  1. For the sake of their locker room dining table, I hope they didn't grab Paul Prudhomme too!
  2. I gotta agree with your mindset. I used to get really worked up about which Twin (or in good years, Twins plural) "deserved" to be on the All-Star team each year.. But in recent years I just don't care that much any longer. A good percentage of the choices are totally undeserved, so why worry about it. Sure, it will be nice to see a handful of Twins get picked, but ultimately, I don't care either way. Let's focus on the playoffs!
  3. Great story! Congrats to Smeltzer on a fantastic almost storybook-like debut (getting a win would have been sweet, but hey, you can't have it all!). But Buxton bouncing off the outfield wall again causes my heart to skip a beat. I DON'T want to see him injured again.
  4. I haven't heard LaTroy speak on air but I love your reference to Amelia Bedelia and those "I Can Read!" books. We still sell those at my bookshop!
  5. Good thing we were able to trade Dozier when we did and get a couple of decent prospects. With his poor play so far this year, I doubt he'd fetch much of anything at all at this point.
  6. Yes, the bullpen overuse can become a big problem quickly. But don't forget Harper and Parker and are also looking good, plus we should a couple of guys back from the IL soon too. And Meija is bound to improve, right? I wouldn't have said this in spring training, but at this point I have faith in this bullpen.
  7. After all the anxiety and lack of confidence in our bullpen, I detect more positive signs lately. Might the bullpen even be one of the team's strengths by year's end?
  8. I'm really encouraged by the way that Pineda has pitched so far. What a nice addition to the starting rotation! But ... the concern is how durable he will be this year after his long post-injury layoff. This has probably been mentioned by someone already, and if so I apologize, but do the Twins have Pineda on any sort of pitch or innings limit this season?
  9. That was the first thing I thought about when I saw the insane number of home runs in that game: are they using a juiced ball in that league?
  10. I understand the concerns with the Twins pitching but I think it's way too soon to panic or to start tossing around trade ideas or even free agent signings. It's only April 12, plus as someone mentioned already, the weather's been pretty frigid overall. Let's wait another month and stretch these guys out more and see how the dust settles. I think we have enough in-house options to sustain us for now. Not saying that we necessarily have a playoff-caliber staff, but I see enough encouraging signs (Pineda especially) that I'm not ready to worry too much at this point.
  11. Royce Lewis helped to get things going in the first inning. With one out, he walked and then stole second, which one was of two steals on the day. Yeah! in this high-tech era of advanced metrics or stats or whatever is being used to evaluate players nowadays, I still love seeing players like Lewis steal bases. Exciting baseball!
  12. Yeah, not a good first start for Thorpe. I sure hope there are no injury concerns.
  13. And then there is the forgotten man. Don't the Twins still have a player on the roster named Miguel Sano? But does anyone really care at this point?
  14. Gotta say I'm torn on this issue. Or conflicted. Whatever the case. I love the fact that Buxton is aggressive and plays with flair and energy ... but I'm still concerned about the reckless stuff, the banging into walls without factoring in the consequences. Not sure if it's a judgement problem or just the way he wants to play the game. His style of play aside, I also endorse this idea of more padding on the walls. Why risk a player's career when a relatively simple fix will reduce such risks?
  15. I agree, Heads up plays, good instincts, he doesn't strike out, he hustles. Sure, he doesn't have the "track record" of the more established players, but I hope that Rocco finds ways to get him in the lineup as often as possible. Can't argue with the results so far, plus we all know he's a joy to watch play. More please!
  16. What a joy to see the Twins win the season opener. Congrats to Rocco and his team! I didn't see the game but I was wondering about Polanco at shortstop. I know there a bit of uncertainty in the past week as to whether he'd be healthy enough to start. I know he didn't have a hit (one of several Twins who zeroed out today) but how did he look today overall?
  17. I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but my first thought after reading the headline for this article was: What are Twins doing now? Are they doing another Pat Dean and bringing back another marginal pitcher like A.J. Achter? And then I saw the part about him being a college coach. Whew!
  18. Baffling hitters is a highly desirable quality! I sure hope he can continue to do that during this season. So far this Harper story has been remarkable ... and fun.
  19. Schoop put up good spring numbers but didn't seem to catch much buzz in the press or on this site. Maybe that's a good thing. Sneak up and surprise everyone. I hope he continues with the hot bat and puts up impressive numbers similar to 2017. This might end up being the best signing the team made all winter.
  20. I know it's only spring training, and he hasn't had that many at-bats compared to other players, but I'll feel a lot better (oh, that pulse rate!) when Gonzalez starts getting some consistent hits.
  21. Agreed: great article. I am especially intrigued by this bunch of no-name guys showing good stuff in the bullpen: Harper, Morin, Guilmet, Nicolino. I'd much prefer to see a couple of them go north with the team instead of guys like Reed or Magill.
  22. Everything that I've read about what Perez is doing this spring, and what has been suggested that he do, sounds very encouraging. Let's hope the early positive results continue and flourish during the regular season. Count me as a believer.
