  1. My answer comes down to whether the Twins actually intend to compete in 2022. If they don't sign or trade for at least three starters better than Bundy, then I wouldn't bother signing Simmons. Just let Gordon play there. Or Palacios. Don't really care, since we won't be winning games anyway. If the Twins signed Rodon, and traded for, say Manea, then sure, I'd bring back Simmons for 5m since the Twins are not going to overpay for Story. I think he's a good bounceback candidate, and he still gives you great defense at short. He never had elite speed or range. His great defense is predicated on that arm, and instincts, which don't go away. He's not nearly as bad with the stick as he was in 2021.
  2. As I understand it, the players proposal (that they are taking a hard line stance on) would create even more disparity by drastically reducing service time with each team. Players becoming free agents much earlier hurts teams like the Twins, Rays, A's, Pirates, etc. The owners are willing to pay players more during the ARB years, but that's not good enough for the players.
  3. All the veteran's committee and golden era committee picks are soft picks really. If Kaat is in, there's no way Johan Santana doesn't get in. Johan has more BWar despite pitching 3 eternities less than Kaat.
  4. Odo and Maeda had their best seasons with the Twins. Nobody has their best seasons with the Angels or Orioles. The Twins current FO has certainly done better with starting pitchers than the Angels or Orioles. That was my point. This FO was hired to develop pitchers, and we haven't really had enough time to figure out if they're doing that well or not. Certainly their FA signings have not worked well. I'd bet that Bundy is better with the Twins than he was with Baltimore or LAA though.
  5. I assume they're doing something. Then again, I assumed they were going to get someone to slot near or ahead of Berrios last year. Instead they signed Matt Shoemaker and JA Happ. I think they're throwing in the towel on 2022. Otherwise Stroman, Gausman, Ray or Verlander would be here.
  6. Yep. Needs 15 more WAR-three seasons of 5, or 5 seasons of 3. Not impossible. He put up 3.2 WAR last year. Just hit like Nelson Cruz and he will continue to play, even as DH.
  7. You could make that argument, but the Twins are on a different tier. Berrios, Odorizzi, and Maeda are better than any starters those two teams have developed in the recent past. Despite having a huge payroll, Ohtani was the Angels only decent starter last year and the only one who threw over 100 innings. Their recent "ace" is Andrew Heaney. The orioles have...John Means. They didn't get much out of Bundy, Gausman or Cobb. Cobb was really good with the Rays.
  8. If Sabato is with the Twins in 2025, Wallner should be too. Rooker and Sano will probably not be on the team.
  9. Right, give me the bottom guy. That's stroman, right? Much less volatility there. He won't win a Cy Young, but that sinker will play for years. Ray has strikeout stuff, but gives up lots of walks and homers.
  10. Personally, I'd pay more for Stroman than Robbie Ray. Stroman has had one bad year. Ray has had two good years and like 4-5 bad years.
  11. He's interesting too because he was an all star last year, then absolutely cratered in the second half. Not sure why. His stuff is good, and Maeda might seem like a good mentor. He might want to stay on the west coast though.
  12. Does Nick Gordon play short when Taylor plays CF then?
  13. Agreed, but I don't think Torii has either the high peak or overall counting stats to be in. Kenny Lofton has 68 WAR and is not in the HOF. Jim Edmonds-8 gold gloves, 393 HR's, 60 WAR, not in HOF. If Andruw Jones (62 WAR) and Jim Edmonds can't get in, Torii (50 WAR) has no chance.
  14. I'm curious what Story gets now, given that he is younger, capable of playing a good defensive SS, and has had more consistency. Has to be 200+. Correa will top 300 and Seager will top 250 unless they want shorter deals with higher AAV.
  15. Generally 60 WAR is the line. If under 60, you're looking for extra reasons to put that guy in. (postseason heroics? underrepresented position? Early injury/high peak guy?) Over 60, you're looking for reasons to NOT vote that guy in. (PED's, Schilling's politics, Pete Rose)
  16. Agreed, but Andruw Jones is the best defensive centerfielder ever (he also has 434 HR's) and doesn't look like he'll get voted in. If Jones doesn't get in, there's no road for Torii to get in. I'd vote yes on Jones, no on Torii.
  17. The fact that the MLB commissioner who purposely turned a blind eye to blatant PED use in MLB is in the HOF means the deserving players should probably not be penalized any more. At least, the players who didn't break MLB substance rules or fail a test for a substance they knew was banned.
  18. Isn't the case for PED's and Big Papi the same as it is for Sammy Sosa and PED's? Same NY Times article reporting the anonymous test. What I don't understand is voting for Ortiz but not voting for Sosa. It's not the corked bat thing. It's because one is likable and one isn't. "Likeability" should not put you in or out of the HOF, IMO. Maybe Ortiz doesn't get in but the consensus seems to be that he will waltz right in first or second ballot.
  19. If Wagner gets in, Nathan should. Nathan was easily the second best closer of his era, and the best closer was the first unanimous HOF selection in history. I don't think he gets voted in by the writers though. Like Johan Santana, he'll get in eventually but will be a veteran's committee selection.
  20. Twins fleeced TB in the Odorizzi trade and the Cruz trade.
  21. My point wasn't whether they're rebuilding or trying to contend, my point was that Chapman doesn't make sense with either option. Of course, the front office has said the team isn't rebuilding, and I will judge whether they are by what moves are made this offseason. You still have to play the games; I wouldn't have said the Giants or Mariners were contenders for 2020 but the Giants then went out and won 109 games and the Mariners almost made the playoffs.
  22. I like the return. The contract seems like a good value for TOR but I don't think Berrios signs that contract with the Twins, even if the Twins had offered. Of course, like everyone else, I assume/hope the FO chooses to spend the $ on another #2 starter.
  23. I don't see Chapman as an upgrade for 2022, nor do I see him as a long-term rebuild option, so I don't think this makes sense. If the Twins are going to try and contend in 2022, they need to keep Donaldson at 3rd, with days off at DH. His bat still plays.
  24. I didn't realize how good of a topic this was until pulling up their baseball reference pages. 55 WAR for Joe, 51 WAR for Puckett. Joe has 100 more games. Honestly, I was thinking the answer is Puckett before this debate, but I'm actually voting for Mauer now. I never saw Puck play. Too young.
  25. The numbers we're hearing probably aren't related at all to what is actually going on. I know Jim's group isn't cheap. They will pay to keep Buxton if Derek and Thad think it's worth it. I think Derek and Thad aren't sure that paying Buxton a 100million dollar guaranteed contract is a good idea. I'm not sure it's a good idea either.
