I don't think you can equate commitment to number of posts. People have joined at different times. The only thing the site can give us is a post total. Someone here for two years having posted 2000 times vs someone here for 6 years having posted the same. I just think it's not a great criterion and doesn't measure anything other than post total.

Just to be clear, I was drawing from John Bonnes's weekly summary from last week. I presume either he or Brock pulled some numbers from the database, and while JB didn't share the raw data, it provides a counterpoint to the totals that we can easily see.

I also didn't feel I was equating one thing to another. When sifting through for candidates, you look for many things. It's disappointing to think of somebody who might be good, and then realize/discover that he or she isn't actually around here consistently. So I took the opposite tack in looking for good candidates. Nothing deeper than that.

I guess I find Don, along with wsnydes, to be kind of  ... well ... bland. The reason we are looking is to get more numbers to turn around the game threads from overly negative, drive by type posters, taking over the threads. Getting people who can respond to those posters and drown their noise. And yes, then they have to be a moderator, too. So, given that is a primary, I'm looking for someone who can inject themselves into situations and add something in the process.

I think we're seeing a very wide gap in what we see is important in a moderator. I'm looking for personality more than anything else. Not someone who can tow the straight and narrow and be a 'policeman'. I'd also really like to hear from Tom and the site owners ... how is it they see moderation for the site going forward. We are in a very different place now than we once were, and maybe moderation and moderators needs to be more ... well, less sticklers for rules (not that we throw rules out the window) but more, I don't know ... more personalities. I guess we all kind of are that anyway. But I'd still like to hear what they want.

As for spycake, I don't know him personally. Brock already PM'd him ... I think. Did he hear back yet?

This is a good perspective.

The word "leadership" comes to mind in what you are driving at.

It's a little bit of a dilemma, then. I want the game threads to be a place to relax and enjoy the game, with others in a like-minded spirit. Being a leader in relaxation makes kind of a difficult needle to thread. Yoga teachers for instance can be the butt of jokes. :)

I'm not sure being a mod is a requirement though for turning around some of that noise in the game threads. That's more a function of simply finding better participants. A lot of the people who made game threads what they were don't post in them that often anymore... Part of that, to be honest, is b/c the Twins were bad for so long... it's only natural that the negativity follows.

I do agree though about the leadership principles that you are looking for. A lot of that though may be more perception than reality. The people that stay out of our cross hairs also tend to not be noticed. SpyCake is an easy and obvious exception, mainly b/c the guy is very intelligent and articulate.

But game threads is where this discussion began, and the need to have more of a presence specifically there. This is why I’m looking perhaps a little bit differently than the rest of you. That said, other than Brock already jumping on spycake, I want to hear from the owners of the site what direction they want to take.

Reading today's game thread intro, it occurs to me that Blake has a dash of personality, more so than Don and wsndys anyhow. 5K+ posts isn't too shabby either as far as frequency goes.

I'm not a huge fan of either Don or Blake as moderators, but eh, I'm not completely opposed, either. If the majority thought they'd be good, including input from the owners, so be it. But Doc? Sorry, but that would be a confirmed 'no' for me.

I'm with Carole on Doc. He's a nice guy, and he stays on the right side of the line... not quite sure I want him as a mod though, unless I'm in the mood to read novels in the mod forum.

As for Bighat, I've found him disagreeable a couple of times, certainly not a disqualifier, but I think others have been better suited to moderating, such as Don Walcott.

I'm going back to this comment after reading and participating in a few game threads this past weekend and I just don't see it. I see a few critical comments regarding in-game misplays, but I don't see a hammering of points or drive-by shots as many do. That said, I'm not sure what everyone is looking for in a moderator or what everyone thinks would make a good moderator. I really don't want someone who is 'nice' all the time ... or none of us would be here. IMO, we need people who can respond to the drive-bys and the negative nellies as Chief does or snepp does or Ash does ... and maybe Don and Blake can do that and we just haven't seen it. Both of them are great posters ... I'm just not sure if anyone, outside of spycake, would make a good moderator, including those I've suggested, too. (Although I do really like Han Joelo.)

There doesn't seem to be any obvious answers outside of spycake; however, depending on the person, I've found giving someone added responsibility often gets the person to sand off many of their rough edges all on their own.

I'm not sure we can definitively identify which posters would do that, but I'd guess most names already thrown out here would understand being a moderator comes with greater expectations of performance and compliance.

Maybe. Which is why I want input from Tom and the owners. Now that the site is no longer in its infancy, and is no longer the ‘wild west’, I wonder if the moderators’ mission has changed at all in their eyes in what they want from us for the site moving forward. I mean, the idea of having more of a presence in game threads in order to influence what kind of environment it is through public response to the drive-bys and negative nellies, to ‘drown out’ the noise vs simply issuing warnings is a departure from past response. I think warnings have become a last resort or saved for the most egregious cases and isn’t the ‘go to’ answer, so maybe we need moderators who have not only a public persona, but the right public persona? I’m just reflecting here of what we were and what we’ve become and if that shouldn’t alter our approach, and why I’ve thrown out the names I have and feel uncertain about some of the others despite them being very nice posters. Maybe we need more snark?

Not that I've been around much but I've been advocating for the first bolded sentence for awhile. I couldn't agree more.

The second bolded......yes....yes.

Oh, and I think Spycake would be a great choice for a new mod.

What about twinssporto?

Don't know him... but I've enjoyed his GT contributions for what that's worth... never been the radar from what I can tell either. Definitely worth watching.

I met twinssporto at Target Field (and I owe him a beer!). Good guy, I think. He's moving toward empty nestism, so he's become more involved in following the Twins, including his participation in game threads. He did echo the recurring mod theme of dealing with negativity when we discussed the game threads. I guess I'd have to look at his overall contributions on the site, but I think he could be good.

Update?

Have we contacted Spycake?

If so, response?

I’m pretty sure Brock contacted him, but haven’t heard what his response is/was.

I don’t know his body of work but I remember contacting him a few times about doing game threads. I’ve just noticed that he seems to be able to respond to some of those who just want to drive by and grouse in a good way.

Empty nest-ism makes him similar to several of us, which might cut down the perceived diversity - OTOH it helps to have the time to invest on a regular basis.

Lol ... maybe I'll walk this back a little ... or maybe he's just 'come around' ... or maybe the Twins winning was the trick ...

That's dated June 2016, so I poked around a little in the game threads around then. Maybe he had a few sour posts I didn't see, but what I ran across was reasonably convivial.

I'm sure you picked up on something at the time, though.

Probably an over all example of misery loving company ...

That said, I'm going back to Han Joelo as a possibility. :)

You have a long memory.

Lol ... no ... I just know how to use the advanced search feature to find mentions of a poster in this forum.

I'm bumping this as it appears spycake has no interest.

I want to reiterate my thought on Han Joelo. I think he'd be a good moderator.

I'd also like to throw out another name ... SwainZag.

He made a comment in last night's game recap that indicated an interest in moderation policy, at least. :)

I saw that ... and wrote to him and asked him about it. And I really liked his reply, which is why I bumped this post and reiterated my nomination. :)
