  1. I'm still hoping that it doesn't take Tait that long to be ready for MLB.
  2. I'm all in favor of claiming players that might will a positional need or have some sort of reclamation value, but I honestly don't see any reason why the Twins claimed this guy and put him on the 40-man roster. Most puzzling move.
  3. My mistake, I should have said "Major League" managing experience. And you are right, his minor league managing experience certainly is a plus and helps his case.
  4. If he appears healthy, keep him around. We certainly need more good arms in the bullpen and he's shown that when healthy, he can be productive. The money aspect doesn't seem unsurmountable, but then again, with our current ownership enigma, who knows what is deemed "affordable" or not.
  5. Yeah, I'm certainly not dead-set against the idea of converting an outfielder, or catcher, to first base. Hey, Joe Mauer ended up doing a very good job! But I just don't see Wallner or Larnach, or even Jeffers, being a good fit at first base.
  6. I liked Polanco as a Twin and am totally thrilled with how he is playing for Seattle in the post-season. But I don't shed any tears over that trade at all. Polanco had an injury history, and we had players to replace him, and I think the Twins did well to get as much as they did for him in that trade. DeScalfani MIGHT have been a good piece for the rotation, but injuries quickly nixed that idea, as they did for Topa in the bullpen for the most part. But then again, Polanco struggled last season and didn't look like his old self. Not much for either team to cheer about. This year is different, obviously, but you also have to factor in that Seattle had to re-sign Polanco in order for him to have his bounce-back season. And then the Twins are suddenly looking like they have a possibly MLB starter with Gonzalez. You make trades, you take risks. All in all, not a bad deal for the Twins. Let's check back a year from now and see how these players are doing.
  7. Seems like a qualified candidate that may end up being a terrific manager. You never know until he gets the chance. But he no doubt fits the Twins preference to hire a guy that's never managed before and one they can sign without paying a ton of money.
  8. I think using Prielipp in the bullpen this coming season is a good idea, even though I still hope he can a full-time starter. I have no idea how much "buildup" is required for a player like him that is coming back from injuries, but as you noted, he's almost 25 and it may be time to find out what we've got with him.
  9. All this post-season Twins drama; Varland pitching to Polanco ... and another home run!
  10. Big thumbs down to any idea of converting Wallner or Larnach to first base. Why does first base so often end up being the dumping ground for mediocre outfielders? C'mon, we can do better, or at least make a real attempt. No more in-house options in this case. We need to either trade for a first baseman that knows how to field the position (highly unlikely the Twins will do this) or sign another free agent, most likely another one-year rental.
  11. Very good article, one of the best ones that I have read so far in this post-season. This part was especially apt: And while Ryan is a hell of a pitcher who would hurt to lose, I do think the team and rotation could theoretically survive his subtraction and still hold their own next year. Right now we have more quality depth in the starting rotation than I can recall us having in ... many years ... ever? Honestly, there are a lot of good to great arms that we can put in the rotation and feel fairly confident. If we have to trade one arm, I think Ryan will give us the biggest return. Let's do it. But by all means, keep Pablo for a few more years.
  12. Is this even a real question? We desperately need more effective relief pitchers, and Sands is actually pretty darn good, so sure we keep him. I hope the brass aren't thinking of trading him too!
  13. They are not and WERE not. Please tell me that we aren't thinking about bringing either one of those guys back again!
  14. Who cares, As good as Buxton played this season, any MVP votes are not even worth worrying about at this point. It was wonderful that he stayed healthy all year, but it certainly had no impact on how the Twins finished.
  15. That's true, but this off-season there are already several manager openings, more than usual it seems, and I don't think the Twins will be rushing to sign the first quality candidate. Their tendency always seems to be to play the waiting game. Too many other teams are more attractive landing spots or they will offer more money. We will end up with a less high-profile name, but that may not be such a bad thing in the end.
  16. I haven't noticed Castro's name in any of the Cubs box scores with the Brewers. Is he injured or just not being used?
  17. Were Funderburk pitching in front of a better defense, he'd probably have put up even better numbers this season. True, but then again. ALL of our pitchers could have benefited from a better defense.
  18. Good examples. I still think that Nowlin could turn into a useful bullpen arm ... but as you noted, he needs to find that consistency.
  19. Any Yankees misery thrills me!
  20. Tonkin certainly doesn't inspire most of us, but as someone noted, he does have a "rubber arm" and can at least eat some innings. Can we do better? Of course. But I still have no idea if the front office will be dipping into the free agent pool, or able to do so, or not. I recall that when we lost Thielbar last winter, there wasn't much regret, but he had a very good season with the Cubs. No idea how some of these ageing relief pitcher will do, so I won't be horrified if we bring Tonkin back. But I'd sure like to give first dibs to some of the younger prospects in the system.
  21. I have this sinking feeling that the search for a new Twins manager will mirror the front office strategy in signing free agents each winter: wait until the very last minute and sign the cheapest guy still available.
  22. You are right; the Twins certainly do allow their managers a few years to re-shape the team, or whatever the goal is at that juncture. But I'm not sure that the front office has been "pretty clear" about not wanting to win the next couple of years. At least I hope that's not their strategy at this point.
  23. Tough outing for Varland, giving up both homers. Get 'em next time, kid!
  24. We gave Cabrera a fair shot, he didn't perform well, he's in his late 20s and no longer an intriguing young prospect with a live arm. No need to keep him around. Next scrapheap pitcher in line, step up!
  25. Agreed. If they seriously consider a more radical rebuild, Larnach needs to be dealt also.
