  1. And Tampa right now might be odds-on to win this debacle after all.
  2. Julien looks really deflated after that gaffe.
  3. Baseball-reference.com does. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2023-fielding.shtml#all_players_advanced_fielding_c It says Vazquez's ERA is 3.54. Jeffers's is 3.33. The last time I remember reading anything about CERA, it was that it's too unreliable to put much weight into. Certain pitchers have designated catchers, the mix of the starting rotation with the team's catchers isn't uniform, catchers come and go from the roster, leading to small samples, and so on. CERA tends to fluctuate from year to year enough that a good result one season may not be repeatable. But what research I know of is old. Probably there is some meaning inside the raw data, but my assessment is there's too much noise to reliably sift it out. But, for what little (IMO) it's worth, there you have it. Our two catchers are remarkably even in this regard. I don't necessarily believe it.
  4. Too bad Simeon Woods Richardson hasn't pitched well enough in AAA to get called up for a spot start today.
  5. Remember yesterday when we discussed whether to let Pablo Lopez continue his start after giving up some early runs? Well, those incompetents running Tampa Bay have let their starter go 6 full innings today, giving up 10 runs (8 earned) in that span - runs given up every inning except the first and fourth.
  6. Kind of a Catch-22. If Buxton becomes injured, then he shouldn't come back and play CF when healed. And if he's not injured, well, why mess with success?
  7. He's the complete package. It's rare to find a 14-tool player.
  8. I don't know if I said much at the time of his signing but I recall liking the idea of stashing in St Paul a youngish player who at one time seemed to have a ceiling of major league regular. His progression through his mid-20s suggested he was ready to contribute, and then he scuffled at bat for two years at the major league level after a fairly promising showing as a 23-year old in the weird Covid year of 2020. So he wasn't far from being an asset, and it's slightly surprising the Tigers gave up on him with a minor league option remaining. He just turned 26 and may be simply a late bloomer where it comes to major league performance. Their loss, our gain.
  9. .... against the meat of the Toronto lineup. The fact that this part of the lineup came up again in the 9th inning is the fault of the pitcher who succeeded* him by not taking care of business against the bottom of the order, not the fault of the bullpen strategy. * I use the term "succeed" loosely
  10. I truly don't like to cast aspersions about character and whatnot. But the literal answer to your question is Yes. MLBTR has the press release on April 21. He pitched a stinker on April 22, after 3 consecutive Quality Starts (and an Opening Day start that was just shy of that).
  11. I left out the punchline of the original quote. Home run hitters drive Cadillacs. Singles hitters drive Fords. Folks who can't do either, drive delivery trucks.
  12. The results so far aren't stellar, to say the least, but managing isn't through a rear-view mirror. The question of a starter always is, is bringing in someone from the bullpen going to lead to better results than letting him stay and soak up the next inning.
  13. The economics of the game may have changed but the complaints about hitters trying to launch the ball remain fresh.
  14. Since the 1940s, at least. Attributed to Ralph Kiner: "singles hitters drive Fords." And before that there was this guy named George Herman...
  15. Lopez has had 7 fine starts and now 4 bad ones. Nothing much in between. Unfortunately, his 3 best starts were to begin the season. Since then, his ERA is up around 6. Something's the matter, whether physically or with the approach or with the command. Sounds like you are seeing the latter.
  16. We got a taste of their strategy less than a year after they drafted Chase Petty.
  17. Given the change in pronoun, I will be pleased to bring you a wheelbarrow of our excess zucchini later this summer.
  18. If your stuff isn't swing-and-miss, you're just a guy in the bullpen and will suffer periods of what they call bad luck.
  19. Only catcher Cardenas and right fielder Kala'i Rosario are hitting worth a hoot in that lineup. Somehow CR is above .500 despite giving up more runs than they've scored. So far. Let's hope for an upswing, no pun intended, from the hitters.
