Meh, who would be the current day viola, Blyleven, berenguer and reardon? I’d feel a lot better with reardon on the mound to close a game than any of our guys

Yeah, Reardon would be all right, although at 63, his velo is down a couple mph.

And plus he’s scary

That will never happen again. That team would not even qualify for the postseason in the modern-day format. They also lucked into home field for both rounds of the postseason because that rotated instead of being awarded to the team with the better record. And now teams have to go through three rounds (plus a wild card game) to win it all, meaning 4 starting pitchers are needed. They were probably the least likely team to win a World Championship ever. And I enjoyed every minute of it.

Edit: To clarify, Oakland would have won the AL West in today's format and the Twins, who had a better record than Oakland, would have finished third in the wild card standings and thereby found themselves on the outside looking in.

A good counterpoint, but I find it hard to believe the 1987 Twins would have gone all the way without home field advantage.

I wonder if a team has ever won a World Series with an average or worse pitching staff

Twins team pitching is fourth in the AL, quite a bit better than average
