  1. These international signings always seem fraught with risk, even more so than the regular draft. But you gotta take some chances, right? Hopefully, some of these youngsters pan out and can contribute in the future.
  2. Good signing, and good value, but as others have also said, it doesn't dramatically improve the bullpen. We still need a couple of more outside arms in addition to pitchers from the farm and/or ex-starters.
  3. Interesting article, but perhaps a bit premature? Still a lot of off-season left, and I suspect the Twins may still swing a trade or two. Just too many pitchers challenging for spots in the starting rotation. They either are turned into relief pitchers, sent down to AAA (for those who still have options), or we trade them. Unless we want to start the season with a 6-man rotation. Hey, why not?
  4. A starter?! I think most of us were/are hoping for a good arm for the bullpen.
  5. He wouldn't make the top 5, or maybe not even the top 10, but Liriano had some darned good years with the Twins too. My personal pick would be Blyleven, but man, Santana was amazing for that stretch. And going back a few years, Jim Kaat was great too, plus he could hit!
  6. I'd be happy if the Twins signed IKF, but I think they will use the money on a relief pitcher, not that there is much of quality to sign at this point, but still.
  7. No idea who is better. Let them arm wrestle for the title! With Ober batting some injuries last season, that obviously made him less effective. SWR has looked very good at times, but seemingly can't pitch more than 5 innings in his starts. Both pitchers need to have strong seasons, but I'm not overly confident that will happen.
  8. And also too many starting pitchers. Unless we move Matthews and/or Festa to the bullpen, we still have a surplus of starters with Lopez, Ryan, Ober, and SWR, Plus Bradley and Abel that could/should be starting games in the majors. Then we have the Prielipp dilemma too, and guys like Klein waiting for a chance. For the first time in my memory, the Twins actually have a surplus of good arms in the rotation. So yeah, maybe they still move Ryan if they get a sweet deal. But that bullpen is nowhere near being ready to start the season.
  9. I was just kidding. I'm sure they would have loved to have him back again if he was willing to pitch.
  10. Seems like these international signings of mostly teenagers is very much a roll of the dice. Hopefully, a handful of these guys become legit prospects. That said, Ashwar Sprok is now my favorite name in baseball.
  11. Picking up the extra catcher wasn't that odd a transaction on the surface, but the relatively high money spent on 2-year contract puzzled me, especially knowing that this over-30 player is not going to be your starting catcher. As others have said, keeping Jeffers around after this season, or signing him to a long-term contract doesn't make a lot of sense, so I think they SHOULD try and trade him before the season starts, but only if we get some MLB ready arms in return. Right now, the whole front office strategy is puzzling.
  12. Wasn't Nick Gordon drafted as a shortstop too? Regardless, I'm with you: I wish they would take more chances on drafting pitchers. I realize it's risky strategy, but the rewards can be very high.
  13. I was wondering that Pereda's status was/is. He played well enough for the Twins after we picked him late in the season, but guess the front office doesn't see him as a legit backup catcher.
  14. But we couldn't talk him into pitching one more season?
  15. Good for him. He was one of those gamers that managed to stick around the majors for a few years, against all odds.
  16. Very good article, giving us some more insight into Josh Bell and how he approaches the game. He strikes me as one of those not-so-flashy veterans that can make a subtle but positive influence on the field and in the clubhouse. I'm happy that we signed him.
  17. I'm all for fast-tracking some of these young prospects, but in Quick's case, I think he needs at least a full year in the minors to make sure he is both healthy and effective. Hey, we all want success for these players ASAP, but I think we need to be patient in this case.
  18. I always liked Taylor, so I'm happy to read this news. I'm hopeful his experience will help some of our younger outfielders hone their fielding skills. Good move by the Twins!
  19. Staumont had a strange tenure with the Twins. If I remember correctly, he didn't give up a single earned run for the first 2 or 3 months of the season, then imploded and was released another month later. What iniitally looked like a great signing ended up being a train wreck.
  20. Yep, I can't see a player his age, with his declining mediocre stats, making a comeback after this.
  21. As usual, the few remaining quality relief pitchers are being signed by other teams and the Twins haven't made any moves of note, Spring training starts in one more month. I suppose we could obtain another arm in a trade, but I'm doubtful that will happen. We do have plenty of starters we can convert to the bullpen, but I'm not sure how effective that strategy will be. Meanwhile, we keep waiting ...
  22. So many catchers in so little time. And not much to show for it.
