  1. Because the Twins are so close to clinching, it would require a lot of losses by them. That makes the Magic Number they have against the other teams more correlated than if we were further out from season's end. It occurs to me that the same logic, that more is better, was behind the financial collapse triggered in part by bundled mortgages that individually were sketchy investments but thought to be safer when in a big group.
  2. Not sure I buy the logic. Each division has two 90+ win teams. Of these, Cleveland has the weakest record. If they overtake the Twins, it will have to involve a lot of Twins losses, and the Twins might easily have a worse record than TB and Oak. Oakland might be about to overtake the Twins in number of wins. Said another way, the Twins' magic number relative to either of them is currently higher than for Cleveland.
  3. Spoken like a good poker player. I think there's a lot to this POV. The aim is never to win just one series.
  4. Careful. If Mom ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Vote Mom.
  5. After last night's clutch performance, it's gotta be Torreyes, doesn't it?
  6. Not really big changes. Slightly disappointing year for Kirilloff, more disappointing for Lewis, and yet the movement in these rankings isn't major - this is all just guesswork anyway, despite state of the art analysis and scouting methods these days. Quite a slate of prospects in the top 100, and even if they don't all pan out, some will. I'm happy.
  7. I got back from a meeting and after taking care of a few things I checked the score. We'll probably pull this win out of the hat, but it's working out too difficult. Now I gotta go grab some sleep. Hope our guys win!
  8. Willians is literally last on the Twins in on-base percentage at .296. Cave's around the middle.
  9. It's Just Math!
  10. Also, there are no more good opponents this season. Be prepared to remain unimpressed, I guess.
  11. It's fair to question everything. Except, maybe, the right to question everything. Don't go there. You're not in the dugout, and neither am I nor anyone else. Just discuss the topic, not your fellow posters.
  12. http://didthetribewinlastnight.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Harder-Retro-Images-Archive.jpg Meanwhile, Cleveland's magic number remains unchanged overnight at Mel Harder's - 18.
  13. Lotta people asking that question even back in the day
  14. All right, Polanco on second, nobody out. Time to stop giving the opponent hope. Let's take the lead.
  15. Moderator's note: Please stay on the topic that the OP began. I found it necessary to remove a couple of posts that invited digression onto well-worn topics covered in other threads.
  16. No offense to Sergio but he doesn't have any bullets, just Nerf darts, so what does he know?
  17. You can look at his game log on baseball-reference.com, and sort his games by which innings played, and the pattern for his full games is quite favorable. That makes it fun. It doesn't make it meaningful. "A small statistical sample, as with flattery, is like cologne water, to be smelt, not swallowed." -- Josh Billings, sabrmetrician in the 19th century I mean, just to be clear, we're in agreement, just saying it slightly differently.
  18. It was a fun stat, and I ran with it as much as anyone, but it depends too much on a small sample of games relative to the full season, for my taste.
  19. I suppose receivers not getting open could be a contributing factor for that stat, too. Likewise a defective offensive plan, such as poor selection of primary receivers for a particular blocking pattern.
  20. Magic numbers don't go up with our losses or their wins. They only go in one direction. We still need a combination of 9 wins (or their losses), and we didn't get either today.
  21. Wait, did our Magic Number go up?
