What are the Twins Expecting from Trevor Larnach?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unfortunately, Larnach is one of the unathletic big bat, low 1st round pick whom the Twins had high expectations (so did I but I was open to trading him for the right price) & a lot of hype following him. I hope he can figure out the breaking balls & contribute to the team this season. But I'm afraid that his window has closed with all the new prospects ready to reach the MLB. It's more him increasing his trade value by adapting to the off-speed stuff. -
Is Matt Wallner Still a Viable MLB Bat?
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wallner has the raw tools to be an all-star. But the Twins only focused on trying to squeeze out a few more HRs while ignoring working on his defense & ability to make contact. Twins broadcasted very loudly that they were doubling down on the "all or nothing" approach & the league pitching was well prepared for them. The approach that helped kill Sano's career Year AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPS 2024 Regular Season 33 6 9 0 1 0 .273 .385 .718 What I noticed is that Sano has 0 HRs & decent BA & OBP. That shows me that LAA has focused entirely on Sano's problem of not making contact & got away from hitting HRs. -
Coming against the next AL powerhouse. Last night we fielded the worst INF. definitely far from MLB level. As I stated from the beginning, Santana was a waste of money & a roadblock of playing time for Miranda, Kiriloff & Julien to play 1B. Miranda had a great night, too bad he didn't have more help. IMO we'd be a better team if we bring up SWR & have Varland in long relief.

I'm sorry Sherry, I disagree with everything you wrote. I like Julien a lot but he's not a 2Bman. OAA can be very deceiving especially when you have the best coaching you in how to cheat (in positioning). What you need to look at is the actual range or even sprint speed (which Julien ranks very low) & DPs, MN ranked next to the bottom last season even with Correa. And it appears that he's worse this season, especially now w/o Correa covering for him. Last season Julien was the jewel of this team's "all or nothing" approach. This season he has yet come close to match that standard & he has trouble hitting LHPs. Polanco had been abused by this organization by playing hurt most of his career yet not spending time on the IL until '22. '21 was his 1st & only year he played healthy at 2B, where he played very well. If he had started at 2B from the beginning he'd have more all-star appearances as he had at SS in '19. Polanco had been our best clutch hitter until Lewis appeared on the scene hitting well at both sides of the plate. We lost on the trade, losing one of our best players & receiving no one that will contribute anything this season. I could further debate on this but I won't.

Well said RiverBrian. Even when Emma is raking, Wind Surge still has difficulty winning.

Agree that Varland has had some pretty tough competition teams to pitch against but from the beginning I've advocating Varland to start out in long relief & spot start, still do. I'm encouraged by SWR on the MLB level. The season & both of them are still young & promising, let's see how things shake out. Varland would be too valuable in the pen to send down.

W/O Correa & Lewis our entire INF is compromised. Farmer & Castro are good INFers but they aren't ones to play every day on the left side & they haven't played there for a while which was evident on Sunday. It was wonderful news that Correa won't be gone as long as originally thought. Hope they can get up to play better ball against a talented BAL team. I still believe we'll make the postseason, Hope everyone'll be healthy then.

Joe Ryan & Martin had a pretty good game; seems like Castro is ready to start to hit. Jeffers hit an HR but his best AB was his 12 pitch battle against a dealing Alex Lange in extra innings, he took what he gave him. Jeffers has modify his swing from the Twins' "all or nothing" approach. Sometimes he relapse & strikes outs a lot but here he was very impressive at this AB much more than the HR Wallner hit against McKinstry but the stats favor much more Wallner.

So happy that SWR pitched so well, confirming my faith in him. Sweeping this double-header has done a lot to help restore my optimism towards this team. Just what the doctor ordered.

Twins 2, Tigers 8: Sloppy and Lethargic in Detroit
Doctor Gast replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Our large INF surplus sure got depleted pretty quickly. Our INF stinks all a way around. CLE, KC &DET are hot (lucky to get those 2 wins in KC with Lewis). That hole could get pretty deep before Lewis comes back.- 49 replies

Great job Nick! Teams who are serious know defense up the middle is essential for winning, any offense is icing on the cake. The Correa/ Vazquez duo has saved us a lot of runs. The strikeouts are piling up & HRs are hard to come by we need their defense to compete. With the experience they pass on they are well worth the money spent. Where would we be w/o them. for one we'd have been swept by LAD. Very interesting that that Correa relay was planned which makes all the sense in the world because of Correa's arm. It'd was incredible if there was any bobble, any off throw, decrease in velo or hesitation in what to do, Ohtani would have been safe. It was more than perfect. That experience of Correa / Vazquez is invaluable.

