are they the guy for the future at that spot. Good move to allow Lewis/Martin to work in the system for another year, takes some pressure off but it also generates some pressure knowing you may get that chance to be the guy 1 year from now. Downside is Correa gets hurt (can't control what-ifs) misses some time, doesn't opt out because health is a concern. Then we get him for another year to roll the dice all over again. STARTING PITCHING has to be the key moving forward in the next couple of days. Monday, team could be totally different again

Breaking Down the Twins Signing Carlos Correa
umterp23 replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Front office with a strategy? Jury is still out in my opinion. Made some head scratching moves/non-moves thus far in their tenure, but they sure have brought the buzz back this week, whether good or bad just depends on the seat you sit in. Starting pitching still is questionable, so maybe the A's become that dance partner over the next couple of days. Go Twins! -
Like I said makes some sense, didn't say I 100% agree with it. If the twins feel like move 31 year old catcher who has not caught over a half season of games, is blocked by a higher salary at 1st base/dh in sano and Kiriloff is the answer at 1st, then they moved Garver. I think he shouldn't have been moved. What the Mgmt team does now will give us an indication of youth movement or low budget financial commitment for the year. Time will tell

so the move makes some sense but also looks like a youth movement move. Wear and tear of a catcher above age 30 can be a factor, especially after the injuries last few years. Would have liked them to move Sano, but $11MM and inconsistency had to be a factor with no deal for Sano. If Kiriloff ends up in OF more than 1B, then Sano at 1st, then Garver could be your DH. Next domino to fall should give us more indication of youth movement or salary constraints

First call to your player rep was the right call. Front office guys are paid by the owners, so he needed to talk to Rogers first. Rogers can then funnel the message to all the guys. Not a big deal for me. I would think that Oakland, Cincy and other potential fits were on speed dial as well. He isn't going to say that in his presser. Go Twins

Second Deadline Passes, Still No Deal
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The games being cancelled will be at least 15 games worth as the owners will use that as another backdoor to service time to free agency. Young superstars service year credit toward free agency will be on yet another delay. Still "laughed" when Kris Bryant got hosed by not making big league roster to start season but magically got called up one day later than required year of service day allotment of days. Owners, we may hate them, but sure know how to run a business. It's a business and not a love of the game for them. Always will be -
Owners, Players go to Extra Innings, Extend Deadline
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Push comes to shove and the owners will get more the upside than players. the players union balks at anything today, the players will get the media hit as the guilty party. Owners leverage will win out, just a shame it took a 10am start time yesterday to start hammering away till wee hours Tuesday am. Billionaire egos by owners will win again. Woke up to birds chirping in the air (Western PA) and sunshine to start the day, could we finally be done. Let's hope so, if not college baseball is a good time right now -
Royce Lewis Continues to Get a Raw Deal
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
negotiations would be a good thing, but it is currently I puff my chest out and say this with a response of I puff my chest and hold my breath to be the bigger guy and have someone else say this. No such thing as a negotiation, it will be whoever caves first because of no income hits the wallet the hardest. Younger MLB guys who don't manage their signing bonus or current $500K minimum salary feel the most heat and urgency to get back to doing their job. Black eye for everyone involved -
Can Ryan Jeffers Get His Groove Back?
umterp23 replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Bring up soft hitting .140 rortvedt. Ouch, not the answer. Lousy defensively not so much for Jeffers. He is pretty much on par with any other backup catcher in the bigs. Caught Stealing 23%, Garver 23%, Rort 44%. So Rort had better % but way less opportunities, so take that with a grain of salt. Stolen bases aren't solely on the catcher, pitcher plays a part, so in depth analytics on who attempts a steal, who was pitching, situation, etc comes into play. So. Fielding % Jeffers .994, Garver .996 and Rort .989. So on paper, reason Rort is in the minors -
Could There be Progress Made on the New CBA soon?
umterp23 replied to Andrew Mahlke's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hockey = grape, MLB = Strawberry, NBA = Apple, NFL = Watermelon. They all can break apart, just how much force to do it. You have your diehards in every camp that will support their team/league. Owners are looking out for themselves as they run a business, players make a crap ton of money for a game they are suppose to love, but its a business. Manfred as a commissioner has a lot to be desired but not a single commissioner works for the players. So the tug of war will continue, the he-said/she said public banter will try to lesson the fans on who hates who. It will never happen, but pay each major league guy $1MM base salary every year and then incentives galore to make their money. Reset each year, players will play to earn their money each year, vs guaranteed money and if I have the sniffles, I'll sit out for a few days. What a profession to be in! -
Do the Twins Have Tradeable Assets?
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Throw Larnach as a sweetener, used that in another post. If Kepler is moved, then I guess Larnach is playing daily. Kepler stays, I would play Kiriloff in OF more than 1st base. He can spell Sano couple days a week and you could put Gordon in utility role. Arraez I would move with Larnach and pitching prospect in a 3 for 1 or 2 deal to get a quality starting pitcher- 26 replies

Would have, could have, should have signed this guy, that guy, but we get this guy commentary is about what I thought I would read this morning. It takes two to tangle and maybe, just maybe, we have had conversations with some of the better targets off the board and threw a contract out there. The player and agent could have easily said no thanks, appreciate the gesture and moved on. We will never know the what ifs side of things. So it comes down to quality for the price tag and how much price tag wiggle room do we really have. Probably not as much as we think there should be. Lockout is on, no news on player moves till 2022. Once the gates are unlocked, the mad dash is on. Hopefully Mgmt won't be still in taking their warmup suits off when the other offices are out of the blocks. I still see a trade going down when the lock out is over to grab a top 3 rotation guy, who not sure.

What Might Buxton's Future Production Look Like?
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
on paper nice exercise, but in real time action Buxton has to appear in 100 games a year at a minimum during his contract. To be the guy, day in day out, number should really be 130 games a yea. Biggest problem I see for him to be elite and a true difference maker can't be 1/2 the season year over year. Let's hope the injury bug goes on hiatus for him- 17 replies

A Reunion with Nelson Cruz Still Makes Sense
umterp23 replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
he hit low .200's after the trade is a telling sign for me. Some will say change of scenery, living out of a suitcase as potential factors. I say not so fast, when you get traded to a contender to make run for post season, his juices should have been flying high. Liked him for what he was, but not for what he might be at a $10MM+ price tag. Say hello to the national league for Cruz if DH gets implemented. -
Pretty big gamble to trade both but very interesting concept. Garver with the injury last year to the you know whats, to me is the long term concern. Turning 32 this year and needing more rest to the knees, lower back and his manhood, has me thinking at best 75 games at catcher. Do we really want Rort who is probably a year or year + away from being a go to guy? Probably not. Trading Jeffers is risky because of youth compared to Garver, more seasoned and to me Rort is still a solid #3 catcher behind these two. Won't say no if the return is there though
