The Return of Chris Colabello: Plouffe to the DL?

Chris Colabello is on his way back to the Twin Cities to join the Twins. According to Jim Mandelaro, the Twins will be determining whether or not they need to put Trevor Plouffe on the Disabled List with his calf injury. Assuming they do, Colabello will be able to take his roster spot.

Hmm wondering if they are going to send a pitcher down.

Or they could grow some stones and make a decision on Plouffe instead of waiting him out five days and playing with 24 players. It's not like the question is to DL Mauer or Willingham, I like Plouffe but his production is not that much greater than his replacements.

Besides, it's a calf injury for an infielder. When do those not require rest?

They can only recall Colabello before ten days are up in an injury situation, yes? Ergo, somebody is going on the DL when they activate him.

What is the deal with this calf? This is the same thing he had in spring training, and early in the season. Why hasn't it been taken care of?

I've had a calf injury - got it playing softball. Even after it "healed" it was still prone to reinjury - I had to skip games a couple of times later in the season.

Yes that is correct. It didn't sound like Plouffe was that bad yesterday. It must have got worse overnight. We'll wait for the official release.

Well, any progress plouffe has made (minimal) is all shot to hell. It'll no doubt take him six weeks to find his swing when he comes back, judging by last season.

The early report today was that it was his other leg, not the one that bothered him in ST.

The other leg? Are we on our way to another case of bi-lateral leg weakness?

bi-lateral calf weakness is in the works right now.

I wonder , since plouffe didnt play , can they retroactive put him on the 15 day DL?

Good question JohnnyD. I also have another question - can Colabello actually play 3B. He is listed at 3rd on the Rochester roster through MiLB.com. I thought he was just 1B with some ability to play corner OF.

My understanding is that yes, they will be able to retroactively put him on the 15 day DL. I think that would make him eligible to come off June 6th.

I would bet this is a situation where normally, they would go day-to-day, but seeing as how he is coming off the concussion list, and they are already running a thin bench, they can't afford to risk that he'll need more than another day off.

In 9 seasons of Minor League ball, Plouffe played 78 games at 3B

In 9 seasons of Independent League/Minor League ball, Collabello has played 115 games at 3B (and 13 games in the OF)

So yes, he should be able to handle it. He has more experience there now then Plouffe did when they made him the regular 3B last year. Granted, he is primarily a 1b, so he's probably not going to be a super-slick defender, but he should be able to handle routine plays. If he gets a start at 3b, look for Carroll or Escobar to come in as a late defensive replacement.

And he committed 41 errors in those 115 games. Of course Gardy doesn't mind putting Doumit out in RF, so it won't shock me if Collabello does see a start or 2 at 3B, but he shouldn't.

You're not allowed to speculate, unless you put a Dr. in front of your moniker.

O yes, I forget that no intelligent human being can possibly know anything about the human body other than a doctor. Good thing my kids call me "Dr. Daddy." Think that would qualify me for a spot on the Twins training staff?

There is no reason to play Colabello at third except in some bizarre emergency situation.

Let it be noted that my pre-April 25 man roster called for both Herrmann and Colabello on the roster.

Did you draw their names out of a hat? Or just pick the best hitter and the worst hitter from Rochester and call it even?:o
