Maybe I drink too much...

With all the talk about openers and stacking pitchers, and the Twins having several starting pitchers close to the bigs and on the 40 man roster, I was wondering if they would consider a rotating set of stackers for the fifth spot. Maybe Romero/Thorpe, Stewart/ Gonsalves, and Littell/deJonge. You could send them down after they pitch, call up two bats until the fifth spot is up again, and then recall the next pair. After ten days, I believe, they could be recalled. This would lengthen the bench for the first four starters. It would also give all the young pitchers exposure and better prepare them for 2020, when we lose three starters. What do you think?

I’m stone cold sober and think this has some merit. At least cycle through one of the pitchers in that slot (alternating) and bringing up one hitter.

We'll have to wait and see how Rocco manages pitching - for Molly, that woulda been a win.

A well-managed, competent pitching staff gives you the opportunity to have a deeper bench, which I would like.

I'm on my way to Mexico... not quite drunk. not quite sober, just waiting for a flight..

I like the idea. The only thing I see is that there are some rules in terms of how long a person can stay down. That could pose an issue if someone gets hurt. Great way to get some young arms acclimated though.

The rule stipulating how long a player must stay down before he can be recalled again doesn't apply if he's replacing a DL'd player, I don't believe.

Talked about this at the Meltdown, but imagine this three-pitcher, three-inning-apiece setup:

1. Romero

2. Gonsalves

3. Stewart

You'd really mess with some teams doing this.

You'll go in planning to consume about 25% of your pitching staff every fifth day, not taking into account the times you'll judge after an inning or so that one of these three "just doesn't have it today" and another guy will need to come in?

I think this plan works better when you have a rotation otherwise populated with 6+ inning guys. With 7 pitchers thus slated for tightly orchestrated use, it leaves 6 to cover relief in the other four games (assuming a 13-man staff), and not all of those guys will be everyday-use guys, or long-men for when one of the starters does badly.

The stacking plan needs for everything to go perfectly, which it never does.
