With pitching going the way it is...

Is it time to lock up Berrios and Odo to long term contracts before pricing gets out of hand......if Jose wanted 4 or 5  @ 20-25/yr I think you have to do that.....if he wants to get into the 30-35/yr that gets sketchy....don't think this team can afford that.  For Odo 4 for 85 to 5 for 100 would do as well.

Rather than trying to get others to come we better get the guys we have to stay.

Would have loved to see Kluber, but I'm sure no way Tribe was going to trade him in the division.

If it is true that FAs don't want to come to MN for lots of reasons, why would Odo sign to stay here?

That said, you don't have to pay Berrios anywhere near that much. He's only making $5MM this year. There is a thread about it on the site with some good comments about what it would take.

As for Odo, I think you'd have to go 5/100 to get him to stay. Plenty of people here have said that's too much for a number 2/3 type, so I'm not sure how the site would feel about it. I'd do that, given, as you say, how the market has gone. It also, more importantly, means they have budget and a roster spot with more certainty going forward. That makes planning easier, let alone the roster likely better for 3-4 years....

Why would Odo take less that much less than Wheeler?

Why would Odo take less that much less than Wheeler?

Well, Wheeler got that on the open market, while Odo is still a year away from that point. No one else can bid for Odo's services right now, and he's risking injury and regression in the next year before he gets to that point. So I'd expect some discount, relative to Wheeler's deal. I'm not sure how much, but a 5/100 deal doesn't seem out of line.

(There's also the matter of whether 5/100 replaces his current 1/17.8 deal, or is on top of it -- the latter case would also mean Odo would be a year older when the deal starts than Wheeler is now.)

He already took a QO to stay here, when he didn't have to. Doesn't necessarily mean he wants to sign here long-term but he's probably more likely than most FAs.

And in general, limitations of FA recruiting probably don't apply equally to extensions for current players. Odorizzi has already made arrangements to live/travel here, so it's just a matter of continuing those, rather than changing anything.

There is no way the Twins tack on 5 more plus the QO, right? so it would have to be to replace this year, and my thoughts are the Twins start with Madbum, Odo says Wheeler and they settle at 5/100. Now would he realistically take that and/or the Twins offer that? History says no on the Twins and maybe on Odo, but he already bet on himself once and it seems like it might have cost him some cash, would he do that twice? IMO.

Yes! I would much rather see them invest long-term in pitchers that have been successful and happy in Minnesota. Berrios and Odorizzi is an excellent long-term foundation to build around. The fact that they've both been here is also beneficial in that the Twins have been managed their workloads fairly conservatively so you can reasonably expect good health.

Wade Miley signs 2 years 15 mill with the Reds? That would have helped the rotation a little.

IMO Miley is nothing special.  He had an xFIP of around 4.50 last year, which was just a scratch higher than Martin Perez's...while his K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 were all similar.  I'd rather see one of the younger guys get the starts than committing that kind of money to a veteran for multiple seasons.

If the Twins are going to suceed until they get a new TV contract, some of the younger pitchers are going to have to step up.  Twins are not going to pay everyone in their current core, nor are all of them going to stay after 6 years.

That being said an extension for Berrios is a necessity this winter.  Otherwise you will have to look at him leaving after 6 years.  Other thing is that you have to identify Boris clients and if they are not willing to take an extension, you must move them after 4 years to maximize return.  It sucks, but if you are not going to pay the going rate, this is the only sustainable way.
