Would someone kindly explain what the heck a competitive balance pick is and how they are awarded?

Would be a good addition to their first two picks and satisfy the call to get a catcher.

I would argue that if the phrase is as you say, it wasn't worth someone investing the electrons to type it in the first place, as it's meaningless.

Funny you should mention ACL, though, since a top Twins prospect was just lost for a year to re-tearing his.

In Prielipp's case, though, the TJS is in the rear view mirror far enough to almost be a non factor.

It may be that they needed to draft someone under-slot for the $1m that this pick represents, if the demands of their first two picks are over-slot.

Otherwise, it's a puzzling choice.  He hasn't got a schobel's chance in hell of being a major leaguer.

For someone who was thought to be top-20 talent, apparently a few dozen picks were made with risk the overriding factor in skipping him.

All of the teams' boards are all over the place at this point.  The only thing that really qualifies as a reach would probably a pick that's not even on most of the boards.

I don't know that I love the pick, but from here on out it's pretty much wait and see how it turns out.

I assume they had to go under slot here to afford Lee and Prielipp.

Don't dislike Schobel, even if I'm not excited either. But after nailing the first two picks this is hardly a make-or-break pick anyway.

One thing for sure...in Trevor Plouffe the Twins have the clear winner in the "used to be with the team, pick announcer" sweepstakes.

Speaking of which, the Mets should have Bobby Bonilla announce their picks.

Get some use out of the million bucks they're still shelling out every year until 2145.

Plus Rajai Davis can't pick out a suit, and can't remember his lines.

Good hitting SS and high level LHP are usually near the top of my wants, along with the toolsy CF. Much more exciting than slow 1B power hitter types, or utility 2b guys that are well-rounded but masters of nothing. We've seen our share.

mlb.com had a good explanation on their site this morning, in their draft preview article.  Now that the draft has completed so many picks, it's been bumped and I can't find the one that I saw.  A bit of searching finds this from a few months ago, and maybe answers most of your questions:

The basic idea is to give the sad-sack teams an extra pick after the first round.  Our Twins aren't the saddest of sacks and thus got Round B, not Round A.  I can't for the life of me understand a system that doesn't put Oakland near the head of the handout line, though.
