notoriousgod71 Verified Member Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 If the Twins really wanted to win they could. They're not losing money, nor will they ever lose money. It's just an apathetic attitude by the front office and ownership. I really don't know why they wouldn't push to win every single season. Winning would increase their profits the more they do it. Every year it seems like they are the fantasy football player that signs up, forgets about the draft and gets an autodrafted team, and then checks in every 3-4 weeks while making excuses.
cmoss84 Verified Member Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 Gonsalves at 3/1.5. Call me a cheap a$$ but when did the Twins last sign a long term expensive contract that proved out? Nolasco? Hughes? Mauer?Do you think we can make the playoffs this year? If you do, do you think Gonsalves is going to be a key part of the rotation? You might be right-I just don't see him making that kind of contribution for a year or two. Ervin Santana has been pretty good. I would put Lynn/Cobb in the same category. Just like most of you, I don't see us shelling out $150 for Darvish.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 I've always had my doubts, but it is too early to assume they aren't signing Darvish. We just don't know. I would bet it is Lynn or Cobb, or someone fans probably won't be happy with, but we'll see.

Dantes929 Verified Member Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 Darvish. This team has plenty of mid-rotation guys as it is, they need quality, not quantity. 2018 WC matchup Tuesday Oct 2: Twins: Lynn (0-0) at Red Sox: Sale (0-0) Gross. Looks like another early exit. How about Sale who has a 4.21 career ERA against the Twins vs Cobb who has a 3.43 career ERA against the Red Sox. Ok, I would rather have Sale but its really not that small of a sample size.
Dantes929 Verified Member Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 Deal is reportedly for 5 years.Maybe this will start to break up any starting pitcher log jam.I’m guessing this means the Brewers were the unnamed fifth team in the Darvish sweepstakes. My guess is that the Twins will end up with Cobb.If the end up with Cobb I would be thrilled. I said as soon as the season ended that there were 30 teams looking for pitching and the supply was less than 10 so we were quite unlikely to end up with anyone. If we end up with Cobb and Reed that is a pretty huge add. Maybe it doesn't get us to the Indians but it definitely narrows the gap. Plus improvement should still come from within in the form of a confident Buxton a more mature Kepler and hopefully someone like Gonsalves. Cobb and Reed would really be an improvement. Santana, Berrios, Cobb, Gibson and Mejia. So much better than down the stretch last year.

(Also I swear I read/heard that Sale or the Red Sox discovered he was tipping pitches against the Twins. He did better against the Twins in the two games last year).

But to do more than contend we will have to compete with the money somehow if we aren’t going to win the bidding war.
cmoss84 Verified Member Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 Would you guys rather have: Darvish at 6/150 (or something simliar) or Lynn for 4/70 AND Cobb at 4/70I don't have or use twitter-my apologies Tom! I just saw your article. Apparently we're on the same page.

KirbyDome89 Verified Member Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 If the Twins really wanted to win they could. This is what gets me. They could win the Darvish sweepstakes if they wanted to. All we've heard all offseason is how they're willing to spend and how enamored they are with Yu. Now, as soon as the offers start to gain traction the Twins immediately bow out? They couldn't foresee Darvish commanding 5-6 years at roughly $150 but posters here floated similar numbers across this board the entire time? If they were only in on Yu at a bargain price then why talk themselves up about their willingness to spend? If that tweet is true, then almost any way you cut it, the Twins look like they have egg on their face. Hopefully the report is off base and MN is making a real run at Darvish. I can't believe Milwaukee would be a more serious threat to land him than the Twins.

If he had the 150M agreement, I think he's signed and the dominos start to fall. I'm with you on this. I don't think the Twins are able to sign anyone they want and turn a profit as has been suggested here, but I do think signing Darvish will not make it so that they won't. It will hurt flexibility later on, but I'm really tired of getting second tier FAs in the name of preserving flexibility that is never used... I want Darvish. Lynn is my number 2. Cobb is 3. I'll be disappointed if they don't walk away with one of those 3. If they don't, I'm trading for Archer. They need results in the rotation if they want to do anything more than hope for better luck in the WC game.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 Santana and Castro Castro was expensive?
