Ranking Twins Players Age 25 and Under: Part 2 (1-5)
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting that you would rank Lee #1 even though he hasn't played a game in the bigs. Kiriloff could be much higher if he would stop getting injured all the time. Lewis is starting to win me over but he also tends to get hurt. Duran needs more consistent command with all his pitches but is my #1 with Kiriloff #2 and Lewis #3 as far as potential. Throwing 98+ isn't a big deal to major league hitters anymore. Hopefully 7-8 of these will really be good when they are here permanently.- 23 replies

As a kid and a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, I went to a game in Yankee Stadium where the Yanks played Washington Senators. The Yanks led the whole way until they brought in a blind pitcher named Ryne Duran who always threw his first warmup pitch to the backstop. Well, Duran proceeded to walk 4 or 5 batters and blew the game for the Yanks. Though I loved Mickey Mantle and Moose Skowron, I rooted for the Senators. After that I continued to follow the Senators and, when the Dodgers moved to LA, I rooted for them and kept going after they moved to Minnesota. I've been a Twins fan almost forever.

We Owe Max Kepler and Emilio Pagan an Apology
twinfan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pitchers and hitters go through good and bad spells all the time. Kepler, however, has been very consistent in his overall stats every year- even though they aren't great. So has Gallo but his are awful except for the 20-25 times he will hit it out. Pagan is either very good or very not so good. You take what you can get since most relievers will blow 5-6 saves or holds a year. If the Twins have to rely on Keichel for the rest of the race, God help them. He'll win 3 or 4 (maybe) but lose 5 or 6 and won't beat a good hitting team. Injuries continue to haunt this team yet (and I probably shouldn't say this) Correa, of all people considering what happened in the off-season, has played almost every game. Maybe if Buxton was healthy at the break we could have traded him. Maybe they will do it in the off-season. We have 6 games left vs Cleveland and we had better win at least 4 but with the way this team hits I don't know if we can. -
3 Trades the Twins Must Make Today
twinfan replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All of these trade possibilities are not going to significantly help the Twins though Pham is the best of them all. I can't see us giving up anything significant for any of these. Reliever Hernandez is the only deal I would make. We aren't beating lefties because Buxton and Correa aren't hitting and Polanco has been absent. Let's see how it goes from here. I wish Arenado was available but he's not so there isn't much to go for. Teaoscar will cost too much. -
Trade Deadline Strategy Thread (More theory, less names)
twinfan replied to Jocko87's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Here's one. What if we traded Buxton? He can't play CF and gets hurt every year but is still regarded as a top talent. Couldn't we get 1 or 2 top players for him? Or a top player and a top pitcher? I don't believe we should trade Kiriloff. I also do not believe that we aren't going anywhere if we make the playoffs. We have the pitching to keep us in games. We don't have the so-called stud starter but we have good starters and a decent defense and that can win a series. But we have to win the division first and hopefully the weaker schedule will help- if we can take KC today. Losing to them has been tough these past 2 days. -
If we can put a package with or without him to St Louis for Arrenado, that would be the best move the Twins could possibly do right now. If not Arrenado, then Candelario from Washington. I don't really believe that Kuechel is the answer to anything for us. Trading Maeda in a package makes sense as you always trade when a player is doing well to get the best return. Let's see what happens but I want Arrenado- NOW.

While I do not like Floro, I understand the deal. I think Lopez, when right, is much better. However, he is not right at this time. If he does become right in the future, this deal will bite us (IMHO). There are better fish in the sea but we have to hope that Floro can do the job.

Bellinger for Kiriloff? Are you crazy? Maybe for a bag of used baseballs and a low A prospect. No way otherwise. If you really want to win, shoot for Arenado and see what the Cards want. Cron was here but I don't see him helping that much.

Byron Buxton's Clock Is Ticking
twinfan replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't understand why Buxton can't play CF but he is doing nothing as a DH. Some players get more into the game when they are also on the field. His swing looks terrible with a noticeable uppercut and he doesn't swing at hittable pitches. Though it pains to see a 5 tool player sit, that has to happen at this time. Just don't make the mistake of trading him- at least not now. It's best to trade a player when he is going good- not bad. And if he is injured, he should be on the IL. Even if we can get him back in late August, he can perhaps be a force down the stretch. As for Julien and Wallner, let's see how they do over a longer run.- 52 replies

Rocco Baldelli’s Leadership Highlighted In Twins Reset
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Look. I will always agree that the players are the ones that can make a manager better or worse. But a manager has to take the heat when a team isn't playing well. That's where Rocco has to take the heat. I feel the team needs a shakeup- even after these 2 wins- and firing the manager and hitting coach seemed plausible. Get rid of Gallo? Well, he does lead the team in Home Runs. Dump Kepler? Well he is just about the best outfielder out there (with a possible exception of Michael A Taylor). I bet the over at the start of the season and still think this team can win 84 games- especially if the starting pitching keeps going well and we get Polanco back for the second half.- 44 replies

My team is Kirby CF, Oliva RF, Carew 2B, Jones LF, Kaat P, Rollins 3B, Morneau 1B, Smalley SS, Reardon RP, Harper C and Winfield DH. The only possible change I would consider id Killebrew at first and switching others around but I'll skip that. It's a tough task but Kirby, Oliva and Carew are the best at their positions by far and Kaat is my favorite all-time Twins pitcher. Thanks for the fun. Now on to APBA baseball to see which team wins.

