This is my feeling as well. The Tigers have never shown a desire to dump salary for salary's sake. As a result, their asking price is likely higher than Verlander's worth as a player.

It sounds like they just dumped Justin Upton.  He did have an opt out and I would guess he would have opted out rather than be a part of the rebuild.

Wow. What prospect would the Tigers want from the Angels?! Their farm system is barren.

Number 9 prospect, and either a player to be named, or cash.....so nothing. Just a salary dump.

Yeah, that's my take on it as well. So it probably wasn't a salary concern as much as a "get something for him before he goes" situation, even if that return was virtually nothing.

Makes you wonder if Upton flat-out told them he was opting out.

That's what is being reported, yes. He said he would opt out.

edit: he did not promise the Angels he would not opt out for them, it is reported.

Wow, the Tigers are finally doing it. Upton for a bag of balls? For the playoff run I totally would have pushed Kepler to the bench for Upton + what? Granite? Even less?

Alas, I'm sure Detroit would have been much less interested in trading him to the Twins and helping a division rival make a playoff run.

Well, Upton was going to opt out, so that's a bit different than Verlander or others....

why not trade him for a flyer, and save money? I'm surprised more teams don't just cut FA to be types, like Pittsburgh did this week.

A source said that minor league pitcher Grayson Long will be going to Detroit in the trade. Long, a former third-round pick, went 8-6 with a 2.52 ERA in 23 starts with the Angels' Double-A Mobile farm club this season.

Pretty good stats for a guy not ranked high! that said, let me check FG rankings, brb....

Grayson Long, RHP, 1.1 KATOH+ – Long was mostly 89-93 in the 2016 Fall League, where he was picking up innings after missing several months due to injury. I’ve seen him 88-90 this spring with the usual fringe cutter/slider and changeup combo. He has a big, strong-looking, inning-eater body. Scouts are naturally apprehensive about pegging him as such, though, in light of last year’s injury woes.

While they're still not out of the bottom 7-8 systems, the Angels are easily not the worst in the league anymore, and very possibly they might not even be bottom 5. That is an accomplishment for where they've been.

Who has the worst system these days? The running bit over the last 2-3 years is the Angels having bare cupboards in the minors.

Upton's bat at the Twins' DH spot would sure look good in September, but not sure I would pay that much within the Division.  MLB.com has Long as the Tigers' 12th best prospect as of now, that is at the neighbourhood of where they rank Stewart, Graterol, Rooker, Enlow, Thorpe etc for the Twins.  Not sure that I would pay that price.  Esp. within the Division and knowing that this team has major flaws on the pitching side, that even if it makes it as a wild card, it will be really hard to go far in the post-season

You wouldn't need to push Kepler to the bench, unless you wanted to against LHers.

Push Vargas to the bench, or whoever's picking up the DH ABs.

Cubs, Diamondbacks, and Marlins are my bottom three currently.

The Tigers system doesn't have nearly the depth ours does.

This guy would be late teens at best in our system.

Probably the equivalent of what the Twins got for Kintzler.
