Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Aug 21st. Who's planning a viewing party? https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-who-what-where-when-and-how I won't be going, so who will be the vicarious reporters?
spinowner Provisional Member Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I'm not having a party or anything but I will be in or near Lathrop, MO when it happens. NOT missing it.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 August 21st is a double header at guaranteed rate field between the White Sox and the Twins. That's where I'll be, day 1 of 28 days of vacation.
glunn Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I will be there, near Salem Oregon. Then breakfast at the local Denny's.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Well, I live VERY close to peak area, but my wife and I don't have a firm plan yet. There is a tiny chance she's out of town! If she's out of town, I might go to the minor league baseball game that has an event for it. The winery I thought about going to is already sold out, I believe.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Glasses for viewing are cheap on Amazon, stock up. I will spend the weekend in St. Louis and trek south a bit to see the whole thing.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I'll be in Albany for work that week. Should be able to see the partial.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I'll have to take a drive out in the country to see it... There's way too much artificial lighting around my place to see it clearly.
steve Verified Member Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 We are going to Lincoln Nebraska the day before, then to a viewing site depending on local weather conditions. Figure we could go anywhere from Grand Island to St. Joseph MO.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 the one thing I'm still somewhat successfully holding onto at work during a series of major transitions.....may require me to travel on August 21 of this year......which even if I can stay for the eclipse, might suck, as more than 1MM people from out of state are descending on OR that day....

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Part of the reason I decided against traveling for it; going to be nuts. The cities are basically warning people that emergency vehicles won't be able to get around that day in parts of OR, due to all the traffic...
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Every time I see this thread that Bonnie Tyler song pops into my head ...
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Every time I see this thread that Bonnie Tyler song pops into my head ... thanks, thanks a lot.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Author Posted July 19, 2017 Every time I see this thread that Bonnie Tyler song pops into my head ...Whatever you do, don't stare directly at it. At least not without special thread-proof glasses. Otherwise you'll be hearing Manfred Mann, instead.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 What would really happen if I looked at it for 5-10 seconds w/o special glasses?
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Author Posted July 19, 2017 What would really happen if I looked at it for 5-10 seconds w/o special glasses? The thread? You might develop a strange desire to learn all about General Relativity and Dark Energy. Which can get pretty expensive and time-consuming, lemme tell ya.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Oh, that. turtle.jpg I become a green skinned ninja that gets to date a hot actress?
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Author Posted July 19, 2017 I become a green skinned ninja that gets to date a hot actress?Just don't burn the potatoes.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 confirmed, will be in MN, not Oregon, for the eclipse. I'm sure this work meeting will be awesome!
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Saw a little sliver covered up so far in Texas! In another hour or so it should be 60% covered.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2017 Author Posted August 21, 2017 About 10 minutes away in Oregon, now. https://www.nasa.gov/eclipse2017
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 It's cloudy in Chicago. And I don't have any protective eye ware. So, even if the clouds did allow us to see something, I wouldn't be able to look anyway. Can you look for a second without damage?

Watching the live NASA broadcast is pretty amazing, too. They're going to get a stream from the ISS, too.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 it's about ~25% covered now. Pretty cool!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 cloudy in MN.....where I was forced to fly for work....
