Three Questions Awaiting the 2022 Twins
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At least no one has brought up Lewis yet. I have seen comments in the past that Lewis is heir apparent at SS and it could be next year or after. Not sure that is viable option. Handful of games since 2019 with a knee injury doesn't bode well for a SS position that has to move quickly and plant throw etc. SS needs to be addressed with a long term (meaning not a one year deal) FA acquisition. If Gordon is the better option, then make it so if you don't acquire anyone. You need stability on a diamond with C, SS & CF. We have 2 out of 3, who is SS that solidifies the group. Very easily could have 1 out of 3 if Buxton moves on- 21 replies

3 Questions Byron Buxton Can Answer in September
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pay him what he wants, how about pay for 36% of what he is worth since he doesn't play more than that in last 4 years. What he wants and what he deserves are millions apart. No faith in the guy who had one out of this world month in his career. -

Not a bad thing for Larnach hit the reset button. It worked for Jeffers by getting off to terrible start in April and spent a month in St. Paul for May. Since his return, he has moved his stats upward and looks more like he did last year. So for Larnach, use the time down there to take a breath, work on some confidence with positive at bats and get ready for 2022.

NIck Gordon Sent to AAA - Is He a Long Term Player?
umterp23 commented on LA Vikes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
I like the Gordon move to AAA to get the reps most likely at SS/2B and not so much in the OF. Let him play the rest of August and then in September bring him back to see how he plays those positions. Simmons can be moved to bench player and farewell pack on the back tour for rest of the season. -
Twins should capitalize on overpay scenarios, especially from Padres and/or Blue Jays. What price will be enough for Twins to make the move? Fly on the wall in the trade bunker office for the Twins would be a fun day. I think you get something less impressive for Pineda, Robles and Duffy would be arms for the future but don't think it will be anything that knocks our socks off. Buxton move would be interesting, don't see them parting ways with him at this time. I'd like for Berrios to go NL vs AL

Game Score: Twins 5, Angels 4
umterp23 replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Jeffers as with any player will benefit from playing daily. I have been a big fan of day on, day off catcher rotation Rocco incorporates. The benefit for Jeffers that last few days has been the playing time. He has played 6 of the last 7 days hitting .285 during that stretch. So is he that kind of bat from an avg perspective? Could be as I like his approach, patient, sees pitches and has some pop. K rate is higher than anyone would like, some of that I think is he misses the one pitch he is looking for, fouling it off and then battles with 2 strikes. Got off to a horrible start in April but has battled back from that to move the needle in the right direction. I'm still on board with his trajectory of being a very serviceable catcher at the bigs level.- 12 replies

the most valuable trade asset would be if another team views him as such and he can be a solution. Yankees who need OF help come to mind. So yes for them and let's see if there is anything we value for in return from the Yanks

Buxton and Berrios Extensions Becoming Murky
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For Berrios does it come down to one simple question... Are you in or are you out? Simple in words but not so simple to execute. If the Twins believe they are in to compete for division next year and he is the cornerstone, can't call him an Ace because I don't think he is one. Then Twins have to make him an offer that would be in the $20MM - $25MM a year. If he is considered at age 27 the start to his prime years, then let's do a 3 year deal for $75 with option for year 4. That gets him to his age 30-31 year and let's see how we can close out the remainder of his career in Twins uniform at that time. If he balks at such a deal, then move him. Free agency is a tricky one where a player has to bet and bank on himself and for himself. Twins on the other hand have to show Berrios that they are in for the next year by not blowing up the team if they want him to stay. That could mean get the Buxton deal done now to show Berrios we are moving forward and not blowing it all up. If Berrios truly believes he is the Ace, the Man on the Hill then stroke his ego and name him the #1 for next year if he has signed a deal. Give him strong incentives to boost his pay annually and his year 4 salary would be based on his base plus escalators. For example: Cy Young, Playoff MVP, WS etc. He gets for example $1MM for MVP, $3MM for Cy Young and $5MM for WS title during those 3 years, then his year 4 kicker would be $25MM + the award money becomes his base salary. Pipe dream sure, but nice to wish for nice things- 32 replies

Trade Deadline Preview: The New York Yankees
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Berrios was to go to Yankees, only way I would do it would be to get 3 players in return at a minimum. Give me any 2 of the 4 pitchers that they have on their 40 Man - Abreu, Garcia, Gil and Gomez. The 3rd player would be 40 Man player in minor league SS - Peraza. That has to be the starting point for me. Don't want a guy with arm issues so obviously you have to be a little gun shy on that front in any trade. Berrios on Yankees wouldn't be their ace of the staff so the haul in return might not be worth it.- 7 replies

Twins Deadline Will Determine Depth of Failure
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buxton isn't worth the move at the moment, but I don't mind moving him in the off season. Career .247 hitter and lucky/unlucky injury upon injury doesn't give me the warm and fuzzy he can last 100 games per year. I can't justify $20MM a year for 60% game action. Rogers would be interesting move to bring something in return that is close to be ready, what that would be, not my job. Could you get a SS on the rise, SP or RP to make us for a 2 for 1 deal? Maybe. Berrios is the prize but is he a true ace on a staff? This year yes on Twins, but other contenders he would most likely be a solid #2 or #3 rotation guy, maybe #4 depending on the staff. So his haul in return fluctuates on perception and trade partner. Here I would demand back in return 4 for 1 deal: SS, SP, SP & RP. 3 out of the 4 top 100 prospects from said team we partner with and 2 have to be in top 20 in their system.- 33 replies

top 20 prospect list really is 13 guys since we have 7 in the injured category. I know you need a list but kind of worrisome that almost half aren't playing for injury reasons. Ouch

