Better Call Saul

Season 2 starts Monday night. Season one is on Netflix for anyone who hasn't seen it.

 

My wife and I planned on spending a couple of weeks rewatching season 1 mixed with our usual assortment of video entertainment, but we blew through it in four days. We both really liked it the first time, but absolutely loved it all the way through the second viewing.

 

I think it helped a lot to watch it without any expectation that we'd get Saul Goodman at some point. It's a great show, and I think it will be considered the best thing on TV over the next few years.

Completely agree. I was skeptical at first when I heard about the show, thinking it was too soon after the overwhelming success of Breaking Bad. I'm glad I was proven wrong, and it makes you appreciate Breaking Bad even more, learning more about the supporting cast. 

I hope this shows continues on for 4-5 seasons, and ends with Saul meeting Walter White for the first time.

Easily one of the best shows of last year.  FAR exceeded my expectations.

 

And the episode about Mike's background was the best single episode of TV I watched all of last year.

It doesn't lose anything watching it the 2nd time around.  I didn't love Breaking Bad like some people at least after the first season or 2, and thought there was no way this show would be anything but a goofy comedy that would last one season but it's the best show I've seen in a while and there are a lot of good shows these days.

Good find, I wouldn't have put that piece together. I wonder if Gus will be introduced this season, or if he's going to come into play in a future season?

I can't see Gus being a main player, because one would have to assume Mike starts working for Gus independent and absent of Saul's knowledge, and the show is still centered Saul/Jimmy. It's not a stretch to think that Gus reaches out to him somehow based on the pill dealers the Hummer guy is working with though.

Good find, I wouldn't have put that piece together. I wonder if Gus will be introduced this season, or if he's going to come into play in a future season?

I hope they wait another season or two to introduce Gus, I think it will distract from Mike and Saul quite a bit TBH, plenty of development of those two characters to go.

It's not a stretch to think that Gus reaches out to him somehow based on the pill dealers the Hummer guy is working with though.

I will say I'm glad Jimmy at one point in time did make it in a big time law firm before he ventured off to being Saul Goodman... I'm very excited to see the breaking point for him and why he became who we saw on Breaking Bad.

My interpretation of that scene is an example of Saul not letting anyone tell him what he can and can not do anymore.

 

I think back to his conversation at the ticket gate with Mike when he said "I know what held me back (from running off with the Kettleman's money) and I'm never going to let it happen again." And that scene stems off of that thought.

It was mentioned on "Talking Saul" that there would be a "couple" people from BB this season. I imagine that Gus is one of them.

Last night's episode was great! Pretty interesting to see how Mike and Saul's relationship is developing to the point where we saw them in Breaking Bad. Life could have been so much different for Saul if it could work with Kim. Unfortunately he's always going to have parts of his life he'll never be able to share with her...

Breaking Bad was awesome and it was tense nearly the whole time. Legal dramas don't really bring that same element, but as we saw in this last episode, dealing with dangerous drug dealers does, and Mike appears set to be doing a lot of that.

I think there's a good balance right now between Saul and Mike's stories. You're right that the more interesting story line is Mike right now, because we're seeing him dive deep into the world of working with drug dealers. It's going to be interesting to see when Saul officially "breaks" and transforms into the lawyer we know in BB.

This show is consistently good every week. I wouldn't say it's on Fargo's level of brilliance, but so far so good. Mike as always is a tough SOB, and his story line is only going to get more intriguing. I really hate that Chuck is right when it comes to Saul. Instead of helping him, he's sitting back and waiting for him to screw up. I wish he could admit his resentment towards Saul. Get off your high horse Chuck and help out your brother.

Chuck isn't right though (his attitude enables what Jimmy becomes).  People aren't this fixed, known quantity; they are dynamic.  I'm reminded of the proverb that Manning evoked yesterday during his press conference: Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he could be and he will become what he should be.  Chuck, for a person of such vulnerability, has no empathy, and no sense of responsibility for the welfare of others.

 

Did anyone catch what Mike said to Tuco as the cops pulled up and Tuco punched him one last time; it sounded like something in Spanish, but I couldn't make it out.  But the way Tuco smiled and than socked Mike made me think it had some significance.

Could be wrong but I thought I heard "That all you got?" Unless he said something prior to that line which I missed. 

That's a good point to make about Chuck. He's always treated Saul as "Slippin' Jimmy" and it's no wonder he became who he was in Breaking Bad... It's frustrating to see the sacrifices Saul makes to take care of him, and Chuck shows zero gratitude for what he does. Seems like he just expects those sorts of things from him.

I don't know about that. Jimmy and Chuck (and Kim, to an extent) are all round pegs trying to fit into a square hole. We know Jimmy puts on the Darth Vader mask and becomes Saul because he has more fun coloring outside the lines, so to speak. The only thing Chuck could teach Jimmy how to do is become enough of a square peg to fit into the Davis and Main world until he eventually breaks. Chuck was never going to save Jimmy. The question is will Jimmy save Chuck (more than likely with some kind of revelation that he kept Jimmy out of the big law firm game to keep him from becoming Chuck).

I don't recall them ever saying Tuco was in prison when he was introduced in Breaking Bad... That also could be a cliff hanger in this show, where he gets bailed out somehow by his family. 

I think Jimmy snapping on Chuck is coming soon. The tension in their relationship is rising with each episode. One of these times he's going to bring up the "disease". I don't believe it was ever explained fully why Chuck had it in the first place right? Unless I missed that in season 1.

They only thing they showed was that it clearly wasn't real.  Beyond that we don't know any particular cause.
