It makes no sense to me that that padding on OF walls stops about 4 inches or so above the ground.

 

Why not have it go all the way to the dirt? Leaving that gap at the bottom is just asking for dead balls, and even worse, an invite to an injury.

The umpire usually stops the game in that instance, no doubt because of having been in that situation himself before.

True Story -- My cousin's turned black as the result of a hernia. 

 

He noticed it in the shower and he was alone at home at the time. His mother-in-law lived across the street... so... he goes across the street and shows her.
