ThePuck Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 we lost Span and Revere (making our offense and OF defense worse), got Worley, Pelfrey and Correia...and all of a sudden we're close to a .500 team? Ah, the offseason optimism...
greengoblinrulz Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Again, Im fine with Pelfrey but keeping Scot Baker woulda been a major improvement.Diamond, most people agree, is a #4 or #5 type on a good team. That's why he's our opening day starter.Worley...love the deal--get that out of the way....but was a #4 or #5 on a good Phillies team last 2 yrs.Correia was a #5 or #6 type on a Pirates team that was .500 each of last 2 Augusts, but then faded hard (lots due to Corriea)Pelfrey.....gonna be a project this year due to TJ....wont be the 200IP guy he was 2 of last 3 yrs.Hendriks....Im a big fan but he has a TON to prove & will have to beat out Nick Blackburn in spring training for job.Is this it for starters???YUCK!!! It is what it is tho. This is a last place teams rotation BUT 2013 is all about getting our prospects ready for 2014.Gibson will be in rotation in the 2nd half or possibly Aug 1st to keep him to the projected 140 innings (cmon get him to 160)Trevor May is on the 40 man roster & if he starts well, could be brought up fast .....big IF tho, but will up in 2nd half sometime.Still think Alex Meyer will make a 2nd half appearance (again if he starts off well in New Brit)

Ah, the offseason optimism... If Benson or Hicks is our 2013 CF, our defense just got a lot better actually. They are both considered way better OF's than Denard/Ben as both have their range/speed but have great arms also

I can't agree with it being better...sure isn't a lot better. Now if Hicks AND Benson are playing in the OF, it's close

ThePuck Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Ryan doing what he does best...slashing payroll while trying to build for the future.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Awesome. So JR has used all that money available to him this offseason to pick up an awful old pitcher for two years and an awful young pitcher for one year. Yee hah. Makes me want to go snatch up an entire section of season tickets. Just ****ing awful. Trade Willingham already and stop screwing around. If you're completely unwilling to pay market price for players that don't suck, start rebuilding properly. At least that gives us something to get excited about in 2013.
johnnydakota Verified Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Sign pelfrey and marcum and I would give this offseason a Ba( B )really, what have they fixed? what assets did they gain?what holes did they fill, or improve on?All they did was reduce payroll and earn another end of the year bonus for cutting payroll
Clyde Verified Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Span + Revere >>>>>>>> Benson/Hicks + Lumbering stiff But 2 out of 3 Benson, Hicks, Arcia >>>>>>>> Span +Revere
kab21 Verified Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I don't really get the point to signing both Correia and Pelfrey. The Twins needed to go after a #2/3 starter to go with Worley this offseason and instead they signed 2 #4/5 guys (upside) and pissed a little money down the drain. It's pretty clear that JR is doing whatever it takes to avoid tying up future payroll and build internally. It's a good long term plan but the Twins aren't that poor and unless something crazy happens they aren't going to come close to a 90-100M payroll in 2014/2015. And even that payroll is below their means but I understand (and support) that they are rebuilding. So far this offseason's FA's are reminding me of '07/'08 offseason where they had extra money (after the Johan and Torii departures) but shopped in the bargain bin spending 15-20M on guys like Lamb, Everett, Monroe, and Livan. These guys were awful and aside from Lamb they were expected to be awful but they avoided tying up money long term. Perhaps JR will surprise me but I now think these are the 3 pitchers that we were going to add this offseason.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Pelfrey was thought pretty highly for a while as a prospect... This is another one that you could argue that the Mets rushed him too quickly instead of letting him develop on his own. He's also a prime candidate for picking up a tick or two on his velocity, as TJ tends to do that. I think that Baker would have been a better signing, but this is certainly better than Correia, so I won't complain there. Since he's stock piling question marks, I'd go hard after Bedard or Marcum at this point. I could see some of these guys getting flipped at the deadline if they turn out OK.

