Sam Morley Verified Member Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Hughes got crushed tonight. Rockies could have double digit run total easily. His lack of velocity is hurting. Rockies hitters were hitting low outside fastballs deep in the count for base hits. Those pitches should be fouled off at best, but with the high 80s fastball they have enough time to poke it in play.
rghrbek Verified Member Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I am trying to catch up on here...did I see that Buxton sacrificed, in the 2nd with a man on 2nd and nobody out? No chance of a force out, but we sacrifice in the 2nd? Same guy who his next at bat hits a bomb? Also threw Hughes back out in the 6th, when his numbers against teams seeing him for the 3rd time are awful (well there are not a lot of those numbers as he rarely gets outs). Also, Grossman has one bobble for an extra base (possible), and later kicked a ball for an error/run? I guess a positive is both Buck and Castro got a hit in the same game. jimmer Verified Member Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 (edited) I know getting into math is verboten in these parts, but the biggest reason IMO hughes hasn't been a disaster is that, in his 8 starts, he left with his team ahead by 1 or 2 runs FIVE times. All this while only pitching more than 6 innings once. The bullpen has been his biggest savior this year. HAD been, anyway.Edit: he pitched into the7th against bostonIt's helps that, going into today, he has gotten almost 5 runs a game of support (4.88 to be exact, which is slightly less than he's given up a game). Only 14 qualifying starters in baseball have gotten more. He's been horrible, regardless of how well the team around him has played in order to keep themselves in the game. Sam Morley Verified Member Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I didn't like the buxton bunt in the second either, esp not to the right side. I guess he always has the chance to get a hit out it though. A buxton bunt is never truly a sacrifice. The polanco bunt attempt in the 7th was far worse. Riverbrian and Oldgoat_MN 2

TwinsCD Verified Member Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Analytics weren't that prevalent in 1995 when Hawkins came up. So how the heck did they come up with that pie graph illustrating his percentages over 10,000 career pitches? Who got stuck with that job?

But horrible, no. Not at least what has qualified as horrible around here the better part of the last six years

The polanco bunt attempt in the 7th was far worse.I'd rather have Polonco swinging as well, but c'mon Molly, you have a duck on the pond you let your young player drive him in...in no scenario should buxton be bunting in that situation, especially in the 2nd inning. Molly will probably say it was his choice. Well then Paul I hope you told him that was not the right spot, and take a crack at driving him in Mike Sixel 1

Blake Verified Member Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Phil just does NOT have a pitch that can get a swing and miss.Sure he does...as long as the major league ball players he faces have as much experience with a fastball as I do....
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Try the White Clam Pizza. I didn't get a chance to. You'll have to be my proxy. I'm allergic to clams. But I did have some New Haven pizza so next time we get into a Nee York vs Chicago pizza discussion I'm going with Nee Haven pizza.

twinssporto Verified Member Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I run around all evening doing errands listening to the Twins on the radio. I get home and the score is 4 to 3 Twins. End up doing some chores, fix the washing machine, let the dog out all the while thinking it will be nice to sit down finally and watch the game and banter with my TD friends....Just turned on the tv and it's now 7-3 Rockies. Listen, if you guys can't do a better job of keeping the score close while I'm not watching we're gonna have to have a little sit down conversation about perseverance, jinxes, etc. And please don't blame the bullpen...
