If he rejects it, the team compensation depends on how much he signs for. Here's the primer:https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/08/offseason-primer-the-new-qualifying-offer-rules.html If I read that correctly, if the Twins sign Cobb for less than 50m, they'd lose their third highest pick in the upcoming draft.

The Twins qualify under this, don't they? If the signing team received revenue sharing and didn’t exceed the luxury tax threshold in the previous season, the team only has to surrender its third-highest pick in the next draft. One team losing a pick, and the other team gaining one, seem to be two separate processes.
drjim Provisional Member Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 Losing their third pick shouldn't really mean a thing.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 The dollar value does matter to the Rays (I think). They expect Cobb to receive $50 million, which will qualify them for the compensation pick between the 1st and 2nd round. Here is a link about Cobb's QO from the Ray's perspective. https://www.draysbay.com/2017/10/3/16411606/alex-cobb-qualifying-offer-tampa-bay-rays
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 Losing their third pick shouldn't really mean a thing. yeah, this will either be a second, supplemental second, or a third round pick depending on whether they get a supplemental pick like they did last year. If they think Cobb is the right guy, I think they should do it.
Shaitan Verified Member Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 They pick something like 20th, so I'm really not concerned. A top 10 pick would be different.
big dog Verified Member Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 No hurdle whatsoever. Go after him.

A top 10 pick would be different. The CBA changed so it is the 3rd pick that the Twins get in the draft so 2nd or 3rd round. This shouldn't be a factor at all if they want him.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 Yeah, the 3rd round pick or whatever shouldn't prevent them at all from scooping up Cobb (if that is what they choose to do)
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I've been in on Lynn and maybe Chatwood previously. But the more I look at it and the more I read, I think Cobb has as much upside, for less, though factors as a bit more "unsure" than the other two. He just might be the smarter move and the draft pick just shouldn't be a factor at this point. I think we can all agree on that.
