  1. Count me as one of those who don't think Kepler has reached his potential yet. And with that in mind, I don't think what we'd get for him in a trade would be nearly enough to satisfy the team or the fans. Imagine another Aaron Hicks type trade. Ugh ... no thanks. Let's keep him for now.
  2. I'll be curious to see how Stewart "develops" in the next year or so. I thought Ted's use of stats to show how much more effective he was when he didn't start a game was an eyebrow raiser. Hmm ... maybe the bullpen MAY be his best landing spot.
  3. Yeah, I can relate to the frustration. A 1 year deal certainly doesn't give the team much to plan with. But I see this more of a gap year move, waiting to see if Gordon can get it together by 2020.
  4. Hopefully, Castro comes back and is healthy and can at least hit his weight. Not sure where this will leave Garver in the team's plans. The concussion issue certainly is a big concern. I like Astudillo, but more as a utility guy rather than someone who can be a reliable starter. Then again, why not give him a chance too? Or maybe we need to look beyond Plan B and opt for a Plan C or D.
  5. Your assessment of Schoop is probably accurate, And as much as I was happy to see Dozier get traded to another team, having him back for another year wouldn't be the worst scenario. As you noted, he's most likely put up better numbers than Schoop and most of the players are already familiar with his style of play. So many potential second base targets this year, I'm not sure what the best move would be?
  6. I have high hopes but low expectations for the Twins in 2019. Unless they can sign a very good starting pitcher and/or rebuild the bullpen into something dominant, I just don't see them contending.
  7. I also think Schoop is an intriguing "bounce back" candidate to fill our second base vacancy, and one with some power too. I also think Matt Bush could be a good bullpen addition, and even a healthy Shelby Miller might be someone to look at. But those guys the White Sox are getting rid of ... not that interested.
  8. Zero interest in any trade that involves Cano. He's an over-the-hill and overrated "all star," and now one with questionable baggage. I hope the Twins aren't even thinking about trades like that, even if it brings us another phenom closer.
  9. Gotta defend Mickey! Well sure, Hatcher was a bit of a goofball, but a talented one. Maybe not gold glove caliber in the outfield, but that guy could always hit. Plus, he was a vital piece for the Dodgers the following year in 1988, and his homers helped them win the World Series.
  10. I think, more than any other position on a team, pitchers are the most prone to be unpredictable in regards to their performance. So many things can go amiss, so it's always a gamble. That's one reason I hate the idea of signing any pitcher, starter or reliever, to a lengthy contract. As far as Reed goes, I just shrug my shoulders and think of an appropriate song lyric to quote.
  11. And thank YOU for writing the report, Steve. Very informative to read about what the Twins' prospects did in the AFL this year.
  12. Yeah, I would think/hope that Kiriloff and Lewis are pretty much untouchable trade pieces at this point. As nice as it would be to get a player like Goldschmidt, I hope the Twins don't consider trading their top prospects for him.
  13. Long-time Twin? He was more of a "blink and you missed him Twin" !!!
  14. Just gotta say I love that word "bupkiss" that you used. That made me smile. Thank you!
  15. Unfortunately, I think the sad reality in these turbulent modern times is that some sort of security is needed, even at ball games. But as you noted, most all of what is being done certainly is useless and ineffective.
  16. I'm probably in the minority on this board, but I think that going after aging sluggers like Nelson Cruz and Carlos Santana would be a mistake, or at least not worth the money. But I lower tier hitter, and a younger one, like Matt Adams would be fine.
  17. The free agent market for starting pitchers is such a luck of the draw, especially diving into these bargain bins. Last year I thought guys like Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner would have been good picks, only to see them both have horrible years. Shows what I know! Then again, I also thought Edwin Jackson would be worth a shot, and he ended up being a crucial piece of the A's rotation. As for this year's list, there isn't a one the remotely excites me.
  18. I especially like the pick of Tony Diaz as third base coach. Very wise decision to get a Spanish-speaking coach involved at the MLB level. And the guy even wrote a book that gave English language advice to Latin players. Good move!
  19. My first reaction was ... huh? Never heard of the guy before, but reading everything about him, it sounds like a very canny move by the front office, one of those unconventional choices that could turn out to be a real gem.
  20. I'm guessing too, but I think your hunch is probably accurate. But I also think the front office has more input and final say in these decisions than we would think, especially seeing as how Baldelli himself is a new hire with no previous managing experience.
  21. The more I read about Griffin Jax the more excited I am about seeing him in a Twins uniform. Hope he continues to show progress!
  22. Like many others on this board I'm still very high on Thorpe too. But one thing that Tom wrote made me surprised. He wrote: A lot of scouts also believe Thorpe will end up in the bullpen. Are there really a LOT of scouts who think this? I'm certainly not privy to what the scouting community thinks of Thorpe or any other pitcher, but this is the first time that I can recall someone mentioning that Thorpe might end up in the bullpen. What do others think?
  23. I also think it would take more than Cave and Gonsalves to acquire Iglesias. Honestly, I just don't think the Twins have that many desirable trade pieces right now, unless you want to get rid of the recent high draft picks that we have in the lower minors. Best strategy at this juncture would be to fork out some money for a handful of quality free agents.
  24. My take on this idea is that Buxton, despite his setbacks last year, still has MUCH more trade value than Kepler. That said, I'd hang on to both of them at this point.
  25. Well, you know it's a slow week when a move like this one gets so many comments! But honestly, I like this waiver claim. Seems like a low risk move with plenty of potential upside. Like many posters here, I had never heard of Michael Reed before but I am intrigued by the numbers he put up in recent years. Might he turn into another pleasant keeper like Jake Cave?
