    What a joy to see the Twins win the season opener. Congrats to Rocco and his team! I didn't see the game but I was wondering about Polanco at shortstop. I know there a bit of uncertainty in the past week as to whether he'd be healthy enough to start. I know he didn't have a hit (one of several Twins who zeroed out today) but how did he look today overall?

    I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but my first thought after reading the headline for this article was: What are Twins doing now? Are they doing another Pat Dean and bringing back another marginal pitcher like A.J. Achter? And then I saw the part about him being a college coach. Whew!

    Baffling hitters is a highly desirable quality! I sure hope he can continue to do that during this season. So far this Harper story has been remarkable ... and fun.

    Schoop put up good spring numbers but didn't seem to catch much buzz in the press or on this site. Maybe that's a good thing. Sneak up and surprise everyone. I hope he continues with the hot bat and puts up impressive numbers similar to 2017. This might end up being the best signing the team made all winter.

    I know it's only spring training, and he hasn't had that many at-bats compared to other players, but I'll feel a lot better (oh, that pulse rate!) when Gonzalez starts getting some consistent hits.

    Agreed: great article. I am especially intrigued by this bunch of no-name guys showing good stuff in the bullpen: Harper, Morin, Guilmet, Nicolino. I'd much prefer to see a couple of them go north with the team instead of guys like Reed or Magill.

    Everything that I've read about what Perez is doing this spring, and what has been suggested that he do, sounds very encouraging. Let's hope the early positive results continue and flourish during the regular season. Count me as a believer.

    I agree! Give that man a raise (in this case, Parker). And good to hear that Garver is a quick learner and excited about this stuff too.

    Gotta agree with the kudos on this article, Seth, Very informative stuff about these players, most of which I did not know, Obviously, not enough room on the team for all these guys right (barring some freakish injuries), but they are proving they belong in the majors, and I wish them all the best of luck.

    Other than the bullpen it looks the toughest decision will be who to keep at first base, as the starter and/or a backup. Cron, Austin and Duda have all hit well this spring. I would assume Cron has the job to lose, but might one of these other guys make the team too?

    People keep pointing to his lack of velocity as a red flag, but for a savvy veteran pitcher who can still get people out, that shouldn't be a huge concern. I'd be more worried about a multi-year deal that ends up costing the team a bunch of money. Even a 1-year deal seems like a gamble for the sort of money he wants. What about a much cheaper option, someone like Edwin Jackson, who had a nice bounce-back year with Oakland in 2018?

    I'm not sure either, KC will obviously need better starting catcher options with Perez now injured, but they are going to be cellar dwellers this year no matter what they do, and it's doubtful they would give up much for a player like Castro.

    Savvy move by the front office. As others have already noted, there just wasn't room for Granite in this year's Twins outfield, so getting anything at all for him was a bonus. Good luck to him. It would be fun to both Granite and Ben Revere make the Rangers opening day roster.

    Good pick. Kubel was on an upward path until that injury. He was really never the same afterwards.

    Bring back Nick Punto! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously though, I hope Sano is healthy and ready for a full, productive season. And I think that will happen. But if all else fails I'm confident enough with a mix of Gonzalez, Adrianza, and/or Astudillo being able to handle the hot corner.

    I'm not sure this qualifies as some sort of breaking news ... or even important news. Not to make light of the team's decision. Obviously, Berrios deserves to be named the opening game starter. Kudos to the kid. But what was the purpose of announcing this decision the first week in March? What's the urgency? I'm baffled. The only thing I can figure is that the team wants to make sure that Berrios knows that he's important to them, and ... ahem ... maybe we can get that contract extension settled this month while we're at it. Otherwise, not really a surprising or earth-shaking announcement.

    Another guy that's already been used in the bullpen a couple of times in the past week is Justin Nicolino, who pitched for the Marlins last year. Don't know much about him. Anyone out there seen him pitch? What are his strengths? Does he stand a chance of making the Twins' opening day roster?

    That's what I had assumed too, which was why I was surprised to see Gonzalez listed as the primary backup option at first in this article. Not to say that would be a bad thing, but I was just puzzled by that choice.

    As a baseball traditionalist, I hate the idea of using a pitch clock. But I also have to be a realist and I think it may become a permanent part of the game in the not too distant future. The times they are a-changing (apologies to Mr. Dylan) and I think if baseball wants to include a younger demographic as fans (those with shorter attention spans!), then they are going to have to make this and a few other changes to shorten the length of the games. Sigh. I don't want that to happen, but I just think it's inevitable.

    I agree with Birdwatcher; that was a very good interview, Seth! Interesting to read more about Jeffers and his mindset. I'm excited to have him in the organization. I hope he adjusts and makes quick strides and can join the big league team in the near future. It will be nice to have options like him and Rortvedt behind the plate in a few more years.

    Everything I've read about Marwin Gonzalez focuses on his versatility, but how much first base has he actually played the past two years? In my hazy recollection, he was always more of an outfielder that could also play the infield without embarrassing himself. But what's his glove like at first?

    I have to say that I feel a bit "ho hum" about this signing too. I don't hate it, and look forward to seeing what Gonzalez can add to the team. Looking at his versatility and production the past two years, it seems like a solid move by the Twins. But I still wish they had used the money for a starting pitcher or another strong arm to add to the bullpen.
