Pushed out by a future star

The past two seasons we have been waiting for the trade of Plouffe to allow Sano to take his rightful place on the field as a future super star. I hate to need to trade him, but he does need to make room for Sano. This reminds me of a couple other such scenarios in the Twins recent past and I wonder about other players in the prime of their careers who were decent but were pushed out by greatness. I also wonder what the rest of Plouffes career will be like.

When Morneau was called up we already had a first baseman that a lot of fans loved Mientkeiwiidkksks (I never could spell that name right but my daughter could rattle it off like she was spelling "cat") At games you will still find fans wearing his Jersey proudly but Morneau was the real deal and room had to be made for the prospect. Dougie baseball wasn't a great player and he did not light up things after leaving the Twins, but he was good enough to play first base for a World Series team and he even got to catch the last out on a throw to first to seal the deal. I'm also enjoying seeing his name as a minor league manager for our Twins.

AJ Pierzynski was a good catcher but we also had this prospect named Mauer. It didn't matter what you had done before, you coulda been a two time all star, you were going to move aside for Mauer. AJ was one of my favorites. A lightening rod for sure, but I think he makes it easier for some of his team mates knowing AJ is going to take that type of attention. He also put up decent numbers. Since being traded, AJ did nothing but continue to but up decent numbers behind the dish, agitate all his opponents, and prove himself as one of the most durable catchers of the past few decades.

I will continue to follow Plouffes career if and when he's traded or gone but the time to trade is as soon as Sano is off the DL or sooner. So who else can you think of that the Twins have had to move aside in our history to make room for a future star?

Wally Pipp would probably appreciate this post.

This is a cool topic, but I'm at a loss to actually add to it.

Matthew LeCroy for David Ortiz? Let's enjoy the retirement celebration this weekend.

Rather strong indictment of the Ryan regime (I include the Smith years, all the same people) that it is so hard to come up with any over what now is 13-14 years.

BaseballAlmanac.com lists Mike Lincoln and LaToy Hawkins as starters for the Minnesota Twins in 1999 and they are replaced by Mark Redmond In 2000, the same year one Johan Santana became a part of our favourite squad. In this case you could argue Hawkins was pushed out of the rotation or you could say he just belonged in the Bullpen, I lean towards the latter.

Johan was part of the 'pen then.

Meitkiewicz had three good years before tumbling and thus easier to trade him. Ended up losing the player in rule v draft.  Plouffe had 2 good years. I would expect the same kind of return if traded now. They might also get lucky like they did with Brian Buchanan and trade for a futur All Star.

As shown by the same web site which also showed the Twins only having 4 starters that year...
