    After a 7 for 77 (.091) start to the season and being sent down to the minors, the White Sox recalled Daniel Palka and he responded with 2 homers yesterday ... and against Cleveland. Thank you! His batting average now a robust .113.

    Noticeably absent are the couple of Japanese and Korean free agent signings in recent years. Yes they were definite busts, but it was always worth a try.

    Down the stretch and relying on names like Randy Dobnak and Devin Smeltzer and Cody Stashak to fortify the pitching staff .. how unlikely but totally fun is that?!

    Most likely they reached out to Oswaldo Arcia and Darin Mastroianni before calling LaMarre. man, what a bizarre last month this is going to be!

    I always feel sad when the minor league season ends. Too soon indeed! But at least this year we have the Twins in the major league playoffs (knock on wood) to either enjoy or suffer through.

    But in all seriousness, I'd be shocked if the Twins forked out money for any of the free agent pitchers you listed. I think we absolutely need a top flight arm in the rotation, but I don't see it happening via free agency this coming season.

    We could also pick up Kevin Slowey and Phil Humber on the cheap.

    Yes, they need better pitchers, specifically another VERY GOOD starter or two, but I can't see that happening given the Twins' history of lackluster free agent signings. More than likely we're looking at another winter of "the ones that got away." That said, I'd give Odo the QO, but Pineda would be my priority signing.

    I agree; good list. You could easily point to a dozen or more players on the team who have surpassed expectations this year. One of the most pleasant surprises, one that not many people mention, has been Adrianza. He's currently batting .287 (which is down from a week ago) and his OBP is .371. Who guessed that he was even capable of putting up those kind of numbers. especially considering how cold he was the first month of the season. Sano, Garver, Cruz; Duffy; all these guys have performed much better than i had thought they would.

    Brusdar Graterol? Yes, by all means bring him up. But forget September. Either call him up this next week so he's eligible for the post-season or don't even bother. At this point I'd also consider giving him starts too, unless the rest of the starters turn it around and start putting up blanks.

    I hope the strong game by Perez is the start of MORE quality starts by the Twins. That starting rotation has been looking ugly lately, so it was refreshing to see a strong start again. And nice games by the forgotten guys, Schoop and Cron too. Now we just have to forget this win came against a weak Tigers team.

    I'd forgotten all about Florimon. He played well for the Phillies at a variety of positions the past couple of years before getting injured. He had a decent spring training with the Braves but has yet to be called up this year.

    The Phillies are enamored with ex-Twins lately. First they picked up Morin and Blake Parker, and now Morrison. Hardly seems like savvy moves for a team fighting for the playoffs.

    You could certainly say that Cave was struggling earlier in the year, but lately he's been hitting very well. In his 19 AB so far in August he is batting .421. Not bad at all!

    I realize this is a bit premature, but would it be far-fetched to start thinking of Nelson Cruz as an MVP candidate? I was perhaps one of the few on this board who was not that crazy about the Twins signing him over the winter, but my skepticism has turned to admiration. This guy has been amazing this year! 39 years old, or any age, he is putting up some very impressive stats. Maybe he won't be having more 3-homer games, but can he continue playing this well down the stretch?

    Meanwhile, Danny Santana keeps playing surprisingly well for Texas, If anything, his stats have gotten better in the past month.He homered again yesterday (his 17th of the year) and now is batting .325 with 49 RBI. Pretty darn impressive. He's also been pretty versatile, playing outfield and infield, with another stint at 1st base yesterday.

    The newly improved bullpen? Well, at least Romo has looked good so far. Count me as one that's still a bit nervous about the effectiveness and stability of this bullpen.

    The Twins are having an historic year offensively. Very, very impressive. They could, and should, win the division. But beyond that? I fear we won't get past the first round of the playoffs once again. I just don't think we have the pitching quality (starters or relievers) to compete with the top shelf teams. Sign. Same old story.

    I like the addition of Dyson to the bullpen ... but not convinced that that getting him and Romo was enough to make the pen a top notch one that is going to get us far in the playoffs. But hey, at least it's something and things could have been much worse. A lot of quality bullpen arms and starters out there who weren't moved, so there's that in the equation too. But my first thought when I saw the details of the trade was one of dismay; giving up 3 quality prospects seemed like a lot to pay for a relief pitcher who isn't even considered a closer. Okay, I know they weren't top 10, or even top 20 prospects, but I liked each one of them and I'm sorry they are gone. But ... we got a live arm, and Dyson isn't just a 2 month rental, but a player who'll be with the team next year, so that's a comfort But please please please, ... don't let this turn into the second coming of Matt Capps.

    I hate this waiting until the last minute stuff. Too much drama and uncertainly for my fragile nerves! As good as the Twins have been this year, I still think they need another high quality arm --- in the bullpen obviously, but another very good starter would be nice too --- if they want to advance past the first round of the playoffs. But this darn clock is ticking ....
