    Thinking about Johan Santana and his great but abbreviated career, I think he warrants consideration for this hall. But then you'd have to also think about once great players like Dale Murphy and Andruw Jones who flamed out at a relatively early age. Again, I'm not saying they deserve to be in the Hall, maybe they do, but it's worth discussion,

    You both make good points. At some point we need to be honest with ourselves and realize that each generation of players were doing things to "enhance" their performance, whether it was popping pills, using steroids, throwing spitballs, or scuffing the ball. That's just been part of this game for as long as I can remember. Not saying that's a good thing or that I'm comfortable with it, but it's a reality.

    I don't think Rose is ever going to make it ... at least not in his lifetime. I think most of the writers would rather pick a Bonds or Clemens than Rose.

    I remain a big believer in Thorpe too. I've never seen him pitch but everything I read about him causes me to take notice. I'm hoping he will make his MLB debut with the Twins this coming season. Yeah, that may be wishful thinking, but I think he has the tools and the confidence to make an impact ASAP.

    One position that I'm worried about in the near future is catcher. What's the verdict on our catching prospects in the minors? In addition to being able to hit, which catcher has the best tools? Good arm, pitch framing, the usual arsenal of stuff.

    Yeah, what the A's did last year to bolster their starting pitching worked out VERY well. It would be nice for the Twins to pick up at least another "comeback" type started in addition to some extra arms for the bullpen. But back to Cruz, as I noted in another post, I'm less than enthusiastic about the signing. But one thing that I do agree with is that it sends a strong message to the fans --- not to mention the rest of the team --- that the front office intends to compete this year. And that's a very good thing.

    Back to the original article, it was noted that the Twins 40-man roster was already full. This signing will put it at 41. So who is the odd man out?

    Well, I'm obviously in the minority but I'm not that joyous about this deal. Not sure what to make of the fact that signing a 38-year old DH-only player --- and one that already has a PED suspension in his career --- for "only" 14 million dollars is construed as a bargain. Hey, I hope I'm proved wrong, but I have my doubts that Cruz will be making an all-star team this coming season. Then again, I like the comparison someone made to the Thome signing a few years ago. Let's hope Cruz is remotely as productive.

    I'm starting to wonder if there is going to be any actual pursuit or not. Sigh, I'm beyond bored already. At this point the signing of any warm body with a working arm will be exciting news.

    Add me to the list of those who think that Rortvedt might be a real sleeper and make great strides this year. I'm also still high on Lewis Thorpe. Will be exciting to watch the progress of these and other prospects this coming season.

    And I agree with that agreement. As much as I'd like another quality starter in the rotation, I think the best bet for the money would be signing a reliever ... or two.

    I used to eagerly follow the Rule 5 draft, hoping the Twins could snag another Santana-like sleeper. But, after reading other posts about the way rosters are now constructed, I'm not so keen on the idea any longer. And even if we lose guys like Jay and/or Diaz, I won't be too crushed.

    Just think, a year ago we were all debating the merits --- or lack thereof -- of Morrison and Vargas at first base and DH. Frankly, I'm not sure if the outlook for this coming season represents progress or not.

    Honestly, I have no problems at all with Adrianza being on the roster as a backup infielder. Good glove and he's hit much better than advertised.. My bigger concern at this point is improving the pitching staff.

    I also like the idea of signing Soria. His injury history is a bit of a worry, but if he's healthy and in shape he can also be a valuable arm in the bullpen.

    Count me as one of those who don't think Kepler has reached his potential yet. And with that in mind, I don't think what we'd get for him in a trade would be nearly enough to satisfy the team or the fans. Imagine another Aaron Hicks type trade. Ugh ... no thanks. Let's keep him for now.

    I'll be curious to see how Stewart "develops" in the next year or so. I thought Ted's use of stats to show how much more effective he was when he didn't start a game was an eyebrow raiser. Hmm ... maybe the bullpen MAY be his best landing spot.

    Yeah, I can relate to the frustration. A 1 year deal certainly doesn't give the team much to plan with. But I see this more of a gap year move, waiting to see if Gordon can get it together by 2020.

    Hopefully, Castro comes back and is healthy and can at least hit his weight. Not sure where this will leave Garver in the team's plans. The concussion issue certainly is a big concern. I like Astudillo, but more as a utility guy rather than someone who can be a reliable starter. Then again, why not give him a chance too? Or maybe we need to look beyond Plan B and opt for a Plan C or D.

    Your assessment of Schoop is probably accurate, And as much as I was happy to see Dozier get traded to another team, having him back for another year wouldn't be the worst scenario. As you noted, he's most likely put up better numbers than Schoop and most of the players are already familiar with his style of play. So many potential second base targets this year, I'm not sure what the best move would be?

    I have high hopes but low expectations for the Twins in 2019. Unless they can sign a very good starting pitcher and/or rebuild the bullpen into something dominant, I just don't see them contending.

    I also think Schoop is an intriguing "bounce back" candidate to fill our second base vacancy, and one with some power too. I also think Matt Bush could be a good bullpen addition, and even a healthy Shelby Miller might be someone to look at. But those guys the White Sox are getting rid of ... not that interested.

    Zero interest in any trade that involves Cano. He's an over-the-hill and overrated "all star," and now one with questionable baggage. I hope the Twins aren't even thinking about trades like that, even if it brings us another phenom closer.