What Do You Do With a Problem Like Miranda?
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's nice to have these options plus maybe the Twins have some players they can deal for something better if we are to make a run for the Central division and beyond. Right now we have to get and stay healthy since Polanco and Buxton have been missing. We'll see what Miranda does offensively over the next few weeks and go from there but we can't just write him off as our offense has been spotty at best.- 62 replies

Should the Twins Try to Pull Off an Early Trade?
twinfan replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd rather they bring up some AAA hitters than trade anyone. We don't have much to offer right now. -
Don't we have anyone at AAA who can hit? Whatever happened to Miranda? He can't be any worse than these guys. We weren't terrible today but even when we try to build a run, we fail as Correa pops out. Teams go through that and it is a long season and we are VERY lucky to be in the AL Central. To me though, the biggest problem is we keep having guys getting hurt and maybe also playing hurt. That will kill an offense. We've proven that we can hold the best teams down (at least now) but we are even more feeble than Cleveland right now. Let's get some hitters up from AAA who can hit. Trades? What do we have that can bring something in return? I don't see anything and we can't break up the rotation or the bullpen.

The Twins Were Wise to Pass on These 3 Sluggers
twinfan replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't see what was wrong with Miranda at 1B. I would have thought that Abreau would have been a great signing and have to believe that he is currently injured though playing. He is a much better hitter than he currently shows and is an RBI machine. Solano is ok but maybe not a long term answer. Maybe if Lewis is called up, someone like Polanco can move to 1B. The overall hitting by this team is below what we expect from Buxton and Correa and needs to get better if we are to stave off Cleveland again.- 18 replies

Framing is important but not as important as blocking pitches or throwing out runners (though much depends on the pitcher as well). If we ever go to automated balls/strikes calling (a possibility soon with all the home plate umps have to do now), framing may not mean much. I wonder how umpire's calls are actually influenced by framing since they are supposed to call balls and strikes as the pitches cross home plate. We had a former umpire give a speech here a couple of years ago and he said framing may have influenced about 10% of his calls.
-
To me, last year fell apart in early August when the Guardians got hot and we got tired or ???. We could have been closer in the division race but weren't going to win without beating Cleveland who killed us down the stretch.
-
The leadoff batter has changed somewhat in that some teams use a power hitter while others use an on base hitter. We have several choices but none are great though Buxton would be my choice right now. I like Gordon but am not sure he can hit enough. Gallo is a waste anywhere he bats. Kepler will be ok but leadoff???. Lewis would be great when he gets better. Most others are a big question mark. Let's just keep winning.

I thought Archer could help as a long reliever for 3-4 innings in a game. Bundy could help a team looking for pitching depth. Sanchez improved his catching a bit and gets streaky but not consistently enough. He could be a DH for someone vs left handed pitching. Sano needs to get healthy, wasn't a terrible 3B or 1B at times (IMHO) but costs too much. However, the problem for each of these is that they would take away a roster spot from a better player or prospect. Thus, unless a team has a bunch of injuries, I would doubt any of them- except maybe Bundy- will see the major leagues for any decent period of time this season.

Maybe just what we need..... a Season Of The Witch.

Don't need both Solano and Farmer. You cannot win with fringe players even though both are versatile. Solano seems better than Farmer and maybe will bump him off the roster. Can't see dropping Larnach. Definitely don't drop a pitcher. But let's see how Spring Training pans out with injuries or a trade (2 of ours for 1 of theirs who can help).

Finish the Roster - Trade for Reynolds and Sign Chafin or Fulmer
twinfan commented on LA Vikes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
Ober could be a #3 or #4 starter for this team as Maeda and Mahle have to prove themselves after injuries. I'm not sure why so many think Gallo is such an answer. He's good defensively and hits homers but is a hole in the lineup. I'd keep Kepler and sign Fullmer. Still, it's a long way to the start of the season and we'll see. Reynolds would be a nice addition but I'd rather trade prospects that proven big leaguers right now. You don't really know how prospects will turn out. And I can't agree that we would trade starters at the deadline if we are in contention.
