  1. All of the above comments makes sense. You certainly can't blame ALL of the hitting woes on the coach. Nevertheless, I'm also surprised that Popkins was snapped up and hired so quickly after getting the boot from the Twins. But hey, good luck to him in Toronto.
  2. Not sure about any certain moments, but the lack of production from Royce Lewis (among many others) in the second half was a big negative. Injuries that kept Correa and Ryan out of the lineup also hurt us down the stretch. Just too many little things that added up to a lot.
  3. Almost sounds like a description of Mitch Garver ... who didn't even hit .200 last season.
  4. Hey, I've been a baseball fan since the late 1960s and I still have a very hard time getting my head around all these new stats too.
  5. Finding the "right" pieces for a bullpen almost seems like a game of throwing darts. Take Staumont, for example. He seemed lights out the first 2 months of the season, not even giving up an earned run, but there were obviously some peripheral stats that suggested he might not be so lights out after all, and sure enough, he quickly imploded and was duly released by mid-season. But hey, he performed well for a short time and it was worth the risk I suppose. I'm sure the Twins will sign similar reclamation projects over this coming off-season.
  6. I hope this isn't the only comment you will post. I think most of us appreciate a variety of comments and opinons (and ramblings especially!) about the Twins. Dobnak is a fascinating story and like many others, I hope he can still find a role with the Twins. I have no stats-based opinion on whether or not that will happen, but I can only hope he thrives in a role somewhere.
  7. I think Brooks Lee would have had more trade value last year.
  8. I agree with that strategy. He needs to play every day and not sit on the bench or bounce around the field as some sort of last resort backup. Stick him at one position, let him earn the promotion, and then bring him back up to the big leagues and see if he's the real thing or not. But as someone else suggested, he may end up in Nick Gordon territory.
  9. He has become a very useful member of the bullpen the past two years, so I can understand the reluctance to try him as a starter. But like Duran, you keep wondering ... what if? If he feels like he can handle the role, and he certainly seems to have the desire, give him a shot. If he trips and falls, you can always move him back to the bullpen and hope he becomes another Dennis Eckersley.
  10. Man, I'll settle for second best, and with fewer injuries.
  11. Ah man, this brings back memories. Gasser and Bumgarner were two of those "Can't Miss" prospects, that, as noted in the article, did indeed miss. The catcher Derek Parks was another hot prospect that fizzled out. I saw some of those guys play for AA Orlando Twins, including Willie Banks, and just assumed that would be playing in Minnesota in another year or two. But ah, this funny game, things don't always work out the way you, or me, or they, would hope.
  12. Ha! Good reminder, although I can barely remember him being on the team. When I think of speed, I recall the glory days of Otis Nixon!
  13. Those sorts of incorrect evaluations have certainly come back to haunt the Twins, are at least must give the front office a reason to wonder what they missed.
  14. Lots of good arms in our system nowadays, which is a refreshing change for the better. I like the idea of giving some of these young arms a chance, rather than going out and signing more guys like Jackson and Okert. Give the kids a shot!
  15. It's only mid-October and all the opinions and conjecture and projections about next season have already worn me out. I'm ready for basketball to clear my head. Maybe.
  16. A lot of people seem down on Martin. He seems like a work in progress, but I still think he can be an MLB regular. Where do you think is the best position for him?
  17. Castro may never make another All-Star team, but his versatility is HUGE for the Twins. I mean this guy is the ULTRA utility guy, and that is very valuable, even when he's not batting well. Even at his relatively higher salary I think he's still a bargain, and I doubt trading him would get the Twins anything close to reciprocal value. Keep him.
  18. That pretty much sums it up for me. If we are looking at some sort of rebuild or can't hope to compete next season, then trade him definitely. But otherwise, he's an asset to keep.
  19. Good point, Stewart and Topa are both potentially good pieces in the bullpen, but their injury histories put them in the unreliable/who-knows-what category.
  20. And that pretty much sums it up in regards to trading Jeffers. Who takes his place as starting catcher? Sure, we still have Vasquez but not sure how he will age and produce going forward if he starts most games, plus our minor league catching prospects that might contribute are underwhelming.
  21. Ah yes, I DO remember the Calvin Griffith days! Other than 1967, there were MANY painful years back in those days.
  22. I understand this sort of Tampa Bay model where you trade players before they enter free agency and try to capitalize on their value ... but I would be horrified if the Twins traded either Ryan or Ober this off-season. As Cory noted, Ryan's trade value is somewhat suppressed after his late season injury, so that alone would make it a bad move for the Twins. And yeah, Ober has ace potential and is still a bargain, so I can't see that happening either. I realize many people are shook up about the payroll limitations this coming season, but I don't think it's time to be off-loading our best players. Health permitting, we can still be a playoff team next season.
