  1. The first 4-5 games is as much about usage than anything. Getting everybody in, getting a start, etc. On top of that you need time for the roles to flesh out. Nobody expects Duran to be a one inning closer this year. We can probably really start looking for trends around game 15 or so...
  2. You asked for proof, I gave you proof, and yet you argue still... There is no cherry picking, the numbers are what the numbers are. The question you need to need to ask yourself is this: You need two innings pitched in the middle of the game. Who do you choose: Pitcher A: 6.50 ERA Pitcher B: 3.50 ERA We all know the answer here. Yes, sometimes pitcher A will get the call. But wow, what a huge roll of the dice when you have better options. I understand what I am saying here doesn't fit your narrative, but using analytics didn't just start yesterday. Managers have been using analytics for decades. What has changed is the types of analytics being used. Where do you think LOOGYs came from or pinch hitting a RH batter to go against a LH pitcher? How come nobody complains about analytics being used to derive the defensive shift or launch angle or spin rate? How about the decision to shade outfielders a certain direction? Sorry, but this is still all analytics, just of a different sort. Using analytics gives your team a better chance to be successful. Otherwise they would not be used. I think we will just have to agree to disagree.
  3. I would agree that someone like Joe Ryan should be given the opportunity to pitch later into games. You need to know what you have. But came up through the Twins system, he knows where the limits are. Someone like Sonny Gray, who has an extensive history of not pitching well 3rd time through does not really deserve that opportunity. Or, at the very least, should have the shortest of short leashes
  4. They rely too much on analytics! They don't let the players play! Their manager stinks! They don't know how to keep the team healthy! They don't know how to groom prospects! They don't sign quality FA! (They got lucky on Correa) They aren't honest with the fans! They wear ugly shoes! Falvey's hair looks like.... Sorry, got a little sidetracked there...
  5. Sample size being relative because of how little usage he had in that regard last year... I have been using the quote of 10+ ERA 3rd time through the order. I can't find that source and I look to be incorrect. However, I did find this article from last year: https://www.si.com/fannation/bringmethesports/twins/sonny-gray-makes-it-clear-that-he-wants-to-pitch-deeper-into-games Quoting from the article: 2016: 8.66 ERA third time through an order 2017: 5.66 ERA 2018: 3.27 ERA 2019: 6.12 ERA 2020: 6.30 ERA 2021: 7.25 ERA The ERA may not be 10, but it is still ugly. Dude has no business pitching the third time through the order. He should be happy the Twins recognize this. By protecting him and pulling him out early, he is staying effective and will generate a bigger contract next year.
  6. I would have to dig to find it, but this was a huge talking point when Gray complained last summer. The Twins and the Reds before us all kept his starts short because the numbers backed it up. I wouldn't be surprised if the OPS was down last year, but we are talking about a very small sample size,
  7. Fans do not care how many innings a starter goes. Fans care about wins. If the Twins thought they could win with 9 pitchers throwing 1 inning every game, they would do that. People forget that SP going 4 innings last year had the Twins in first place in September. Poor Sonny Gray needs to realize that him pitching the 3rd time through the lineup is a nuclear disaster to the tune of a plus 10 ERA. Numbers show that. Everyone knows it, including him. Do what you are being asked to do.
  8. Boldness ratings on your predictions (out of 5) Duran: B Possibly the least bold prediction you could make for the Twins this year Gallo: BB To me this is all about ABs. Right now the Twins look like they are going to give him a whole bunch. Ryan: BBB Seen a few places that have Joe Ryan as a Cy Young dark horse this year. If this happens... whew. Buxton: BB (115 games played) Buxton: BBBBBBBBBBBB (115 games played in the OF) Buxton is quickly becoming the next Edgar Martinez
  9. I put very little stock in pitching stat lines for ST. The first half of ST is about getting the feel for your pitches, working on command, trying a different pitch. They aren't necessarily pitching to win or put up big numbers.
  10. I would agree with assessment of Baldelli. Pitchers that show they can be effective 3rd time through, or after x pitches will be given some latitude. I am curious to know if the numbers back up the longer innings. An ERA of 5.00 for Lopez 3rd time through the order might be acceptable for a terrible Marlins team, but that will not help the Twins. If Lopez starts getting pulled earlier, the TD mob will go bananas.
  11. Nick, The Twitter post in your article about Lopez pitching into the 7th inning 11 times feels incomplete. Miami was absolutely dreadful last year. How much of Lopez pitching so deep was due to him being good or him just being better than the bullpen alternatives? Is there any data about how he did later in games relative to earlier and relative to the Miami bullpen? We know exactly why Twins SP did not go long, I am not sure we can say with conviction the same about Lopez.
