Sickels: End of 2016 Top 100 Prospects

Seems about right. I think if Tyler Jay doesn't get injured, he's in the top 100 too, but given the injury, a "next 25" probably makes sense. I think Romero will be in the top 100 by mid-season next year.

How do the nationals have do many arms? It's crazy. Like they don't draft anything but pitchers.

Or don't develop anything but pitchers...outside of Harper, who was a generational talent, and Zimmerman/Rendon, who weren't in their system long enough to get ruined, to a lesser degree, the Nationals haven't exactly had a good record. Ramos came from the Twins, Trea Turner came from the Padres, and obviously guys like Werth, Revere, and Murphy came from elsewhere.

Yeah the cupboard is pretty bare now that so many have graduated.

That's why its important to get something for guys who won't be a significant part of the next contender, like Ervin and Dozier.

Nice ranking for Kiriloff, all things considered.

I'm doing a top 10 for every system that will come out in October/November, and I've seriously debated Kiriloff at #1 for the Twins. He's definitely the top position guy for me for the Twins, over Gordon, but those two could end up my only two position players in the top 10. Of course, based on pure tools and talent, Akil Badoo would be a top 10 guy as well, but he's still very raw.

Moncada is #1 despite a 31% K rate in AA this year. Not exactly a locked in guaranteed star.

Same with #3 Glasnow, who had a 5+ w/9 rate in AAA this year. Makes Alex Meyer look like Greg Maddux.

Holy cow, talk about reading numbers and not players....

Ben, you don't look at numbers or think they're predictive?

Not terribly surprised here. Sickles tends to rate pitchers lower in general.  For the longest time he wouldn't even do a top 150 with both and had separate lists for pitchers and hitters.  I think Jay could probably be a bit higher here, same with Romero, but that's quibbling.  Both of those guys could easily force it next season by simply continuing what they did this season...

And living in Indy, I'd simply note that I'd be ecstatic if Pirates decided to trade Glasnow...  He's a good pitcher. Yeah, that walk rate needs to come down, but the big difference between him and Meyer is that no one can hit him when they don't walk or K.

Baseball rankings are a beauty contest. A lot of subjective.

Are you doing this without reading numbers?

Kiriloff at #1 Twins prospect? Wow. Seems high for a 14th guy. He had a nice start and twins fans should be pleased with his performance but #1 seems high to me.

Absolutely I look at them, but there are also methods behind numbers. Moncada was being pushed into his power at AA, so he was making swing adjustments on the fly. In his second year of pro ball, making big swing adjustments, strikeouts are expected.

Where a guy is picked in the draft does not determine his value as a player, otherwise Mike Piazza would never have made the HOF.

Kiriloff is polished, plays excellent defense, and showed more at similar levels as Gordon. Jay struggled bad after his promotion, and it was some stuff catching up to him that upper minors guys were bound to find. Gonsalves is the other #1 candidate that I'm going to have the biggest argument against Kiriloff, especially after seeing him handle upper minors hitters so well.

Yeah, the Twins system if light on impact bats right now - Kiriloff being the lone exception.  He and Gordon would be locks for top 10s.  Maybe Blankenhorn sneaks in a few with the season he had.  Maybe Javier or Rortvedt (who is in mlbpipeline's top 10) but pitching seems to be the strength right now, although they seem to have mostly 3/4 types over actually #1 types.  (Which is common).

I could make an argument for 5 guys as the Twins #1 prospect. I'll be coming out with my postseason top 40 soon, and still doin't know what order I'll put the Top 5 in.

In my preliminary Top 10 list, I have 6 hitters and four pitchers in the top 10.

No love for Wander Javier? I'd argue that he and Diaz are ahead of Gordon/Kiriloff at this point

His list reminds me the ranking of the 2009 top 10 Twins' prospects by BA (link here.)

For some reason national list makers do no think is ok not to have 1st round draft picks ranked high in their lists and it is also ok to include International Free Agents within their first couple years of signing...

Doing a Top 100 across MLB is very difficult endeavor, on the other hand, but if someone is up for the task, they need to take their time.

Gordon will have a hard time cracking my Twins' top 5 this season...

He played most of the year at RF, and I didn't see a single E-town game but I would assume if his D was excellent he would be in CF.  Also I think his lack of walks shows his approach is pretty raw and he is up there swinging away and relying on his talent - not a sustainable approach.

I am not down on the kid at all, I just think #1 is a bit of a stretch.  I would think the 3rd or 4th position player Gordon, Javier, and maybe even Blankenhorn/Diaz over him.

I recall you telling us last season he wasn't even the best SS at Cedar Rapids. I don't feel your disclosure will cause any undue concern.