Yup, for all the talk and hope of JR being different with money available hasn't been the case so far. Good bargain signings last year, but still no interest in making significant moves. It's what was forseeable based on the team's history sadly.

Good bargain signings last year, but still no interest in making significant moves. It's what was forseeable based on the team's history sadly. Hard to judge though since it's not a competitive team and typically putting a ton of money into FA's doesn't rebuild a team and instead just pushes off rebuilding for a few years. I just wish that he would quit pissing decent money down the drain on the bargain bin type FA's. 14M committed for a pair of back end starters could have went a fair ways towards landing a Jackson, Marcum, or Dempster. Perhaps I'll be shocked and they will also sign Jackson or Marcum but I doubt it. The Twins also could have traded a mid tier relief prospect and landed Haren for about 13M. Haren actually had the chance to be good.
Twins GFP Verified Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Don't lump this one in with the Correia signing. A one year, make good deal with a potential mid-level starter is not all bad, especially if he wants to come here. I'll say it again: You are not going to have 4 #1 starters in your rotation, you need cheap, (hopefully) effective pitching as well. I have no problem with this. If it works, he may be here a while. If not, it only cost money (ie no prospects).

It appears the Twins went into the offseason prizing depth over talent when they needed to do the opposite. Again though, that has been JR's track record as a GM. Many were expecting something from him that has not been part of his style at any point in his tenure. And contrary to popular belief, this isn't the first time they've had money available to spend.

Erock Verified Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Nothing wrong with signing Pelfrey to one year 4 million. It would look pretty great if it was paired with a Marcum or McCarthy signing instead of a Correia signing...
ThePuck Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I don't dislike this signing in a bubble; however, after getting Correia and Worley this is likely the final touch to the rotation while we made our offense worse along with our OF defense worse. Additionally, we have yet to touch the IF. Just means another disappointing season coming...gotta look forward...and pray a huge percentage of who we are counting on work out...

Just means another disappointing season coming...gotta look forward...and pray a huge percentage of who we are counting on work out...Yeah, I feel the same way. I don't think a Joe Saunders signing is coming along with this one, I think they're just grabbing as many cheap short-term arms as they can. But given that Pelfrey's TJ surgery was in May AND you're switching him from NL to AL (with a bad outfield defense), I'm a little afraid for what the results may be. Look, at the end of the day, it's more important that they don't do anything to mess up 2014 and beyond than do anything that will dramatically improve us in 2013. But it is a weird dichotomy where they seem to have figured out what an "upside" arm looks like in the minor leaguers, yet their FA signings are still guys that have no real chance of catching on here long term.
ThePuck Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 How much will we be paying our rotation this year?
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 How would signing legit pitchers this year be bad for next year?
ThePuck Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Next year, if both May and Meyer make a huge jump, we could see May, Meyer, Gibson, Worley and Diamond...and be paying less than 5M for our rotation. WIllingham will likely be gone...as will Morneau... So, Mauer's salary aside, all the other starters could very well have a salary less than a million..except Correia and Doumitt, if they aren't gone too. I'm sure I'm missing someone...but the point is pretty clear I think
twins4121 Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 i'm trying to force myself to have some sort of optimism... but damn, we don't have one pitcher that we can rely on right now. twins4121 Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 It was only two years ago that Pelfrey outperformed James Shields by 4.2 WAR - Anyone else smell steal of the offseason? Tommy John Surgery... Many guys around the league are thriving after TJ surgery, but it's still a gamble paying him 4 million eight months after his surgery, you can't expect anything out of him until he proves he's healthy... But yes I half way agree, POSSIBLY a steal with his past performances
panolo Provisional Member Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I have zero clue why half you folks think $4-5 mil is expensive for a non-arb eligible starter. It's not. Look at the 2012 salaries. Mighty few starters pitching 150+ inn that make less. Pelfrey is fine at that price, imo. Maybe they are sour on Bedard because he is always hurt and has had attitude trouble in the past. With the chances of us using many young players they might not want to subject them to someone like that. I would also like to see Marcum added however, I think it is unlikely.
