  1. I'm probably in the minority on this board, but I think that going after aging sluggers like Nelson Cruz and Carlos Santana would be a mistake, or at least not worth the money. But I lower tier hitter, and a younger one, like Matt Adams would be fine.
  2. The free agent market for starting pitchers is such a luck of the draw, especially diving into these bargain bins. Last year I thought guys like Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner would have been good picks, only to see them both have horrible years. Shows what I know! Then again, I also thought Edwin Jackson would be worth a shot, and he ended up being a crucial piece of the A's rotation. As for this year's list, there isn't a one the remotely excites me.
  3. I especially like the pick of Tony Diaz as third base coach. Very wise decision to get a Spanish-speaking coach involved at the MLB level. And the guy even wrote a book that gave English language advice to Latin players. Good move!
  4. My first reaction was ... huh? Never heard of the guy before, but reading everything about him, it sounds like a very canny move by the front office, one of those unconventional choices that could turn out to be a real gem.
  5. I'm guessing too, but I think your hunch is probably accurate. But I also think the front office has more input and final say in these decisions than we would think, especially seeing as how Baldelli himself is a new hire with no previous managing experience.
  6. The more I read about Griffin Jax the more excited I am about seeing him in a Twins uniform. Hope he continues to show progress!
  7. Like many others on this board I'm still very high on Thorpe too. But one thing that Tom wrote made me surprised. He wrote: A lot of scouts also believe Thorpe will end up in the bullpen. Are there really a LOT of scouts who think this? I'm certainly not privy to what the scouting community thinks of Thorpe or any other pitcher, but this is the first time that I can recall someone mentioning that Thorpe might end up in the bullpen. What do others think?
  8. I also think it would take more than Cave and Gonsalves to acquire Iglesias. Honestly, I just don't think the Twins have that many desirable trade pieces right now, unless you want to get rid of the recent high draft picks that we have in the lower minors. Best strategy at this juncture would be to fork out some money for a handful of quality free agents.
  9. My take on this idea is that Buxton, despite his setbacks last year, still has MUCH more trade value than Kepler. That said, I'd hang on to both of them at this point.
  10. Well, you know it's a slow week when a move like this one gets so many comments! But honestly, I like this waiver claim. Seems like a low risk move with plenty of potential upside. Like many posters here, I had never heard of Michael Reed before but I am intrigued by the numbers he put up in recent years. Might he turn into another pleasant keeper like Jake Cave?
  11. I wonder if Tyler Jay would even be up for consideration if he hadn't have been a first round draft pick a few years back. Doesn't seem like he's earned his way onto the 40-man roster otherwise.
  12. I'd just take 1 one more year at this point. I know many on this board are hoping that he has played his last game as a Twin (or for any team for that matter) but I think he still can be a productive player, as long as he still has the desire to put on a uniform and play. No, he won't start 162 games at this point, but I still think he's the best 1B option we have amidst all the other suspect players we are looking at next year.
  13. I honestly don't see the love for Nelson Cruz, Sure, he's been remarkably productive for Seattle since they signed him as a free agent (after a good tenure in Texas), but he's going to turn 39 next year. How certain are you that he can still put up good numbers, if even start on a regular basis?
  14. Good point. In this day and age, with so many Latin American players, the ability to speak Spanish is becoming a more important consideration.
  15. At this point even a coach who is remotely fluent in Spanish will be a plus.
  16. That was the first thing I thought about after hearing the news. Who will stay and who will go? And who will Rocco want to bring on board?
  17. Seth, you wrote: or could you consider a candidate who wasn’t good in his first manager job I'd answer a hearty "yes" to that one. There have been plenty of "good" managers that failed miserably in their first time at the job. Terry Francona comes immediately to mind. He was a bust when he managed the Phillies back in the day, but suddenly turned into a "genius" when he managed the Red Sox and Indians. That aside, I don't think we necessarily need someone with MLB managing experience. Take a chance on one of these new faces and try something different.
  18. Good article. Both Milwaukee and Oakland had successful seasons even with starting pitching woes (plenty of injuries on both teams). But both had great bullpens and Milwaukee especially acquired some quality pieces via trades and free agency. Hey, it's always a bit of dice roll, and I give credit to those teams for making the right moves. But can the Twins do likewise? Gotta say I'm less than confident right now.
  19. That comment makes me think of Delmon Young ... and not in a good way.
  20. No mention of Nick Punto? Hey, think of all of those other utility infielders that turned into good managers (Ron Washington, Renteria, Alex Cora, and Gardenhire come to mind) and maybe it isn't such a crazy idea.
  21. I agree, Instead of shelling out big money for a "proven" reliever, I'd prefer they seek some of those "live arms" that could turn into valuable bullpen pieces. Much more cost effective, and will possibly produce better overall results.
  22. Great writeup! Watching those Astudillo highlights has made my weekend much more tolerable (I manage a retail store and those days can take their toll on my mood!). Thank you!
  23. I have to admit not knowing a great deal about these guys, so your article was very informative. That said, none of them do much to excite me.
  24. Meulens has many pluses in my opinion. The Twins could do much worse in choosing a qualified candidate and one who could potentially help to ignite this team.
