Wieters/Castro Platoon?

Why don't we turn a huge weakness from last year into a strength this year? Signing Wieters after signing Castro might seem like it makes no sense at first, but think about the benefits. Castro and Wieters can split time and stay fresh. Wieters is a switch hitter, so can hit against all lefties. They are both average to plus defenders/pitch framers. They would help out the pitching staff immediately-especially the young guys (not that they need help, right?).

The questions are, will he only play for a contender? Will he want a full workload? What will he cost?

My guess is he will sign with the Angels, but I don't think he would ignore any offers, especially if it is on a 1 year deal to ease him back to 100% in a platoon-type situation. I'm guessing a 1 year deal would cost 8-10 million. BUT WHY PAY THAT WHEN WE JUST PAID CASTRO (too much?)??? I would easily pay him that much instead of paying a 4th OF or 5th 1B/DH.

Would be a weird, unconventional signing, but would be a great signing.

i think 1 year and 8-10 mil are both pretty optimistic.

2 years 18-22 mil for the small side of the platoon? Hmmm.... nope

Wieters was .231/.304/.346 vs LHPs last season; I'd take what the Twins have already over him.

OK. You have drawn me in.

Slash stats need about a full season of data to become meaningful. Over his career he is a much better hitter against left handed pitching. That he wasn't last year in 115 PAs doesn't have meaning.

I agree that the Twins should not sign Wieters. There must be a better way to support that statement. If what mattered was his ability to hit lefties over righties. His career number support that skill.

Appreciate the feedback from everyone. Valid points all the way around. I just don't have faith in Murphy or Garver (or anyone else in the system right now at the catcher position). We'll see what happens when they get some ABs under their belts.

I would only sign him to a one year deal, not two, and as jorgenswest mentioned, he has been a quality hitter over the course of his career. Him being 2 years removed from his injury is what intrigues me-maybe this is the first time he has been heath(ish) in a long time.
