Vikings @ Packers.

Packers sliced through the defense like it wasn't even on the field that opening drive. Zero resistance whatsoever.

Not sure what happened, but they better get it fixed.

Cousins played poorly today. Can't beat anyone when the qb plays so bad. Great job getting back into the game, but just gave it away. Defense looked pretty good after the initial points.

Kirk wasn't good enough last year either. Sigh.

Right.... but he was flat out bad today. Missed throws, bad decisions, turnovers. He isn't the guy.

Probably not. There was no other better option when they signed him, so now what?

Draft or develop a qb. I think the nfl does a terrible job handling this position, especially young talent. Take Brees... almost written off. Brady drafted in the later rounds, same with Wilson. I think there are many guys that don't get put in a position to succeed, or don't get the chance at all.

It is like trying to find an Ace starting pitcher. You either have to get one at the top of the draft or get lucky. The Vikes drafted Ponder at #11 in 2011, and Teddy #30ish in 2014. Those are the only qbs draft in the span. Regardless of being at the top of the draft, you can't get any talent without being willing to try.

So, a playoff team should have punted on QB going into the draft? That's your argument? And punted on the next year or two, most likely?

I supported the Cousins decision. Looking back, I'm not sure Keenum would have performed any different.

My point is that a lack of planning and poor evaluation for this position led the Vikes to where signing Cousins was the best option. You don't target your starting qb in the fifth round, but you can't draft the next Brady if you don't draft qbs.

I do agree they should be doing something different, but I don't see many late QBs that look good right now....

I agree with Badsmerf.

Signing Cousins was probably their best option at the time.

But, they dug themselves that hole by failing at the position historically.

I'm no Spring chicken anymore, and yet the closest they've ever come to drafting and developing a franchise quarterback in my lifetime was Daunte Culpepper.

Some of that was bad luck, we'll never know how Bridgewater would have developed if not for the catastrophic injury, and some was just bad talent evaluation- Ponder and TJack. But, regardless of how it happened, the successful organizations are finding a way.

This team flippantly throws away draft picks left and right on players it cuts almost immediately. Yet they seemingly refuse to throw numbers at drafting quarterbacks. I'd pick one every single year until I found one.

Give back the 7 points stolen by the officiating on that ridiculous offensive pass interference call, that wasnt even called, and the Vikings win.

The NFL is such a joke.

That's only 4 points. We got a field goal instead.

I don't blame the refs one bit this game. Kirk Cousins was a failure this game. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Spielman IMO tied his job security to this signing and it looks bad. I think he's gotta go if they don't make the playoffs again.

I'm so tired of this team not being able to find a kicker. Unreal.

Me too Mr. Brooks. It's mind.boggling. that no matter who they try to sign they forget how to kick accurately.

They need to clean house if they miss the playoffs again. Blow it up.

The Saints lost a touchdown early on a phantom whistle stopping a play, and the Bears were granted a generous timeout with 1 second left, setting up their winning field goal. I’m sure there were others, but those caught my eye while glancing at the highlights.

I’m glad the NFL fixed the catch rule, but it still has a terrible officiating problem that undermines the results of too many games.

this game was an abomination... O didn't show. D didn't show by spotting the Packers 21 to start. And the officials sealed the deal. Any one of those changes and the game is won.

It took 5 years to define what a catch is. By 2024 maybe the NFL can define what pass interference is...

I love professional football, but only this league would continue to shoot themselves in the foot with sloppy rule changes.

According to NexGen Stats, Cousins had the most time in the pocket to throw out of all QBs this week, so the line wasn't the problem. It was just him.

I suppose receivers not getting open could be a contributing factor for that stat, too. Likewise a defective offensive plan, such as poor selection of primary receivers for a particular blocking pattern.

Posted

Apparently he was pressured on sixty percent of his drop backs. That's very, very, very bad.

That's a stat that needs context though. If a QB holds the ball too long, he's eventually going to face pressure. Even the best o-line can only block for so long.

Cousins looked flat out awful to me yesterday. He looked like a rookie, like the game was moving too fast for him to process.

Completely unacceptable for a guy making that much money, IMO.

It's a good thing I'm not paid to make these decisions, because I loved the signing at the time. But I was wrong. Cousins isn't a good QB. This team is going nowhere as long as he's under center.

From my eye test, it seemed like he had a normal amount of pressure. His missed throws weren't because he was running for his life. I feel like he was pretty good in 2018 when being pressured, but don't know where to find that start.

I mostly don't understand why Cousins forced the throw in the end zone... and why the play was even called. That drive they had 6 designed running plays and gathered 41 yards (taking out the scramble) out of the 9 total plays. On the 8 yard line.... Just had runs of 14, 3, and 8.... Defense was on their heels... Keep pushing them and score.

Yeah I think sometimes these NFL coaches get a little bit too caught up in thinking they have to "outsmart" the other team, rather than just keep doing what's working, even if the other team knows it's coming but can't stop it.

I assume they figured they'd catch the Packers by surprise by throwing on 1st down after they'd been running the ball so well.

They had an interesting stat on 9- noon, Cousins has just the 27th best passer rating in the NFL inside the 10 yard line over the last 3 years. If the coaching staff has that info, and I don't know why they wouldn't, then it's downright malpractice to call that play on 1st and goal.

He was terrible. Gotta hope it's just one bad game and he goes back to being at least a game manager.

I thought at the time Cousins was the only option they had to move the roster into Super Bowl contenders. Like you, if I were paid to make that decision I will most likely be fired at the end of the season. Just like Spielman should if they miss the playoffs again.
