Danny Santana

Starting even 1 game in place of Buxton is blocking someone who will be part of the future, and he seems to start at least 1 out of every 3 games

Unfortunately, it is higher. He has started 37 games, out of 92 (40%). He has appeared in a total of 53. He is on pace for 322 at bats.

This is way beyond giving your utility guy some reps so he stays "fresh", which in and of itself it a bizarre philosophy. So you are willingly throwing a downgrade out there 322 times, because you want to avoid having to use him in a pinch when he is not fresh.

I will file this one along side willingly sitting a basketball player with four fouls, becuase you are trying to avoid a situation where they foul out and can't play.

Santana makes plenty mistakes, a lot I think from seeming lack of confidence. But this wasn't one of them. Molitor wanted him to run on a 3-2, but Santana sure didn't want to get picked off first. So a medium lead is in order, not a straight up steal lead. If Molitor wanted a straight steal he should have done it earlier in the count. To repeat, DanSan can be a walking disaster, but this wasn't one of them. And he isn't blocking Polanco. At this time that honor goes to Dozier, with EE and Nunez as close runners up.

Maybe you are right. I didn't see the play only heard Molitor's comments. But I'm pretty sure I heard him say Santana was our guy, although he kind of said it in a hedging way.

Right!??? Since when does a utility guy get 40% of the starts? It's one thing if you are giving 4 prospects time in the outfield and a whole nother thing when the proclaimed utility guy is sharing time vs. Just spelling a guy from time to time

He also has had 2 x 15day DL stints, so technically he has started much more than 40% of the games he's been on the roster for

Three types of people - those who can count, and those who can't.

While I SORT OF understand giving him starts in CF if you feel like you need to give Buxton and Rosario time at AAA..... with both of them on roster, there is absolutely no reason to have him play CF.

Fun with numbers! Ish

I don't know if the movie depicted reality or not. But I loved that scene in Moneyball where the GM traded the first baseman who the coach loved. Our new GM should cut Danny for the same reason

A utility player that can play every position is really useful with limited bench spots due to large pitching staffs. For example at the start of the year with a backup catcher, Arcia, Nunez and Santana on the bench (Park at DH).

But he is still a utility player and he shouldn't be playing often since he isn't a great hitter or really good defensively at any spot. His role should be the last man in instead of starting half of the games.

He also has more value when you have Park at DH, Sano in RF and Arcia in LF which results in very little roster flexibility. He has less value with Grossman, Kepler, Buxton and Rosario playing the 3 OF spots since they can all play CF.

He definitely isn't blocking Polanco if he was used correctly (last man to be used).

If he could play any position well, or steal bases, or hit, he'd have value.  But he holds the goose egg.:-)

He is another player that the Twins were hoping to create more value around. Yet they throw him in the outfield, instead of making him an infielder, not that botching shortstop would increase his value.

They should actually pass him thru waivers (which will happen in August) and see what interest there is in the guy.

Rosario and Grossman (and even Kepler) can adequately handle centerfield if you need to sit Buxton. Eventually we need at bats for Walker and Palka, both who show more longterm promise.

As a utility infielder, that can play short and outfield, you don't need him.

Another pin the Molly doll. The total system failure was not just the GM, but the guy who does the lineup each game and calls the shots from the dugout (and somehow can't get Buxton to bunt, too).

He's a utility guy on a last place team. Not the problem, not part of the solution either.

I don't think he should start more than twice per week, though.

Santana was the worst player in baseball last year.

Despite Buxton's struggles this year, he's still posted a WAR 1.2 higher than Santana.

Santana should not play, like ever.

This pretty well sums it up.

He is blocking Polanco via his roster spot. Kepler and Rosario can both play CF if Buxton needs a day off. Really, if someone got dinged, could Mastroianni be any worse for a week than Santana?

Kid has talent, no doubt. But it's not manifesting in a positive, forward direction. Pass him through waivers. If he clears put him in AAA. I've always rooted for him. And he may yet find a role with another team. But we don't need him, and Polanco needs to be up.

Correct, worst player in baseball since the start of 2015.

As for Buxton, you don't even need to count WAR (and defense, which Buxton clearly blows Santana out of the water)... Despite Buxton's struggles to adjust, he has a higher OPS than Santana since the start of 2015.
