If we couldn't or wouldn't trade for Adrian Houser whom Milwaukee gave away for nothing, why would we make a stupid deal for this guy who, like Mahle, may not be healthy. Sign Montgomery or any of the other free agents I have mentioned and don't break up a successful bullpen. Pitchers don't go much beyond 6 innings in today's crazy world and Jax has been perhaps our best middle relief pitcher so you want to trade him??? Just not in my book. Merry Christmas to all.

How's Miguel Sano doing in his bid for MLB comeback?
twinfan replied to RpR's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
If he wouldn't listen to Cruz, I doubt he would listen to anyone else. I liked Sano but cringed every time he could not hit a curve breaking outside. -
First of all, the Mahle trade was not a disaster- he simply got hurt so we'll never know. Secondly, San Diego plays in a much tougher division than the Twins. Yes, they fell badly and were poorly managed but they could not compete with the Dodgers, Diamondbacks or even the Giants- even with Snell having a great season. I would not trade Polanco just yet. He is too valuable- even if as a fill-in- but should be the starter at second. Kepler should garner something with the good season he had so dangle him with a minor leaguer (or a Gordon type) or two for a pitcher that we can control for 2+ years. Alex Wood and Carlos Carrasco are still out there (wood would be my choice). Sean Maneaa and Mike Lorenzen are also available. Heck. If you really want to take a chance, Madison Bumgarner is due 5 mil a year from Arizona and may sign for just 1 mil to try for a comeback. Who knows. Detroit seems improved enough to give the Twins a run for our money and we need a starter or two. I'd sign Burnes for 3 years if we could afford him but we probably can't. So do we sign Kershaw for 1 year? Probably not. Let's see what happens.

From the list above, I would target Gray for 3 years, Nola for 4-5 years, Rodriguez for 3-4 years, and Kershaw for 1-2 years. I can't comment about money as all are way overpaid as are most baseball superstars but that's the nature of all sports. I'd love for us to get Ohtani even if he never pitches again but that's probably out of our financial league. I don't trust Snell or Giolito and don't know anything about how Yamamoto would do here though he seems like a good one. I didn't know Montgomery was a FA but he is a good mid-priced pitcher. Also, there will be others who already are (Stroman) or will become free agents. I hope we can keep Gray and even Maeda but we'll see. Finally, we need to get Ryan straightened out and I'm not sold on Paddack.

Why Every Single Twins Hitter Is Actually Just Another Miguel Sano
twinfan commented on Greggory Masterson's blog entry in Brewed in the Trough
This guy sounds like a frustrated and/or uneducated Twins fan. Sorry for the (constructive) truthful criticism. -
Pulling Joe Ryan Was the Correct Decision
twinfan replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Actually I was a bit surprised that Ryan was the starter vs Maeda. But I disagree that pulling him was a good move. He seemed effective enough unless he was hurting. Yes, the bullpen only allowed 2 runs and yes, our 4-9 hitters didn't do the job but the question was about Ryan and Rocco's decision- not the failure of the hitters. -
4 Things That Went Wrong for the Twins in the Playoffs
twinfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hey. At least we weren't the Braves, Dodgers or Orioles who were expected to win. In a short series against the teams best pitchers and manager decisions, anything can happen and usually does. If most things go south, you don't stand much of a chance. -
You never mentioned Pablo Lopez who is THE reason we advanced. As far as the off-season, I don't trust that Bellinger will repeat this season's success. I'll wait to see who will be available. I'd float a Buxton trade to see what we might be able to get. As good as he is, he does us no good being hurt all the time.

Are the Twins Closer to a World Series?
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We are fortunate at this point to be in a relatively easy division. But to take the next step will depend on what happens during the off-season. Will we sign a big bat? Will we keep the key pitchers and/or sign another? Will the kids coming up be for real? Can we stay away from major injuries? And, finally, do players want to come here to play? It was a great season and a nice improvement. Let's go and take another step forward. GO TWINS!- 40 replies

A good clubhouse can make or break a team in most sports. Maybe baseball is less vulnerable to a cancer than most other sports but I am not sure. Of course, talent in baseball wins out compared to basketball, hockey and football but still a bad team member doesn't help at all. And who wants to be around one anyway.

Winder was the hero yesterday with his great relief. But have you ever seen a strike zone so poorly called (or not) in that game? At least both sides had to suffer (or get the breaks). I almost always side with the umpires but yesterday was ridiculous. Was it because he didn't have his own mask? Who knows. And as far as umps having too much to do, maybe. But the rule about hitters having to be looking at the pitcher is just dumb (IMHO). It's the hitter's responsibility to be ready. And as far as Rocco's decision to PH Jeffers, that was a no-brainer. If a manager makes a move and it works, he's a hero. If it fails, he's a bum. I judge a manager more by who he plays and what the lineup is. Our lineups are generally all over the place though they have gotten better lately. Also, a decision to try to move (bunt) a runner over into scoring position and other strategies will factor into how I judge a manager.