  12. Baseball isn't baseball unless you pitch a complete game every third day... sorry 1920 Baseball isn't baseball unless you pitch a complete game every 4th day... sorry 1950 Baseball isn't baseball unless you pitch a complete game every 5th day... sorry 1990 Baseball isn't baseball unless your starter goes 7 innings... sorry 2010 The game changes and evolves. The goal for every manger should be to win. The goal for every pitcher is to do what they tell you to do in an effort to win. If that means you go 5 innings, you go 5 innings. SP pitchers want to pitch more innings because SP that pitch a lot of innings get paid more.
  13. I thought we had moved past the "Sonny Gray needs to pitch more innings" argument. Numbers don't lie. The third time through the lineup, Gray's ERA jumps from something like low 3's to over 10. Gray has pitched well the last few years because the Twins have protected him. Period. If you want to infer he is talking about the improved pitching staff around him, great. Getting 5 innings from your starters instead of 4 will make a huge difference. If Lopez is one of those guys that can be effective into the 7th, then fantastic.
  14. Injuries to Buxton, Polanco, and Kiriloff are not the things that worry me. Sure we are better with them healthy, but the Twins have done everything the could to mitigate the injury risk of those three by bringing in higher-floor backups. I am more concerned with Miranda, Gordon, Ryan, Ober. The risk of them regressing from last year is real. Put Maeda and Mahle on that list due to injury returns as well. (Love the depth all you want, but it is mainly unproven). If Miranda, Gordon, Ryan are able to repeat last year, Maeda and Mahle come back something close to their former selves, good things will happen. If not, it could collapse pretty quickly,
  15. My comments were not meant to be made as a reflection on your article, more a marketing ploy made by MLB and the owners. Owners will publicly make things look as dire as possible to either make themselves look like martyrs to the fans or poor to the players looking for more money. I do agree that based on relatively known information, such as media contracts, revenue sharing, ticket prices, and memorabilia sales, we have an idea on the where the Twins fit in the grand scheme of things (small market). But profitability is a whole different beast that is easy to manipulate
  16. This is all bookkeeping mumbo-jumbo. Do you really think a public entity is going to know the internal mechanisms of a private company? If the Dodgers and Yankees do not earn a net profit of at least $100m every year, I will eat my shoes.
  17. Stu, I have donated a couple of ACL's to the cause. Do they have some sort of tracking system in place to see where the ligaments ultimately get used? I would love to know if they were used in Kendry Morales' home plate or Brian Anderson's iron.
  18. Easy to critique in hindsight. If Polanco didn't have injury issues, he would probably be considered top five 2B in baseball right now. Mondesi was very young, what if he turned the corner? What if OHearn worked his way into becoming a better defender? What if Kubel didn't blow his knee out in the minors? We can do this all day. Bottom line is that teams make decisions based on skill, age, prospects, and money all the time. Some work, some don't.
  19. All of the comments here about Polanco's health is 100% conjecture. All we know about Polanco's injury is that it is his knee. That's it. Most players sign off on letting the public know what is going on, but HIPPA is still a real thing. How quickly the tides turn. Here is one of the most important Twins players of the last 5-7 years, everybody sees an injury and is ready to drop him without any knowledge of what is going on. Why am I not surprised...
  20. Adam, Shame on you. You should know better than to post an article portraying positivity. This is Twins Daily, the home of doom, gloom, and complaining about every which way the wind is blowing. This article should have been written by Randball Stu. Every body here knows the front office needs to be fired, the manager needs to be fired, every FA signing is bad, and everybody needs to be replaced by somebody in the minors. Shame on you for trying to be positive.
  21. I wonder if David Ortiz has learned how to bunt yet. He might be able to slide into that 1B role...
  22. Option #6 - Kiriloff does not look ready, the Twins make a trade for a 1B 1B appears to be a bit of a revolving door at the moment, Gallo, Solano, Miranda will all probably see some time there. Decent 1B are readily available throughout the league. The Twins make a move to solidify the position with a CJ Cron type player.
  23. You pretty much hit it on the head. We knew going into ST that, barring injury, there was very little question on the opening day roster. Basically everyone you mentioned is headed to AAA. I believe Magill is more of a lock to make the roster than you, but that is one man's opinion.
  24. Thank you for the honesty Doc. Considering how there were SO many people arguing against this signing, those voices have gone eerily quiet. I was for this signing since the beginning for the exact reasons we are seeing now: offensive potential, positional flexibility, great defense.