Hah is correct, point to you sir. I would imagine we will see Rooker after the trade deadline I would think. Brining Cave back to bigs, is very questionable move. Play Gordon in CF to spell Kepler and you have Rooker, Larnach and Kiriloff on rotation in the corner spots. Cave has to be odd man out

Minnesota Twins 2021 MLB Draft Recap
umterp23 replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
living in western PA (Pittsburgh suburbs), Fedko was a small school high school player (meaning it was a Single A Private Catholich High School) so the quality of competition was quite limited at the level. Never thought he was something more than that but he did have a solid career at UCONN. UCONN not really a baseball powerhouse in the Big East but was D1 Baseball. His father was a local news TV sports personality who rubbed many a people the wrong way. He somehow became the Athletic Director for Vincentian Academy where his son played baseball on the promise to raise funds for all sports and raise the level of competitive athletics for the school. Never happened and he got the boot. Just food for thought, doesn't mean the kid is bad egg though- 38 replies

Rooker is your righty at bat for the outfield and you send Celestino back down to AAA for at bats. Cave doesn't need to be called back up, doesn't bring anything better to the outfield mix that is already there. Garver catching for a few innings is nice to see, how does his body recover from playing a full game at catcher will be interesting to see. This opening line makes me laugh... With Jake Cave, Mitch Garver, Brent Rooker, and Willians Astudillo in the lineup for the Saints on Tuesday, this one played out just like you might expect when putting a lineup of major leaguers out against one of minor leaguers... Let's see, Cave 1 for 2, Garver 0 for 3, Rooker who has been with AAA for almost the whole year was the stud and Astudilo 0 for 4. 2 guys did all the damage.

AK and TL are doing what I thought they would. Have some very good at bats, results some good and then some at bats that they look overwhelmed. Welcome to the Show and they are holding their own. They are both a solution for the long term vs Cave who shouldn't be. Not worried that they could be sent down, but weirder things have happened. If they were to be sent down, it would have to be due to not getting consistent at bats, but they are doing that here, so can't use that as the reasoning. Gordon and Celestino being sent down, you can use that reason as they aren't playing that much. Still think Garver being active, he will get more playing time at DH than catcher for health concerns to close out the year. I don't think he starts every other day unless there really is no concern for health being behind the plate. Rort needs to get at bats at AAA and play everyday like they did with Jeffers in May at AAA.

Game Recap: Twins 5, Tigers 3
umterp23 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
didn't have to worry about Donaldson legs since he struck out couple times in his O for 3 night. Nice to see Jeffers get out of the mini-rut he had been in for the last week or so. Sano with a bomb, feast or fathom and he at least gave us one reason to like him last night. Creeps back over Mendoza line, see how the weekend plays out for him. Only 14 games under .500. Yeah us -
Win or Loss depends on how we view the trade(s). If we trade a guy we don't believe we can sign long term, pending FA and get some value back in bodies, it's a win in my view. Get something hell or high water and not put a hope on an agent who is chirping in players ear for more money. That's why agents are there. Now let's say we trade Cruz at the deadline with the thought is we can't sign him next year based on NL installing DH and he has many suitors. his value is $12MM for this example. We get 3 MiLB guys to take his place and one of them hits the bigs next year. His value is major league minimum and we save $$'s to use somewhere else (pitching and more pitching). That's a win-win. If Cruz doesn't like his FA options and twins somehow convince him to come back on team friendly deal, that would be win-win-win. My point really is pending FA gets traded, you get new bodies and then let's see what FA gets in a new deal and produces vs what we spend on new free'd up money.
-
Trades make sense but it takes two to tango. What do you get back in return? Rogers & Cruz would gather something near future useful. Pineda, Kepler & Robles would be fringe players in return unless front office can do some fleecing for the return. Only one trade deadline this year so will be interesting to see what meetings are had during all-star break.

Game Recap: White Sox 13, Twins 3
umterp23 replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Cruz has to be thinking can't wait to get moved to a contender, hopefully soon for his sake. Donaldson is playing the look at me card this week, not a team player. Would love to move him to dump salary and get some bodies in return. Shoemaker needs to go. Pat him on the back and send him on his way and somebody will be pick him up on the cheap. -
Only negative on Miranda I have is nothing athletic! Button your jersey young man, this isn't the Sunday am softball beer league. I'm old school for sure, but just a sloppy look. You can say I'm nit picking and I would agree, but I did say it wasn't about his ability. Donaldson must of gotten the memo about Miranda on his heels in the system, funny how he is trying to be a leader this week by calling players only meeting and hitting a couple HR's the last few days.

It’s Time to Pay Byron Buxton
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pay Buxton at this time, what is the pay for injury prone guy (bad luck or not on some injuries, injured nonetheless). Team friendly deal in today's market, not sure what that would be. I would say 4 year deal, $60M, with half guaranteed with incentives for another $20M based on games played (%'s), team leader in categories, player of the month, MVP, gold gloves, etc. etc.. He makes share under $6M today and his base goes to $15M based on what if he is healthy conversation. COVID influenced financials where teams aren't making hand over fist money with attendance restrictions, cash in has to be part of the conversation. His agent won't buy it though. Is worth a crap ton more, not in my opinion but I'm not writing the checks either -
Berríos or Buxton: Who is Worth a $100 Million Deal?
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Berrios yes. Buxton only if he would sign an incentive laden deal as karbo stated but I see today's athlete all about guaranteed money vs incentive. Agents being agents aren't going to go that route = Show me the money they preach- 47 replies
