Deadspin Interview with Craig Breslow

But I think you’re starting to see, with the creation of these baseball analytics departments, a recognition of that need to take the information that someone who maybe has never played baseball, is calculating, and hand it off to someone who kind of bridges that gap and gets it to players in a way that they want to use it.

Do you see yourself as someone who kind of bridges that gap?

I think I could be. I’ve had that conversation with Derek [Falvey] before, about kind of being ... obviously being a player gives you some credibility, being a guy with a scientific background and who understands what this means is a layer of credibility, and if I can talk to guys who initially kind of shun this information and present it in a way that makes a lot more sense, then great.

Interesting.

Great article. Deadspin has done some great long form and research in the past.

...

I haven't read all of it, and probably won't, but that doesn't mean you can't! ...

That is the laziest line in a thread header I have ever seen.

Love it.

Haha well, at least you know it's honest! I know others love reading that kind of stuff.... Not really my cup of tea.

Is it wrong that I half hope nature's timer has ticked on Breslow through no fault of his own so he can jump right into working with Berrios, Gonsalves and Romero?

He sounds like such a great find. For front office/coaching possibilities if not the actual bullpen.

Good luck Craig, glad to have you in a future capacity though. That was implied in his signing right, he'd do the Hunter/Hawkins/Cuddyer bit? We're not grooming him for future analytical dominance for Cleveland or anything right?

Typically I don't see detailed analytics articles on this website. And on this website, I mean Deadspin. Ironically it's about Craig Breslow using SCIENCE! to re-invent his throwing motion.

I haven't read all of it, and probably won't, but that doesn't mean you can't!

"How Craig Breslow Used Science To Engineer His Way Back Into Baseball"

thanks for sharing. Well done QA. I don't usually read deadspin, and if I do it sure ain't sports. Really happy you shared this. It's an interesting story for so many reasons. I hope Falvey and Breslow catch lighting in a bottle.

I'm not going to pretend that this signing will turn the team around, but I do like the implied conversation with Falvey. Falvey seems to value input from all directions, and a "whatever it takes" attitude. This seems a contrast to the vibe of dismissiveness from Ryan, and the eye-rolling from Gardy when players (including Breslow in particular) would try to think outside of the box.

Let's hope it pays long term dividends.
