What Should Happen to Miranda When Lewis Comes Back?
twinfan commented on LA Vikes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
Anything can happen before Lewis comes back. If no one gets hurt, I would trade Farmer or release him. Sending Julien down is also a possibility unless he quickly picks it up. Castro is also versatile though he seems better in the infield. I don't know why many don't seem to like Larnach. Kiriloff is a mystery to me. Maybe he's still playing hurt??? While I like Miranda, he isn't a world beater but does stay healthy and can play multiple positions. let's just hope he doesn't go back to when he couldn't hit at all. -
Miguel Sanó Finding Second Life in Los Angeles
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like many sluggers, Sano can be an all or nothing guy. He got a bad rap when playing 3B but wasn't really that bad. He never was able to lay off a slider that broke just off the plate. I'm glad he is getting a shot-mainly due to a starter's injury- and is at least holding water right now. He'll hit for 6-8 games then nothing for 8-10 and he'll strike out a lot (but so does Judge and others). When I see him this year, he just takes too many early, over the plate, strikes which puts him in a hole he doesn't get out of. If he couldn't learn to hit better when Cruz was helping him, he never will. But he can hit 25 homers and bat .230 if he gets 400 at bats. -
Stats are way overblown during the first 20 games of a season. However, only time will tell if Santana can begin to display what his lifelong stats have been. As for other possible replacements, I'm not keen on any of them. Margot is serviceable, Miranda deserves a shot but hasn't gotten it, Martin could be the best bet, Wallner can't hit, Larnach gets a raw deal and the others we could have had aren't great shakes except maybe Turner. Heck, even Joey Gallo and Miguel Sano are hitting a little this early. It will all wash out eventually and Kepler will return but probably not to the stats he had in the last half of last year. Where's Gordon whom I would not have let go.
-
And some starters have a 22.00 ERA or higher. These early numbers mean nothing though it's some fun to laugh at them. Most things even out in the long run to what the player's real ability is. Oh, there are some exceptions like Brady Anderson hitting 50 homers, a player (Cubs outfielder I can't remember) going 5 for 5 on opening day or players having super walk-off years (and dopey GMs paying them a fortune because of it) but most things average out.
-
Though I have had my doubts about Lewis, he's proved that he could be a major league star. He has had injury issues before and, no doubt, will have them again as some players are prone to having them. It's hopeful that he doesn't rush himself back and that the Twins will be ok without him in this weak division. I'd like to see Miranda get a shot at filling in. I'd also look at the waiver wire to see who could do the job. Now let's pray that nobody else gets hurt. Several teams have key players out right now (Cole, Steele, Devon Williams, etc.).

Reevaluating the Jorge Polanco Trade
twinfan commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
I was not for trading Polanco when the subject came up. However, this deal seems fair for both sides. I think the Twins will be happy with DiSClafani and Topa and Gonzalez may be a helpful addition if someone gets hurt. If the trade opens up at bats for others and they succeed, that also is a plus. But losing Polanco will hurt the offense at this point. -
How Will Carlos Santana Fit In With the Minnesota Twins?
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This signing will not be evaluated until Buxton can actually stay on the field and Kiriloff can play. I don't see anything wrong with the signing and wonder why some were writing about his speed or lack of. He's not signed to steal bases. Let's see if Brooks Lee is actually ready and if we can get another good starter before we say the Twins will get to the World Series. Right now they will have a battle with Detroit and maybe Cleveland for the Division.- 48 replies

There are some pitchers available in free agency that may help but management hasn't offered anything? Wood? Carrasco? Lorenzen? Odorizzi (if healthy)? Clevenger? even Matthew Boyd? are all seasoned vets who may be helpful. Some pitchers already signed or traded this past week aren't much to brag about. We'll see.

Twins Should Hang Onto Jorge Polanco, at Least for Now
twinfan replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Anything can happen with youngsters and, while I have never been that high on Lewis, he looks like the real deal IF he stays healthy. I would not trade Polanco in the off-season this year. I think he is one of the 3 most valuable players we have. Again, health is a factor and he isn't getting any younger. I'm more concerned with our starting rotation as Paddack and Varland are BIG question marks (IMHO) and management has done nothing to improve the situation. I see where Odorizzi is a free agent. Is he healthy? Will he come cheap? Is he worth a flier? Is management considering Montgomery or anyone else? I thought after the new year (Happy New Year by the way), we'd sign some help. Where is it?- 104 replies

What Defines Success for Byron Buxton in 2024?
twinfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he stays healthy, everything else will work out. The goal would be 140 games. then you will see 35 homers and 90 RBI and hopefully a .280+ batting average. Oh, and don't forget about 80 walks. -
If we couldn't or wouldn't trade for Adrian Houser whom Milwaukee gave away for nothing, why would we make a stupid deal for this guy who, like Mahle, may not be healthy. Sign Montgomery or any of the other free agents I have mentioned and don't break up a successful bullpen. Pitchers don't go much beyond 6 innings in today's crazy world and Jax has been perhaps our best middle relief pitcher so you want to trade him??? Just not in my book. Merry Christmas to all.