One thing that have stuck out in my mind is how Kirby Puckett mentored Tori Hunter. I have my doubts on how much a prospect learns from coaches & that they learn so much more by being tutored by a greatly experienced veteran at their position. Puckett started a tradition of mentoring Hunter, Hunter to Span, Span to Revere. That tradition was broken when the Twins traded both Span & Revere at the same time. figuring that maybe Hick was so good that he didn't need mentoring. That broke the tradition & Hicks could have benefited from being mentored. Buxton has so much natural talent, I don't know how much he can teach younger players. I'm sure there's something. I don't see any stand-out defensive CF that comes close to Buck. I see both E Rodriguez & Jenkins not sticking at CF, I hope they won't be our best defensive options there. SS & catching are both very important positions. IMO Correa's value isn't only what he produces on the field which is remarkable but also what he mentors to the younger players in his experience.

Good to see our best defensive catcher in the system, Cardenas continue his clutch hitting. Seems like Salas & Cavaco been moved off their positions SS to 2B & 3B to 1B as expected. Although very different hitters, E Rodriguez like E Rosario have a flare for dramatics.

It's Imperative That the Twins Tame the Tigers Now
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes sir Ted, This is an important series. Hope with an extra day off they can get away from the "all or nothing" approach. Gets some key hits & not SO, win some games!- 19 replies

I don't think Correa will ever try to steal another base. We need Castro to get on base to steal those bases. Even though Buxton is excited about his new found health, I tend to believe his stolen bases will be limited. Martin is the one I'm really excited about running the bases. I'm not really concerned about Julien's offensive speed, although he leads off. What I'm really concerned about is his defensive speed (range). You can cheat a little to help his OAA but if a hitter doesn't hit as you expect you are vulnerable. Also you have Correa & Santana cheat towards Julien (further from the line) to compensate which makes them vulnerable. I'm not able to watch a lot of games but it seems to me that there are a few GBs are getting through that shouldn't. All this because the Twins are dead set of having Julien playing 2B.

I saw Tom's podcast, Olivar made a great play in LF. Olivar is very athletic with a lot of potential of being a terrific catcher once they start to develop him there.

I love Arraez's bat but I was in favor of this trade a year before it happened, a win/ win trade. I'd love another MIA SP trade.

Great pitching, great defense with Correa & Vazquez & great hitting with Julien. Some close games with LAD using our 3rd, 4th and 5th SP not a bad series. Hopefully the offense will really click against DET.

This offseason, I figured that MLB would adjust to Kepler & it'd be hard for Kepler to readjust. Losing Kepler at this point is no loss. With 20 ABs he has SO 6Xs, has hit 0 HRs, triples or even doubles. I was against signing Santana, he's been a waste of money & time taken away from Julien, Kiriloff & Miranda at 1B,

1. Martin for sure can be an everyday player & eventually lead off. 2. I was against signing Santana over playing Julien, Kiriloff & Miranda at 1B. 3. From the beginning, I was against trading (group 1) Polanco 4. Kiriloff is a pure hitter IMO should be in the line-up every day, whether it's 1B, OF or DH

Dodgers 6, Twins 3: Too Little, Too Late
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm a fan of Martin, & stood up for him against all the negative hype that's floating around. I knew it was a matter of time before Martin would start rolling. RH Martin showed that he can play every day by hitting ace RHP Glasnow which very few on this team have shown that they can. I believe that Martin will prove me right that he'll impact the Twins much more than many believe. Varland had pitched 3 great innings, I advocated & still am for Varland to piggyback with Paddack. To gradually add to his innings. Bring up Headrick to help supplement the pitching staff. The BP have been very good, A BP game against LAD, IMO was not out of the question. We out-homered the opposition but lost again. We haven't hit very many HRs but when we have, many times they are solos. Focusing on HRs isn't the answer it's getting clutch hits not striking out in the clutch. I hate to keep hitting a dead dog but I don't think the dog is dead. & this FO will try to resuscitate the dog when they finally turn things around. (sorry about the analogy, I'd never beat a dog)- 44 replies

Great presentation Theo! The league has got the Twins number & the Twins doubled down. If the Twins abandon their long-time-hitting approach, we'll be better off in the long run. IMO it'll take some time for those most affected players.
