Jake Reed:

He didn't win the over/under wins contest last year to win free Harry's Razors....

Position: WR for the Minnesota Vikings AWESOME RP prospect we've heard about for 3 years

B/T: R/R
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 190 lbs

Birthday: September 29, 1992 AGE: 24
Drafted in the 5th round back in 2014 from Oregon

Starting the year in AAA working late, high leverage innings.

Does it feel hot in here? Or maybe I'm just feeling the HEAT from Jake Reed's fastball... Since I've been on this website, Reed has been a name thrown out there as a near-ready reinforcement for the big league club. Maybe the 2nd year is the charm for this former college starter. Reed unleashes a mid-90's fastball with movement, along with a slider that the New York Times states is "Devastating". Here's a video of him uncorking a few pitches...

Reed spent the majority of his 2016 in AA, before getting the call to Rochester on August 14th. Overall he pitched 70 innings last year with a 3.57 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 9.2 K/9. He'll start the year on the 7 day DL then come back to put the HEAT on Michael Tonkin for a bullpen spot in Minnesota.

Unfortunately the month of April was radio silent for Reed. He was placed on the 7 day DL on April 6th with a right shoulder strain, and we haven't heard a peep about him since.

Hopefully he'll get back at it sooner than later.

Well this just snuck up on us... Jake Reed made his debut on June 2nd! In that appearance he didn't do that great. He pitched 1/3 of an inning, walking 3 batters, and striking out a batter. 20 pitches, 7 strikes. Somehow he got the win*

*Win stats are meaningless.

He also pitched yesterday 6-5 for Chattanooga. That appearance went much better than his debut!

2 IP - 1 hit - 0 R - 2 K - 32 pitches and 22 strikes

Reed has been pitching pretty consistently now for Chattanooga. On June 8th, he pitched both the 8th and 9th innings.

2 IP - 1 H - 1 K - 1 HBP - 23 pitches 17 strikes

Per Cody Christie's Minor League Report today:

"Jake Reed entered the ninth with a three-run lead and he needed every one of them. He walked two of the first four batters before a double cut the lead to 5-3. During the next at-bat, Reed uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the runner to scamper in from third. A line out to center ended the threat and the Lookouts came away with the big win."

1 IP - 1 H - 2 ER - 2 BB - 29 pitches 17 strikes

Seth Stohs pointed out in his article "Minor League Promotions Coming Soon?" that Jake Reed was promoted to Rochester on Monday 6/19!

After missing the first 6 weeks of the season, he had a short stint in AA and put up these stats:

5 appearances -- 7.1 IP -- 2.45 ERA -- 1.36 WHIP -- 8 K -- 6 BB -- .154 opponent's BA

Since the MLB bullpen is lacking talent and production, let's hope he does well in AAA to get a quick promotion.

Since getting the call up to Rochester, Reed has made 2 scoreless appearances.

6/20:

1.1 IP -- 1 H -- 2 K -- 0 BB -- 26 pitches 18 strikes

6/23:

2.0 IP -- 0 H -- 1 K -- 0 BB -- 22 pitches 15 strikes

Reed is finding his groove in Rochester! 2 more scoreless appearances.

6/26

1.1 IP - 2 H - 1 K - 0 BB - 1 save - 22 pitches 15 strikes

7/1

1.2 IP - 0 H - 1 K - 0 BB - 19 pitches 13 strikes

Reed last pitched on July 4th, where he got the save in a 5-3 win.

Per Steve Lein's Report:

"Jake Reed pitched the ninth inning and picked up his second save for Rochester. He did allow a solo home run for the final score of 5-3, but also struck out the last two hitters of the game. It was Reed’s first run allowed at AAA."

He now has a miniscule 1.43 ERA, 0.55 WHIP, and opponents are hitting .160 against him in 7 1/3 innings.

On July 4th, he threw 15 pitches, 12 were strikes.

Reed picked up another save on July 8th:

1.1 IP - 1 H - 0 R - 0 K

19 pitches - 11 strikes

His AAA stats through 7/10

6 appearances - 8.2 IP - 3 saves - 7 K - 0 BB - 1.04 ERA - 0.58 WHIP and opponents are batting .167 against him.

He's gotta be close to a promotion, doesn't he? He's by far the most talented healthy reliever down there and seems to have established some decent control finally. There aren't any roadblocks in the bullpen to speak of.

Let's hope so. It's very encouraging that he's pitching so well in AAA. He got a taste of AAA action last year. I can't imagine he has much else to prove other than maybe pitching in back to back games.

Haven't updated this in a bit, so I'm going to spit out a bunch of game log stats:

7/14 @ Lehigh Valley:

1 IP - 3 H - 1 ER - 1 BB - 24 pitches 16 strikes

7/17 vs. Charlotte:

1 IP - 0 H - 1 ER - 2 BB - 21 pitches 9 strikes

7/20 vs. Toledo:

1 IP - 0 H - 0 ER - 1 BB - 14 pitches 8 strikes

7/23 vs. Toledo:

1 IP - 1 H - 0 ER - 2 K - 0 BB - 21 pitches 12 strikes

Posted

In total, his stats in AAA so far are:

10 appearances - 12.2 IP - 2.13 ERA - 1.11 WHIP - 3 saves - 10 K - 5 BB - opponents hitting .209 against him

I really do wonder if he's next in line to get a promotion.

Not sure what the deal is but this year promotions seem to be even harder to come by than they used to be for some players putting up outstanding stats. If Reed keeps this up and is not on the MLB club by the end of the season, my head just might explode.

It's been an interesting ride for Jake Reed this season. After missing the first 6 weeks of the season, he returned to AAA and continued what he does best.

He finished 2017 with these stats:

27 appearances - 38 IP - 2-0 record - 2.13 ERA - 1.18 WHIP - 6 saves - 33 K - 17 BB - .211 BAA

The weird thing about him this year is he never pitched in back to back games. In fact, it appeared to be planned that he pitched once every 3-4 days. I don't know if he's going to be added to the 40 man this winter, or if he's in their future plans for the MLB bullpen.

Maybe he's just an Anthony Slama type with awesome AAA numbers and nothing else. Or maybe he needs a chance. This will be an interesting winter for him.

The guy certainly throws hard enough.  I'm really quite surprised he didn't get a call this season.