How's Miguel Sano doing in his bid for MLB comeback?
twinfan replied to RpR's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
If he wouldn't listen to Cruz, I doubt he would listen to anyone else. I liked Sano but cringed every time he could not hit a curve breaking outside. -
First of all, the Mahle trade was not a disaster- he simply got hurt so we'll never know. Secondly, San Diego plays in a much tougher division than the Twins. Yes, they fell badly and were poorly managed but they could not compete with the Dodgers, Diamondbacks or even the Giants- even with Snell having a great season. I would not trade Polanco just yet. He is too valuable- even if as a fill-in- but should be the starter at second. Kepler should garner something with the good season he had so dangle him with a minor leaguer (or a Gordon type) or two for a pitcher that we can control for 2+ years. Alex Wood and Carlos Carrasco are still out there (wood would be my choice). Sean Maneaa and Mike Lorenzen are also available. Heck. If you really want to take a chance, Madison Bumgarner is due 5 mil a year from Arizona and may sign for just 1 mil to try for a comeback. Who knows. Detroit seems improved enough to give the Twins a run for our money and we need a starter or two. I'd sign Burnes for 3 years if we could afford him but we probably can't. So do we sign Kershaw for 1 year? Probably not. Let's see what happens.

From the list above, I would target Gray for 3 years, Nola for 4-5 years, Rodriguez for 3-4 years, and Kershaw for 1-2 years. I can't comment about money as all are way overpaid as are most baseball superstars but that's the nature of all sports. I'd love for us to get Ohtani even if he never pitches again but that's probably out of our financial league. I don't trust Snell or Giolito and don't know anything about how Yamamoto would do here though he seems like a good one. I didn't know Montgomery was a FA but he is a good mid-priced pitcher. Also, there will be others who already are (Stroman) or will become free agents. I hope we can keep Gray and even Maeda but we'll see. Finally, we need to get Ryan straightened out and I'm not sold on Paddack.

Why Every Single Twins Hitter Is Actually Just Another Miguel Sano
twinfan commented on Greggory Masterson's blog entry in Brewed in the Trough
This guy sounds like a frustrated and/or uneducated Twins fan. Sorry for the (constructive) truthful criticism. -
Pulling Joe Ryan Was the Correct Decision
twinfan replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Actually I was a bit surprised that Ryan was the starter vs Maeda. But I disagree that pulling him was a good move. He seemed effective enough unless he was hurting. Yes, the bullpen only allowed 2 runs and yes, our 4-9 hitters didn't do the job but the question was about Ryan and Rocco's decision- not the failure of the hitters. -
4 Things That Went Wrong for the Twins in the Playoffs
twinfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hey. At least we weren't the Braves, Dodgers or Orioles who were expected to win. In a short series against the teams best pitchers and manager decisions, anything can happen and usually does. If most things go south, you don't stand much of a chance. -
You never mentioned Pablo Lopez who is THE reason we advanced. As far as the off-season, I don't trust that Bellinger will repeat this season's success. I'll wait to see who will be available. I'd float a Buxton trade to see what we might be able to get. As good as he is, he does us no good being hurt all the time.

Are the Twins Closer to a World Series?
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We are fortunate at this point to be in a relatively easy division. But to take the next step will depend on what happens during the off-season. Will we sign a big bat? Will we keep the key pitchers and/or sign another? Will the kids coming up be for real? Can we stay away from major injuries? And, finally, do players want to come here to play? It was a great season and a nice improvement. Let's go and take another step forward. GO TWINS!- 40 replies

A good clubhouse can make or break a team in most sports. Maybe baseball is less vulnerable to a cancer than most other sports but I am not sure. Of course, talent in baseball wins out compared to basketball, hockey and football but still a bad team member doesn't help at all. And who wants to be around one anyway.

Winder was the hero yesterday with his great relief. But have you ever seen a strike zone so poorly called (or not) in that game? At least both sides had to suffer (or get the breaks). I almost always side with the umpires but yesterday was ridiculous. Was it because he didn't have his own mask? Who knows. And as far as umps having too much to do, maybe. But the rule about hitters having to be looking at the pitcher is just dumb (IMHO). It's the hitter's responsibility to be ready. And as far as Rocco's decision to PH Jeffers, that was a no-brainer. If a manager makes a move and it works, he's a hero. If it fails, he's a bum. I judge a manager more by who he plays and what the lineup is. Our lineups are generally all over the place though they have gotten better lately. Also, a decision to try to move (bunt) a runner over into scoring position and other strategies will factor into how I judge a manager.

It's always nice when a team that is not expected to do much becomes a surprise and players you didn't expect to do much have good years. I'm surprised your favorite team wasn't when we went from last one year to champs the next year. THAT was great. This year's team was expected to be competitive for the Central division title but wasn't picked by many to beat Cleveland or even the White Sox. I think the over/under was around 78 and we are on pace to top that.

One move the Twins should (but won't) make in the Offseason
twinfan replied to Cap'n Piranha's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Your argument doesn't work for 2 reasons. On the one hand, Ohtani and Trout have played together for several years and the Angels, though they are in a tougher division right now, have never made the playoffs. On the other hand (she wore a glove), spending that much money wipes out our team's payroll and they would not be able to afford anyone else. True that Ohtani is the best baseball player on both sides of the ball but he is only one player (ok, 2 players) and how much longer can he do what he does- especially in pitching. Only time will tell. He may stay with the Angels who at least made an attempt this year or go to LA or SF (IMHO). But, like everyone has said, it's nice to dream. I still say we should trade Buxton in the off-season if we can get 2 quality and healthy players for him (hey, that IS an Ohtani). -
My Favorite Immaculate Grid Twins, Ranked
twinfan replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I thought they eliminated those who only had cups of coffee but yesterday's quiz included several possibilities. I could not for the life of me come up with someone who played for both the Twins and Cincy. I usually get about 6 right, sometimes 7 and only once got all 9. But I've also only gotten 4 right on occasion. I give myself 15 minutes. Too many other things to do. But it is fun.- 23 replies