It's always nice when a team that is not expected to do much becomes a surprise and players you didn't expect to do much have good years. I'm surprised your favorite team wasn't when we went from last one year to champs the next year. THAT was great. This year's team was expected to be competitive for the Central division title but wasn't picked by many to beat Cleveland or even the White Sox. I think the over/under was around 78 and we are on pace to top that.

One move the Twins should (but won't) make in the Offseason
twinfan replied to Cap'n Piranha's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Your argument doesn't work for 2 reasons. On the one hand, Ohtani and Trout have played together for several years and the Angels, though they are in a tougher division right now, have never made the playoffs. On the other hand (she wore a glove), spending that much money wipes out our team's payroll and they would not be able to afford anyone else. True that Ohtani is the best baseball player on both sides of the ball but he is only one player (ok, 2 players) and how much longer can he do what he does- especially in pitching. Only time will tell. He may stay with the Angels who at least made an attempt this year or go to LA or SF (IMHO). But, like everyone has said, it's nice to dream. I still say we should trade Buxton in the off-season if we can get 2 quality and healthy players for him (hey, that IS an Ohtani). -
My Favorite Immaculate Grid Twins, Ranked
twinfan replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I thought they eliminated those who only had cups of coffee but yesterday's quiz included several possibilities. I could not for the life of me come up with someone who played for both the Twins and Cincy. I usually get about 6 right, sometimes 7 and only once got all 9. But I've also only gotten 4 right on occasion. I give myself 15 minutes. Too many other things to do. But it is fun.- 23 replies

Ranking Twins Players Age 25 and Under: Part 2 (1-5)
twinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting that you would rank Lee #1 even though he hasn't played a game in the bigs. Kiriloff could be much higher if he would stop getting injured all the time. Lewis is starting to win me over but he also tends to get hurt. Duran needs more consistent command with all his pitches but is my #1 with Kiriloff #2 and Lewis #3 as far as potential. Throwing 98+ isn't a big deal to major league hitters anymore. Hopefully 7-8 of these will really be good when they are here permanently.- 23 replies

As a kid and a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, I went to a game in Yankee Stadium where the Yanks played Washington Senators. The Yanks led the whole way until they brought in a blind pitcher named Ryne Duran who always threw his first warmup pitch to the backstop. Well, Duran proceeded to walk 4 or 5 batters and blew the game for the Yanks. Though I loved Mickey Mantle and Moose Skowron, I rooted for the Senators. After that I continued to follow the Senators and, when the Dodgers moved to LA, I rooted for them and kept going after they moved to Minnesota. I've been a Twins fan almost forever.

We Owe Max Kepler and Emilio Pagan an Apology
twinfan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pitchers and hitters go through good and bad spells all the time. Kepler, however, has been very consistent in his overall stats every year- even though they aren't great. So has Gallo but his are awful except for the 20-25 times he will hit it out. Pagan is either very good or very not so good. You take what you can get since most relievers will blow 5-6 saves or holds a year. If the Twins have to rely on Keichel for the rest of the race, God help them. He'll win 3 or 4 (maybe) but lose 5 or 6 and won't beat a good hitting team. Injuries continue to haunt this team yet (and I probably shouldn't say this) Correa, of all people considering what happened in the off-season, has played almost every game. Maybe if Buxton was healthy at the break we could have traded him. Maybe they will do it in the off-season. We have 6 games left vs Cleveland and we had better win at least 4 but with the way this team hits I don't know if we can. -
3 Trades the Twins Must Make Today
twinfan replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All of these trade possibilities are not going to significantly help the Twins though Pham is the best of them all. I can't see us giving up anything significant for any of these. Reliever Hernandez is the only deal I would make. We aren't beating lefties because Buxton and Correa aren't hitting and Polanco has been absent. Let's see how it goes from here. I wish Arenado was available but he's not so there isn't much to go for. Teaoscar will cost too much. -
Trade Deadline Strategy Thread (More theory, less names)
twinfan replied to Jocko87's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Here's one. What if we traded Buxton? He can't play CF and gets hurt every year but is still regarded as a top talent. Couldn't we get 1 or 2 top players for him? Or a top player and a top pitcher? I don't believe we should trade Kiriloff. I also do not believe that we aren't going anywhere if we make the playoffs. We have the pitching to keep us in games. We don't have the so-called stud starter but we have good starters and a decent defense and that can win a series. But we have to win the division first and hopefully the weaker schedule will help- if we can take KC today. Losing to them has been tough these past 2 days. -
If we can put a package with or without him to St Louis for Arrenado, that would be the best move the Twins could possibly do right now. If not Arrenado, then Candelario from Washington. I don't really believe that Kuechel is the answer to anything for us. Trading Maeda in a package makes sense as you always trade when a player is doing well to get the best return. Let's see what happens but I want Arrenado- NOW.

While I do not like Floro, I understand the deal. I think Lopez, when right, is much better. However, he is not right at this time. If he does become right in the future, this deal will bite us (IMHO). There are better fish in the sea but we have to hope that Floro can do the job.

Bellinger for Kiriloff? Are you crazy? Maybe for a bag of used baseballs and a low A prospect. No way otherwise. If you really want to win, shoot for Arenado and see what the Cards want. Cron was here but I don't see him helping that much.
